Help wanted RX7/R34/Supra

I have been in two minds whether to sell the zed or not. Days like yesterday (the Llangollen meet) show just how amazing a car it is, and I would be truly sad to see it go. BUT I am still uncomfortable about the lack of seats. My partner has the family car, so with the 5 month old it isn't an issue having the zed, but I miss taking the fun car to the beach etc to show it off!

So..

The first plan was R34 GTT, but I am struggling to get a decent one at a reasonable price, the yen is high so importing is difficult, and being generally expensive insurance etc is it worth it?

The other two options on my dream cars are the supra twin turbo, and rx7. Rhian doesn't like the look of the supra, so that is a working progress..

The RX7! This is probably the one I find the most beautiful. Amazing sound aswell. But I am put off by horror stories of them blowing up..

Now I only drive 10-ish miles a day, and not at a fast pace so heating it up would be tough. I also keep on top of oil changes etc. You can also get a veil side one at a nice price.

Has anyone owned one?

Are they more reliable than people make out? Obviously every car needs attention, the zed has been no exception! But I don't want it for 4 months and finding I need an engine rebuild.

Also not planning to track it

George

If you cant afford a GTT you wont be able to afford a good RX-7 imo and a bad RX will make you lose the will to live , as NWB said they are very much an enthusaist car needing a lot of fettlling

I went to look at one just before I bought the Z.

I did the same thing, joined the owners club, spent some time looking at the adverts and general issues.

Spotted a beautiful black one up for sale, spot on compression, not too much BHP but done conservatively so that it wouldn't have continual issues.

Very nice knowledgeable owner, warmed and cooled the car down exactly how it should have been, went like stink and just a true pleasure to be in.

I'll get one at some point, hopefully as sweet as that one but I didn't want another 90's jap interior to live with at the time.

I felt the Z was a bump up, and a little different from what I had before that (mk2 MR2).

Find a good one, and get a good break down cover, just in case

GTT > RX7, unless you're hung up on looks.

I agree 100% with Rich, if the GTT is looking pricey then don't even think about an RX7. You'll need a much higher budget just to enter at a decent level, and then you've got to keep it there...

What is the budget anyway?

Moved from 10 years of Rx7 ownership to a zed after having 5 in various guises.

You can get with seats or with rear bins (so they are called)

They are not as bad as the internet has you believe, i only ever had one self destruct on me, my last one did 20k miles from a rebuild at 450hp-500hp from day one (apart from running in) and is still going to this day, not bad for a £3k rebuild.

You have highlighted the biggest problem yourself, they do not make good dailies for short runs, they like to warmed up and driven and driven hard otherwise they coke and oil themselves up.

However, they are something else and unique with the rotary engine, 50/50 weight distribution and 1300kg give or take, but sadly i wouldnt recommend one in your situation, unless at least once a week you take the long way home and take it to the reline here and there. I would also say, its an advantage if you live near one of the few specialists. You will love it, i can promise you that, just make sure you have the time for one, they need some dedication.

£6-7k should buy you a good almost fresh rebuilt one, gtt's i have seen are closer to 10k

yes see thats the point, mixed stories, which is why your experience of owning them is much needed.

The money issue with the GTT isn't as bad as I have made out, I am still considering them, but looking into its competition, I joined the skyline owners forum and it seems a bit quiet..

I can take it for a drive to put it to redline every week thats not an issue for me really. I just want something I can take the daughter in when I fancy it.

Budget given to the chap looking in Japan for a GTT is 9K, but I could go to about 11-12k if it was the perfect car. Theres no point buying a dud because it was cheaper.

I have never driven either, my mate has a supra twin, and its a stunner but sorned at the moment so i cant get a ride in it. I really like the interior of the supra though!

Sorry, that was aimed at Bradders, i desperately wanted a Supra and had both na and rz twin, then had a drive in a Rx7, never wanted a Supra again :)

Buy one with a very recent rebuild from one of the well regarded specialists, absolutely fine to tinker but any issues go straight to said specialist, they are all reasonably priced and it should last you many years, i think Hayward Rotary offers 3 year unlimited mileage warranties in any state of tune providing he has mapped it and thats for any use, track/drag etc

Imho stay away from fduk forum, there is a core of members who unless you brown nose will be very condescending, stick to Mazdarotaryclub.

Bit of picture whoring: My first and most enjoyable, stick to twin turbo with breathing mods, you will see well over 300hp

Ok well my mates supra may possibly be up for sale, he can't bring himself to do it but I'm pushing! He's a mechanic come sprayer, and has really tidied it up. In a lovely metallic sky blue as well. But anyway..

Has anyone owned the r34 GTT, is it worth still concidering?

Every thing comes to an end and whilst the 350 may be slower, it started to tick more boxes, to me its like a civilised Rx7.

It is also worth mentioning, they are getting old, interiors will be probably be creaky and rattly, bushes worn etc So be prepared to fettle if you are looking for a rock solid car :)

I'm probably going to get asked to leave but, did you ever have an auto? I'm a big fan of autos but never had a sports car auto, apparently the supra twin turbo auto is amazing?

If I have to tell you again about bloody autos in a sports car...! :p
