fishfire
I've had my 350z for just over a week and noticed a few worrying things: First up is the gearbox, which under normal conditions is fine but when driven hard as a bit graunchy 4th to 5th and 5th to 6th. I've just changed out the gearbox oil, which I'd say has probably never been changed by the looks of it and had a fair amount of gold colour metal flakes in it. Put some moly slip in with the new gearbox oil, but it's made no difference. From the research I've done this seems to be a fairly common issue. What's my options with this? Second issue is going through the mot's I got with the car, it seems it failed its latest mother initially on centre suspension mount excessively corroded, which I think is this bit: Doesn't look like anythings been done to it so not sure how it passed it's retest :/ I'd like to replace this bit but no idea what it's called? Feeling a bit stupid for not checking closer before buying and more that a bit hacked off!!
Lexx
That's a W Brace - They ALL corrode. So don't feel done over. It's not expensive to sort out. Various aftermarket or good second hand ones available from traders on here. As for the gear box - the synchro's are pretty weak on these cars. I'll let someone with more up to date knowledge of options tell you about that.

GMballistic
As Lexx said the W-brace isn't really a big issue. This after market W-brace from Ultra Racing is probably the best option imo as it is cheaper than a new OEM version and looks better whilst still doing the same job (stiffening up the chassis): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ULTRA-RACING-4-Point-Rear-Lower-Bar-Brace-for-Nissan-FAIRLADY-Z33-350z-RL4-1259-/281862953916?hash=item41a0575bbc:g:7sAAAOSw7FRWUKLW Plenty of threads about it: http://www.350z-uk.com/topic/84388-replacement-w-brace-options/ http://www.350z-uk.com/topic/88959-wm-brace-information/ http://www.350z-uk.com/topic/101885-rusty-underneath-help/ http://www.350z-uk.com/topic/102530-which-aftermarket-under-chassis-brace-to-buy-gt-spec-or-ultra-racing/ The gearbox issue though I'm not sure ~ depends how serious it is. Could some slower more sympathetic gear changes get around the problem or does it do it however you drive it? Could need a rebuild or maybe could do with swapping out for a good used condition unit although both options aren't cheap.
fishfire
Ah cool, so the brace isn't a big issue! The gearbox is fine when driving like Miss Daisy, but when driven hard, with fast changes there's a definite crunch between 4th - 5th and 5th - 6th, which is more of an annoyance than anything. I'm not sure how strong these boxes are and whether or not it'll go on forever like this or if I need to start the stopwatch on impending gearbox destruction?! -Bradders-
Gearbox sounds like my issue. Mine was the baulk rings for reverse gear and 5th/6th the shavings I had were worn down rings. Spensove from Nissan cheaper from the states.
