Urgent - Real carbon fibre damage - expert advice needed

Right boys.

3 grand wingmirror on a Mclaren. Owners dinged it.

I've said I can't really do nish but he's adamant he wants me to do something otherwise it's a 3k mirror. Cars being sold.

I've told him I can't see us repairing the actual cf but potentially can flat off the lacquer, mask slightly around the damage, blow some lacquer inwith an airbrush in feather off the masking edge with some 1500.

Any thoughts? My concern is this will look a bollocks.

What's £3k when you're selling McLarens anyway?

Personally, I'd rather spend my time trying to persuade McLaren to rethink their pricing than trying to do anything with that! :p

When it's on sale or return and it ain't your car I think it's a bum twitching amount!

I'm fairly sure the cf is damaged to be honest.

He just wants the eye taking off it.

Bottom line I've got a no blame situation. He's in the effluvial so he's determined that I WILL do something to it to take the eye off it.

How the hell I'm going to do it is a other question!

I agree with all the advice though. It basically needs leaving but he's having none of it.

Personally I'll have a go as you've got nothing to loose and everything to gain.

-The owner wants it done

-He is paying for the job

-He is aware it may go cockeyed

-If it comes off you are a hero.

I like that sort of thing. Just make sure you get something in print.

A light layer of paint over it, hides the damage but light enough to still see the weave through it like the F40. If I've understood modding correctly you can then claim they're Ferrari wing mirrors too.

(I'm not helping am I? :teeth: )

P.s. I was being flippant about the £3k btw. :p

I'm curious as to why you have to attempt this repair, mate...!

Basically I do loads of work for him with detailing and leather repair. He thinks I'm some sort of Necromancer now because I've pulled him out of the mither on some cars.

Added complication is that he can't drive the car as traders road risk doesn't cover it (think it's 165k this thing) and because I'm mobile for things like this I'm his only option (got a mini compressor etc and I only work/live down the road).

Only other thing I can think of is that we take the mirror off and he takes it to his paint shop in Manchester. Problem is I think he'll be met with much the same response so it'll just be a waste of time.

I've had some very useful advice from one of the lads over PM so i'll report back with the outcome!

You are right though. .....Ultimately 3k on a 165k car is equivalent to 100 quid on a wingmirror for a normal wagon.

I've seen guys at RTP fixing a similar crack on a BMW M3 carbon roof, came out like when it left the factory. It can be done if the carbon weave is not cracked, if it's just the lacquer. Sanded down and relacquered I suppose.

I'd give it a try if you have the right tools or take it to a body specialist if you don't.

Good luck!
