It does make me wonder how much these little things end up contributing to fooking up stuff.
GeorgeW
god I do all of those, 4th tip is my specialty! but in my defence I only do it to check out that odd rattle from the car somewhere...probably caused by actually doing it in the first place! MrsNiki
And this is why I drive an auto now!! I got really lazy driving a manual, and pretty much did all of that religiously!

brillomaster
anyone care to inform me of the 5 things you should never do so I can comment in this thread, but so I don't have to waste 8 minutes of my life watching a patronising video? Sargara
anyone care to inform me of the 5 things you should never do so I can comment in this thread, but so I don't have to waste 8 minutes of my life watching a patronising video? Well the main things to take from the vid are: 1) Dont be American 2) Dont have the steering wheel on the wrong side In regards to the gearbox stuff: 1) Dont leave your hand on the gearstick like an armrest 2) Dont leave your clutch in when stationary 3) Dont try and accelerate away in too high of a gear 4) Dont hold the car with the biting point 5) .... I cant remember the 5th now as I skipped through portions of the vid.
brillomaster
fair enough, don't do any of those when I drive a manual. however, my auto box seems to be a fan of trying to accelerate from 1000rpm, which just doesn't work

Jimmyflo
The only one I do is leaving it in 1st with the clutch in at lights. Need to stop doing it as much
Stutopia
Thanks Chet, I'll never leave it in gear at the lights with my foot on the clutch again. I'll just pop it in neutral and leave my foot on the brake pedal. Oh, heck, look at those neat outlines of two brake pads on my front discs If only they made a special brake for holding you at a stand still. We're just stuck with this useless e-brake, you know, for emergencies. Like when.. You're on the freeway. You're doing 65. It's raining. Your name is Chet. You're eating jerky. Some butthead up front changes lane without looking. OMFG you're going to collide. Do something quickly. Do something decisive. THIS IS AN EMERGENCY. Stay cool Chet. THINK. What in my car has EMERGENCY in the name? Emergency ashtray? No. Emergency sun visor? No. Emergency underpants? YES! But they're in the trunk, no time for that. Emergency errr... brake! Yeah, that's it, the e-brake. E is for EMERGENCY. Pull the e-brake. EMERGENCY OVER
