Lancer evolution, R33 GTR, S15......

Well after another great year owning the Z I've started to catch myself lusting after other cars again. All my big bills for the year have been paid and I'm considering putting the Z up for sale (again) (sorry GM ).

If I sell the Z and the ep3 I should have somewhere in the region of £9,000 to spend, obviously I could always wait and save a little more if needed for the right car. It's going to be a bit of a hassle as me and my Mrs both drive our cars daily so if I end up getting something mental we will both need runabouts before I can buy anything.

I've been looking at S15 silvias, evo's and at the top of my budget R33 gtr's. The idea is to have one more proper mad motor before saving for a house in the next few years. The mrs is getting her boobs done and I've helped with that so now that's out the way it's her turn to help me buy something I've always wanted .

The other half is really into Evo's and at this stage that's got me swaying towards one of them, I've personally always fancied the R33 GTR as my next car. I've drove all three of the car's in the list. The stock Silvia felt kinda slow but was still a great drive, nicer interior than the S14 and lots of tuning potential. The evo I drove was a 6 and running about 370BHP, what a machine, it absolutely flew, the noise, the drama and the shear pace of the thing had me grinning from ear to ear, totally different experience to the Z. Likewise I've drove my mates R33 GTR and that was running 400BHP, again it was rapid but you could feel the extra weight and it wasn't as nice in the corners. Still, it made a beautiful noise and felt more special than the evo, I also preferred the low slung driving position.

I know a few people on here have experience with the GTR's but does anyone have any experience with evo's? I've joined the MLR and read through the buyers guides etc. I'm not naive, I realize it's not going to be cheap to run a 350 + BHP evo/skyline. I'm not worried about that, my main concern is reliability and worry's about major engine problems etc, we've all heard the horror story's about evo's and skylines etc.

Here's a few of cars that have caught my attention recently, let me know what you think

Yellow evo 5 - fresh import.

White evo 4 - fresh import

White evo 6 (millage is a little off putting for me) Comes from a good importer tho

R 33 GTR - Fair bit out of my price range but I could find the money if my heart was set on it.

I keep looking at the Z and feeling bad about letting it go, it's never missed a beat and I'm worried I'll end up regretting it, on the other hand I'm absolutely desperate for a car with boost and have never owned one and know I'll not get the chance once real bills and home ownership comes along. It's a bit of a now or never kind of situation.

Anyway, let's say you have £10,000 to spend, has to be turbo, has to be 300 + BHP and has to be jap, what would you go for?

Anyway, moving on ....... my brother had an Evo8 running about 350hp and it was pretty awesome, lots of fun to drive and very responsive, Id have bought it off him myself if it wasnt for 3K miles service intervals, it wasnt great on fuel either but what is? The day I encountered a Lamborghini on the way to work in it was a memorable one, the Evo leaves people in no doubt as to your attitude to speed ......... ;)

I wouldnt go earlier than a 5 TBH, the higher the number the better the car in my experience.

R33 Ive always seen as a bit of a poor relative to the other Skylines and its been reflected in the money, it wasnt long ago GTS-T's were tickling £2K which is a hell of a lot of car for the money. IMO they do feel a bit boatlike, but difficult to beat for big cheap power. GTR's are a bit different but are already creeping up and I think you might struggle to find one within budget.

If I had £10K and it had to be Jap Id struggle to look past an FD RX7 or an S15 - both easily capable of 400hp, both great handling, great looking cars and both should hold their money as they are import only, the FD particularly will become a classic in a few years.

Tuning and reliability are two words that dont go together i am afraid, especially when talking older stuff.

I know Evo's are not bomb proof but that is the area i would looking out of your list.

Doc makes a good point, Rx7 with a rebuild is easily in budget, if you can get a Hayward Rotary rebuild they are guaranteed for 2 years no matter what you do tuning wise and driving wise, so long as he maps them. I would stick to twin turbo, breathing and fuelling mods and you will see 350+ in a car that weighs 1300kg :) Rx7's were released in the UK though Doc :)

RX7 is off the cards as the Mrs doesn't approve unfortunately, she will be helping financially so it's only fair to let her have a say

S15 is a possible but I've been on the look out for a nice one for months and not found anything.

There's a few 2jz converted silvias on pistonheads at the minute which would be insane but the garage selling them has a really bad rep.

Apart from the one my bro blew within 2 hours of buying the car :o

We think it was running 95 RON and detted itself to death, fortunately a dealer sale so they took it back.

Anyway, if you want a JZ Silvia do not look past this one: http://www.driftworks.com/forum/drift-cars-sale-private-sales/228151-1jz-s14.html

The guy is one of my best mates and I know there has been no time or expense spared, it is an absolute animal. Hes saying £7500 atm, I could get it for less ...........

Evo 4 and 5's aren't the best neither are later 6's, no power level is safe with them really rods have broken on stock cars but many do run 350hp reliably, a 350hp Evo 5 or 6 is a very rapid tool indeed , would see off most things

Save and buy a 33 GTR i reckon

Christ that thing look's like an animal!! Probably a bit ott for what I'm looking for and I want something with nice clean bodywork etc. Still, cracking motor, look's mental.

If I go down the evo route I'd probably buy a fresh import from a dealer on the hope that I'd be covered if the worst did happen, sorry to hear about your mates evo. Storys like that are what keep putting me off.

Are the impreza lumps any more reliable? Quite like the old 2 door type r's and the newer type uk (04 plate).

Perhaps also worth a comment, whilst the zed isnt luxurious inside, its quite a nice to be, going older may seem like a backwards step, I have done it a couple of times and its made those choices seem positively old in comparison. We can all offer opinions but as with most similar threads, start having a look at a few and get some decent test drives, make sure you not only get a chance to put them through their paces but also go get into some traffic and some normal day to day town driving.

I looked long and hard at going for an Evo, I personally would not have gone below a 6 if I am using it regularly and wanted it above stock boost. Or save up a bit more and get yourself a Tommi Makinnen, it will only gain in value and is a rocket straight out the box.

I didnt quite bond with my R33 (albeit not a GTR), I liked it, it was proper good theatre, but something didnt quite get me to 100% happy on it. If you are set on an R33 I think for £9k you are getting a bottom of the range GTR or you could probably pick up a standard R34 GTT which would be a great base for a build over time, much better interior and body weight trimmed a tad.

Whilst we are on the subject, will put forwards my suggestion for a Celica Gen 6 GT4 ;) forged and tuned will see north of 350bhp no problem.

I guess it depends on what you like. Personally Evos dont do it for me. I like curvy sexy cars, like the 350z is. Same applies to the S15, a lovely looking car, but I feel the looks of the S14 arent quite there. The RX7 is as well, classis sexy lines. The Evo is completely different. big and square, but like I say, its personal preference. Its a shame your misses doesnt like the RX7 as they seem to be creeping up in price, so could be an investment if you have it long enough. The R33 is ok, but everytime I see one, I always think 'I take it you couldnt afford the R34'

Dont suppose you like the S2000?

Sold the R33, bought the GT4...much happier in that now. Its so much more nimble (rally car I guess!) and responsive but still has that out and out speed in a straight line.

An R34 GTT in my own opinion if you are on a budget of £9k would get you a better all round car than a £9k R33 GTR. Its rear wheel drive (the R33 GTR will operate in rear wheel drive in most driving conditions anyway), single turbo with the revised Neo engine.

If that's the case isn't that true of any car? If you can't afford a 370z you get a 350z...

Yes I guess, thats why I have the 350z

But its more so with skylines because how popular the R34 is

The R34 GTR is ridiculously overpriced, the prices of R32 and R33 GTRs are about right, the R34 is pricing half driven by the F&F brigade I suspect. Especially given the price of the R34 GTT, it just doesn't make sense. There are plenty of R34 GTTs with a bit of fettling that would easily match a stock R34 GTR, they are really an overlooked car and subsequently undervalued.

yes I guess your right, but thats why I said it depends on what you want, because if its more looks, then that will out way the speed factor. I would happily have a R34 if they made it a 1.8 just because I love the looks. But at the end of the day, its personal preference.
