will McLaren be a serious threat to anyone?

Will Alonso jump ship at Melbourne?

Will Honda pull the plug?

Will the Arab backers back out now their oil income is is probably less than the dollars they use to fund the team?

I know something, if Hass walk all over McLaren this year I think we can say goodbye to anyone that matters in the team.

But then you look at the sales of McLaren cars

However, not so keen on Steve Jones being the main anchorman - never really liked him or any of the shows he's done... plus does he know anything about formula 1? Hopefully the wealth of talent around him will make up for it.

And of course Murray is back! legend. And Jordan is back! Not so good

To be fair, the purpose of the anchor is to be entertaining and engaging, rather than conveying specialist knowledge (which is the pundits' job). The same could be said of Murray Walker for that matter ;)

Well, I was thinking of staying up to watch first practice but it's hammering down with rain in Melbourne and this usually means no action on track. Weather forecast is better for Saturday and Sunday only a slight possibility of the odd shower.

Well I'd feel terribly short changed if I had paid for a quali ticket today. Horrific regime that results with more in garage action than on the track. Q3 just doesn't work and fans have no idea what's happening on the track.

As predicted terribly disappointing. These strategists are extremely intelligent, how could they not foresee such an obvious issue.

Should have stayed in bed

For the first time in years I didn't get up or even bother to record qualy. I predict the new system will be history very soon.

Agreed, waste of time, it just won't work in f1 without making it possible to finish a timed lap even if it has started and extending the window to 2 minutes but even then q3 will be just as bad, to finish 3 minutes before the flag is just ridiculous

If they're going to stick to this set up then q3 needs to be as it was last year a straight shootout to at least get some last minute action, I'm wondering if Ferrari deliberately didn't run again just to prove a point of how bad an idea this format really is

Another Ecclestone amd Todt fairy tale, Ecclestone has proved conclusively over the last 10 years or so that he couldn't run the proverbial in a brewery. Anyone could predict what would happen, they did and it did. Come on Bernie do the sport that we ALL used to love a favour and walk away. Can't wait to see him squirm his way out of this one with some glib one liners when asked pointed questions. Oh wait................ you're not allowed to do that cos "I'm Bernie"

Q1 and Q2 were okay, and in fairness it'd be better in Q3 if you had a yellow or some rain, but when it's like today it's just moronic.

It's not about equalising the grid, it's about punishing success and I hate the idea.

The fact that the teams didn't understand the rules any more than anyone else was both concerning and massively moronic.

Like I said before, I like the concept but the execution was poor at best. On the bright side, the rumours are that everyone is now pushing for something else (anything else in most cases!) for the next race already.

I reckon if Vettell had put the Mediums on his car, the same as Rosberg, he'd have been passed within just a couple of laps. Ferrari new this and were hedging their bets as they 'might' have had a chance on the Supersofts/Softs, especially if Mercedes were going to have to stop again.

I don't think he's arrogant, I think he knows exactly how good he is!

Giving it the big I am to shift his team mate out of the way, time and again? When he spins and nearly bins it a couple of laps later. That is arrogant/cocky and a little premature... but as i said, its brilliant to watch. We need lots more characters like that on the grid.

He was quicker though, he just didn't want to take his team mate out by slinging up the inside. He overtook the car his teammate was struggling to overtake before Sainz had even finished his move!

When he spun it was because of contact with his slower teammate. He soon caught Sainz again, proving again that he was quicker.

He's not exactly Rosberg when he's losing/Alonso when he had a faster car/Vettle in general now is he?!

I really enjoyed the race on Sunday. Was a little peeved at the qualy show having got myself up early to watch it but glad to see that this has been reverted for the next race. I am sure that over time it would have improved slightly, particularly in Q1 and Q2, I think Q3 in that format was beyond saving but much preferred the previous system anyway. As long as we don't have a season full of changing qualy rules like we did 10 years ago then I can be grateful.

Glad to see the drivers are making a bit of a stand too, I always find it strange that they often aren't even asked for their opinions on proposed changes, I can see the folly in allowing them to actually vote on changes but I think their thoughts should be at least considered.

Looking forward to the next race and hopefully a competitive title race, although I would add that I would be happy if the champion at the end is the same as the last couple of years. Also looking forward to silly season and prospective seat hopping with some good seats potentially up for grabs. I get a gut feeling that should Rosberg not be convincingly leading the title race come summer he may be searching for somewhere else to drive, and if that happens to not be Ferrari ( which I don't think it would be) I think this could well be his last title shot. Not sure who I would replace him with but I would bet my bottom dollar that Alonso is desperate for that seat and would do near anything to get it, not saying of course he will get it but I bet his management have already been in touch. Not sure who I fancy for taking Kimi's seat either ( really can't see him keeping that again without a dramatic turn around in recent form from him) would be nice to see Grosjean have another shot in a fast car as I was really impressed with him at the end of the competitive Lotus spell.
