cearnshaw85
Hi all, 2 weeks ago my car started feeling different. It then went on to produce clouds of smoke (white when cold and blue when warm). The car stinks of oil in the cab when stopped. I had to change spark 4 plug due to it starting to misfire and also changed to HFC. I'm thinking that it could be valve stem oil seals that have gone. Is this a common problem with 350z at 100k miles? Any other ideas?? I can't find any how to's on how to remove both heads or anything about valve stem seals going so I'm thinking maybe it's another issue. If it was a head gasket I'd see residue on the cap but that is clean and the oil I drained out is still good. Any help welcome. This is on a 2004 DE uk car

ZMANALEX
How much oil are you using per 1000 miles ? Please don't come back here and say that you have not checked it . Why did you drain some of the oil out ?
cearnshaw85
The back box wasn't fully connected therefore gas' we're coming out of the side
ZMANALEX
From the video you either have an oil ring or piston issue or you have to much oil in the sump.
cearnshaw85
It was using around 3/4 - 1 litre per 3000 miles but now estimated 1 litre per 500-1000 haven't driven it very far since it started. I drained some oil around a litre just to check for metal fragments/ milky then topped back up.
Tricky-Ricky
Have you done a compression or leak-down test? Edited December 20, 2015 by Tricky-Ricky
cearnshaw85
Had the car 3 years and not had an issue till now. See above for oil consumption
cearnshaw85
It went into the garage for a service not that long ago and all was well. Do you think a leak down test should be done on it??
cearnshaw85
Sorry didn't refresh had the same idea on leak down test. Any good places in near Preston to get this done
cearnshaw85
Just turned the car on the move it was had a bad backfire eml flashing so I guess another plug has gone but this might be due to the oil issue wetting the plug?? ZMANALEX
Check the emission control valve which is screwed into the cam cover. Failing that, then I am afraid major surgery may be required.
cearnshaw85
Thanks guys I thought that may be the case. Is it better (more cost effective) just to replace the top end over overhauling the current?
ZMANALEX
Check the valve in the cam cover. If you have wear causing the oil emissions and it is valve stem oil seals or rings or pistons. Then you have two options: Rebuild the engine or fit a known replacement pre owned engine.
cearnshaw85
Thanks for responses I think it's too big a job for me so booked into the garage.
Ebized
Trust they are a garage that knows 350's well as we have seen far too many bad feedbacks from members about garages basically miss-diagnosing. You would be best off using an independent that specialises in the ZEDs if possible - if you post up your location (or better still add it to your avatar), then I'm sure you will be pointed in the right direction.....if necessary
cearnshaw85
I'm in Preston Lancashire near the m6 j32 Thanks again if any one can point me in the right direction I'd be very thankful.
