Any electrical folks here? Need help with HOME LED strip lights

Hi all,

 

Anyone have any experience with the LED strip lights?

I need to run a total of 9 meters, cut into two sections of 4.5M.

 

They will run up along the stairs on both sides of the stairs. housed in this casing :

I will run all the wires from underneath the stairs, but would ideally like to fit a PIR motion sensor at the top and the bottom of the stairs, so they turn on when walking past, from the top or the bottom...

Will 8A be too much?

 

Anybody have a good idea on how to do this? will the standard transformer and the 2 core extension wire be enough to evenly power the LED strips?

 

 

I am assuming it will be a simple circuit with two switches, not at the top, and one at the bottom.

 

Anyone have experience or a general "know how"?

if the bottom light switch is pressure, will it "over ride" the top switch and turn the lights on?

And then when the top is pressure it will turn it off? or will they just counteract each other? and both have to be turned on for the lights to work?

Hey. You will need to remember you'll need to hide the 2 drivers somewhere for these led strips. Approximately 125mm x 40 x 40mm

 

Two way lighting can be a bit of a mind f**k if your not an electrican and adding in pir sensors just adds to the complication. All easily do able with the correct guidance though.

Hi as Paul said you'd be best to have 2 drivers one for each strip and I would recommend that you use mains voltage PIR's to switch the supply on to the drivers as you don't won't the drivers permanently on if like you've shown using the 12v PIR's switching the supply on to the strips after the drivers. As for 2 way switching if your only fitting PIR's all you need to do is wire the two PIR's in parallel. So either one will switch the lights on like a 1 way switch.

^^ but then only one switch will turn the lights off which is something that you don't want. You want to be able to turn it off from either switch.

 

Personally I wouldn't run switches if you are running PIR's, the only way I would install a switch is if I wanted an over-ride to keep them on all the time.

^^ exactly I wouldn't bother with a switch other than to over ride the PIR's. No 2 way switching needed then. As either PIR will switch the lights on and then automatically time off.

You will need 3 to 5 amp transformer for each run of LEDs, the only awkward bit will be hiding the transformers, and you will need to run an extra set of wires for the other PIR if your intending to have one at the top and bottom of the stairs, I see no problem with running a permanent live to the transformers, I run several like this using remote switches without problem, but be warned some of the cheap Chinese transformers don't last very well.
