350Z to Jag XJR ?

After two years with my 350Z, I think I want a change, I fancy something that will "waft"

 

Anyone gone in that direction and did you regret it ?

 

I am quite fond of the zed but I reckon life is a bit short to keep the same car for ages, I want to try all different types, never had a car that I couldnt part with, zed is near but there is always another out there if I change my mind.

I'm quite simialr in age, and I have a Jag XF as the "family" car along with my Zed.

 

the Jag is a 3.0 Diesel and i'm pretty impressed with its acceleration (only marginally slower to 60 than the Zed)

 

it does waft along quite nicely, munching motorway miles easily, but it does shift some when it needs to (also has the benfit of a "flappy paddle" manual mode if you fancy taking over from the auto box)

Its the XJR I am after, "X350" variant, from 2002 to about 2008, probably budget wise about a 2004/2005 and that has the benefit of being slightly lower VED, am paying £500 on my 350Z and can imagine that would be the only aspect cheaper about running a 400 bhp Supercharged Jag !

 

Not after a diesel, no point for the mileage I do, I can stomach the 350Zs thirst and I cant imagine the Jag is that much worse, plus can run it on Normal unleaded, if its costing too much I use another car, work from home or go on my bike, I reckon on 15 - 25 mpg for the Jag and about 18 to 28 for the 350Z.

 

I think the jags handle pretty well, a bit on the soft side but Jags have always been like that, used to watch banger racing and the old Jags always went round corners very well, proper independent suspension all round.

 

Fancy an auto for a change, love the 350Zs change (when warm) but I want to try an auto, driven loads, just never had one as a daily.

 

Am looking at about 8 to 10 grand, not sure what my zed is worth, gunmetal 2007 296 vert with 39k, full cobra exhaust, throttle controller but otherwise standard, 2 owners, not perfect cosmetically but well looked after with fsh, £7700 ? will put an ad up on here.

how about a 6 series? either 645 or 650, proper V8 under the bonnet. wont be as practical or as economical as a jag diesel, but high on the waftability stakes!

 

Yeah, quite like the 6 series but got the jag urge, plus it has a supercharger, need to sell the 350Z and then see what I have to spend.

I've had that urge for a while now, not helped that there was a black 05 XKR for sale around the corner a while back. My main issue was the potential for huge bills once they start getting a bit older. Would need deep pockets I reckon if you get a 10 year car had ended up being problematic.

Not XJR - but I went down the XK8 route. It's a very different kettle of fish to what I was used to but I am enjoying it. You just need to sit back, relax and waft along. What has surprised me a bit is that when you start to go quicker it's much more capable than you think it would be - i.e.. the steering weights up a lot and it corners much flatter than you expect it to. At low speeds the steering is a bit too light and a little vague - the compensation is the ride quality which is excellent. It's a tad old world but I managed to get a good colour, interior, wheel combination that does deal with some of that. You would have 100bhp more than me to play with as well ;) A good independent specialist is very helpful to have (I would even say a must have but I don't believe in the word must - I always want to rebel against it :)).

If it were my money, I'd be looking at a Merc instead, probably a CLK55 or similar. Far better drive, better engine, more grunt, won't make you look 75 when driving it ;)

 

Not known for their reliability, but certainly not going to be any worse than a Jag of that era for sure! My Mum runs a 3.2 X308 which is very wafty, and Rich from here had the equivalent engine in an XKR which was nice enough to waft around in but felt lacking in personality to me.

Am doing my homework and would only buy one that has had the usual issues like the valley pipes dealt with.

Love these but would scare the crap out of me with repair bills.

I've caught myself thinking along these lines on motorway journeys recently, interesting to see what pops up.

 

An '07 XKR wafted past me the other day approaching a roundabout and I must admit, they do look proper (in a good way). Like a big cat.

Got my name on a 13 plate XJR 5.0 litre V8 supercharged from one of my suppliers. Will have about 26000 miles on when I get it next May.

You wouldn't,believe how much value its lost over three years . To buy from the leasing company they only want £22 k !!!

I know the supplier personally and he has the car professionally valeted every week.

This has to be my final retirement car !

Strange, I have an XKR and it's still in the garage at the rear of the house, my latest addition 03 plate 350Z sits on the drive now and gets used most days. Even on a long run I prefer the Z even though the Jag does go well and grips when you giving it some large and I'm 57 years young. Too many choices now.

I have an S type R. Very rare car which means it doesn't attract unwanted attention. Very quick (much more so than a Z) but also very comfortable. It's other benefit is its size - nice and compact. I'm not bothered about people who think it's an old person's car. I wouldn't mix with anyone that thick.

 

I've toyed with the idea of an XJR but I suspect it would be too similar to drive as my STR to be worthwhile. They also look bigger. I think you should expect running costs to be much higher with the Jag unless you're very lucky. MPG will be similar but other costs will be higher. Beware the valley pipe on the supercharged engines. They always fail (typically at 60-80K) and are a labour intensive job to fix. Budget £750.

By a strange coincidence I have first refusal on a 2014 car next year. Unfortunately I don't think the numbers will work for me as the car will still have a lot of depreciating to do and I don't think I'll be happy to swallow it. Yours sounds like a better deal.

My mate used to leave his XKR with me for weeks at a time , its now joined him in Australia but I decided at the age of 47 that I'm still wayy to young for a Jag , it didnt handle , didnt feel that quick and I felt like a t*t driving it

 

However it does sound like a Spitfire when on full chat , he had different pulleys on it but its a barge really

Oh my, that is nice.

 

I assume it was supercharged based on the vents, and being a 2004 it would be 400 bhp, and it didnt feel that quick, compared to a 350 Z ?

 

I am not bothered about age, just fancy a wafty barge for a bit, its on the list, will advertise mine when I have enough posts.

 

Have seen a CLS 500 with the higher power 388 bhp engine for decent money, always had a thing for them, if I dont like it, will get something else when I have a bit more budget, maybe a 370Z
