Irn Bru
Any members got experience of these machines ?. I'm buying another couple of cars to add to the collection next year, the v6 3.5 Slk for the Mrs and a Evo vi for myself. I don't know anybody that has one and have only spoken to other petrol heads at car shows about them so only know what I have gleaned from the Web and short blethers with owners at shows. Has any members on here previously / currently own one that can give me proper first hand input on them. Going to buy an already modified one, preferably one around 400 or more bhp. Any input appreciated, thanks. Bri
Richf
I owned a VI for three years , bought it very mildly tuned about 340hp and modded and mapped it myself up to 400hp/400ft lbs Mine was mint and getting nice ones isnt as easy as it was . Rust is a big issue now , very poor protection from new has meant that serious corrosion especially around the rear end if pretty common They arent built like Nissans ie build quality but are super capable on the road, I've never driven anything as capable on a back road but they arent such fun on a motorway as cruising speed is about 4000rpm in 5th They can be fragile and maintenance is more frequent although most capable DIY'er can keep on top of most things and just get a specialist to check it over once a year They are a rally car on the road and that mustn't be forgotten I can recommend these guys for servicing and repairs and they often get really nice examples , although Evo's seem more common in Scotland and no doubt there are no shortages of specialists Lots of info on the MLR here http://www.lancerregister.com/faqindex.php
Commander
I used to have a IV with a VII engine and short ratio gearbox in it - ridiculously fast car around corners and in straight lines. They look pretty chavvy by today's standards though, interior looks dated, etc. If I didn't have the Mrs nagging me to get a respectable looking car, I'd have one again for sure... POWEEEER!!!

docwra
Awesome cars, my brother had an MR FQ 320 VIII and we tested plenty of VI, VII's as well, much enjoyable You need FSH from Ralliart dealer particularly for the anti yaw unit, and a service every 3K is a killer, Id have bought his from him and would be ripping about in it now otherwise. Get a good one, keep the miles off and youll make money too
Irn Bru
I'm buying another couple of cars to add to the collection next year, Bri Mmmmm, c'mon Bri tell us more í ½í¸„. I keep telling the other half I'm not selling a car again, just buying and collecting but she won't have it (neither will the auld bank account í ½í¸ž) Lol.... I'm a big fan of v6 / v8 cars, in fact pretty much all the v engines, and especially the Jag V12, a few years ago I bought what I thought at the time a bargain 4x4 Pathfinder for my business from a mate. Little did he or me know at the time it was a very rare (in this country anyway) 3.3 ltr V6 RA 50 model imported from Oz. I put it in for its mot and all it needed was the front shocks replaced. After a while I started doing a bit of digging on it and found it was a model sold in the far east and Australia, was never intended for the European market and as such only a few ever made it over, mine being one of them. It has never let me down and sails through the mot every year with just a brake pipe or bulb, that's all I've ever had to do to her. 1860000 miles on her and she is still sweet as a nut and brilliant in the snow. So that's how I got into cars really, I was a bike nut since 12 yr old and still have a bike. My Mrs wanted a newer car but it had to be big and 4 x 4 so we went looking and found a Jeep Commander 5.7ltr V8 and bought it straight away. Kind of then I got really into V engines and a year ago I decided to treat myself to a nice coupe (yes that mid life crisis thing), spent a while looking at Zeds, simply because they were v6 and the rest is history. My wife wouldn't let me sell the Pathfinder when we got the Jeep because it costs so little to run and never let's us down. So we won't get rid of any of our cars because we love them, but fancy trying other cars also, hence the thoughts on the evo, Mrs wants the merc Slk, but it has to be the v6 3.5 model, cause she's a poser lol. My Zed is body modified and I'm doing a few bits to the engine but I'll never through the £££££££ at her to turbo or charge her, but I like cars that are different and not common sights on the road, could never have a mondeo etc, but I want something that's stupidly fast aswell, and the evo, even tho not a v engined car floats my boat. I will eventually get a Jag XJS V12 as well but that's a couple of years away.

Yes full service history is a must, and preferably Ralliart. Cheers Edited October 16, 2015 by Irn Bru
mdunbar
I've had both an Evo and an Impreza in the past and I think you should look at the latter for everything other than a weekend/track car. The Evo is only marginally better than the Sti Impreza in stock form on the road, but is far more expensive to run, modify and maintain. They both have poor build quality and are, for some reason, universally hated by all other road users. Expect never to be let out of a junction ever again Imprezas can look good too: https://drive.google...cXREUG9LN3dmS0k That one was stage 1 tuned to 360bhp/390lb/ft My Evo was a stock VIII 340 - didn't have it long at all. Richf
LOL about being let out , I did notice people got out of my way on motorways a lot more than they do in the z ! AYC isnt the big deal it used to be , its easy to service yourself and I used to do mine once a year , engine oil and filter is every 6 months or 4500 miles , but takes 20 mins with a oil extractor Its important that the AYC light comes on with the ignition and then goes off , unscrupulous sellers remove the bulb as it stays on if there is a fault , you can get rebuilt pumps fitted fairly cheaply now but Evos cost much more to maintain than a zed
nissanman312
My pal has a 6 tommi mac Staying with him in the tight stuff is near impossible He throws a few g a year at maintenance tho and he's very hands on
Jetpilot
I had an evo 4 for a short short time so dont know much about running costs so cant help with that, but from experience, any 2 litre engine running 400hp is going to be fragile and costly to maintain imho.

nowhereboy
I've got cold feet buying an evo so many times! Nearly had an fq300 evo 8 last year but after reading countless threads and doing research I bottled it at the last minute. I'm just terrified of the lump blowing up as I'd not have the cash to replace it. The general forum on the MLR is always full of "my engine gave in" style threads. It's just to highly strung for my liking, fantastic car to drive tho.

Kaveney
Crank walk on some early ones I think . Alan
Rock_Steady
I think the 4G63 engine is stronger than most people think. Failure is due to poor maintenance and not enough cooling mods OR not supporting mods with other mods. My brother had an Evo Xii @ roughly 380hp for 5 years and it never had a serious failure i.e. bent con rods/ring land failure or HG problems. Had 1 turbo failure but I think that was it. 99% of the time it never missed a beat. Perhaps he was lucky? Richf
Rods can be an issue on some models like the TME and early 7's , as mentioned crank walk on the Evo
