Adrian@TORQEN
MESSY oil changes could soon be a thing of the past, if a new technology from lubricant specialist Castrol takes off. Called Nexcel, a car's new oil and filter are contained within a single box, known as a cell. A mechanic can simply unhook some pipework, lift out the cell and install a new one – in just 90 seconds. The demise of the 20-minute mess-making enterprise should make car servicing cheaper because of the time saved, and Castrol is also saying the Nexcel system helps modern engines to produce less carbon emissions. It has been tested in extreme hot and cold temperatures in cars ranging from the smallest to the largest and most powerful. The system even continues to work under high g-forces, having been tested under 1.8G of braking – the equivalent of stopping from more than 60mph in just 1.6 seconds. Paul Waterman, Castrol CEO, said: “We believe this is the biggest leap forward in oil change technology in the history of the combustion engine. “It’s the result of almost three years’ work but as soon as people see the benefits in emissions and servicing as well as the substantial environmental benefits, they will ask why it hasn’t been done before.†Any drawbacks? Well, at the moment the Aston Martin Vulcan is the only production car to be fitted with the system, and they cost about £1.8m each. Castrol plans to expand the Nexcel system into mainstream cars as soon as it can.

OllyB
Hmm, has it got a setting to make the emissions appear lower when on test?
