Grundy
Sounds like your AC belt is worn/coming apart. That would explain the tapping noise - The rubber flapping on something as it rotates round, it will rotate faster with revs - Thus tapping getting more erratic. Just look down the front of your engine between the Radiator and the engine, you will see the belt. (That's if this car is a DE) Look for any wear marks, it should be pretty obvious. Failing that, start the car up, and get someone to build up the revs slowly as you stand in front of the engine bay listening.
lance350
That's exactly what happened to me. I went for a spirited drive pulled up at the lights and could hear a awful tapping noise I though it was a new engine job. I pulled over and saw that the AC belt was coming apart as soon as I changed the belt problem solved. I have never been so relived, although taking the under tray off in the dark while it was raining was not fun at all
jaffers
Thanks for the feedback/suggestions guys. This is the sound its making even when warm. ive attached a video dunno if its uploaded?
jaffers
ok the video didnt attach. SO, ive had the fan belt and AC belt replaced and the engine does sound much quieter though that whistle is still there between 2-3k rpm. we got the car on the ramp and then tried accelerating in 3rd but mechanic said as the engine was not under load we would not be able to hear the sound and thats EXACTLY what happened. really annoying. Anyway guys ive had a look at the belts when i got home, the AC belt seems like its not sitting right. can anyone confirm if that's the case? It just looks like it sitting further away from the 'rim'. Thanks Edited November 11, 2015 by jaffers
Sam Mcgoo
You're correct, that is not fitted correctly. It appears in the picture (hard to see) that it's not on the right hand pulley fully. The grooves in the belt should each match up with the groove on the pulleys. It's too close to the engine and that can be see on the tensioner pulley quite clearly. You can see that it's already started to damage your new belt too. Might sound harsh, as mistakes can be made by anyone, but if thats the quality of 'Mechanic' you're going to I would think twice. That's an easy fix that you can do yourself though so no big drama. I would suggest once that is sorted that you go to a zed specialist, or even another forum member who knows these cars and take them for a ride to demonstrate the noise. You could be guessing for a long time otherwise! Edited November 11, 2015 by Sam Mcgoo
ZMANALEX
What Sam has said: ^^^^^ Your main serpentine belt is one rib out. Slacken off the tensioner and refit the belt in the proper position. Extremely poor quality of workmanship.
jaffers
thanks for the replies. zmanalex thanks for your help, I got a pair of 'gates' as you advised me. Sam you have sharp eye sight, lol. It was the right hand puley that was one groove out. The problem was he didn't tighten it enough and it moved. btw sam where can you see the damage? looks ok to me, I hardly did half a mile when I took this pic. J4CKO
Think you will be ok, I am a bit anal about it having seen my brother in law take a 2 year old BMW from pristine to a wreck with a knocking bottom end inside two years due to not checking the oil, mine has never really needed much more than a tiny drop on a couple of occasions, you get into a routine with them never really check the little Citroen we have as it has never, ever used any and a replacement engine is £250 off Ebay. docwra
Its surprising how good engines can handle lack of oil So can @*!# ones, the various Ford CVH's I owned must have created their own oil, I certainly never put any in
J4CKO
Have seen them run on no oil for minutes, the VW boys do it to old Beetle engines but I doubt a 350 engine would be as tolerant !
martybhoy
After reading all this... I think I'll check my oil first thing tomorrow lol
