Massingham
So, I've done a compression test today. Unfortunately I don't have access to leak down test equipment All 6 cylinders are within the 185-190 PSI range, no major variation Cylinders 2 and 4 (I believe... Closest two cylinders to the front of the car on the right head) both had oil covered spark plugs, 2 being somewhat worse than 4. Not sure where to go from here other than to go ahead and change the stem seals and take it from there.
ZMANALEX
A dry compression test will not give you any indication of wear relating to oil consumption or smoke emissions.
Massingham
I was told to do it to rule out any major cracks etc. What would the wet test consist of in this case? Thanks.
ZMANALEX
If you had a major crack, then I think that you would know about it. A wet compression test is simply a way of getting an indication if you have oil ring issues. Just drop equal amounts of oil down each bore and carry out a compression test and compare your dry and wet readings. It is not conclusive but will give you an indication. Massingham
So just complete another test but with oil in the cylinder? How much should I use and what grade? Thanks for the advice. I'm going to purchase a leak down tester too.
