Lexx
As part of an extension which has doubled the size of my house, I have widened the garage and added a workshop onto the back. Before I place my 300zx in her new home, I want to paint the floor. I plan to do quite a bit of work to my various cars in there so I need an easy clean and hard wearing surface. I'm looking for advice on what people here have used and what the recommend or don't recommend. The old part of the garage is a concrete floor and the new part is a cement screed. So whatever product used has to be good enough for both surfaces. Consulted Google already but it's full of @*!#. 350zroadsterGT
Did my double garage with 10L of trade floor paint from tool station (3 coats). www.toolstation.com/m/part.html?p=64607
Stutopia
Sorry this isn't qute what you asked, but my tech has this stuff (not exactly, but similar) all over the floor of the workshop. I assume it's a bit warmer than a concrete floor, keeps dust at bay, easy to clean, resists (or can be replaced in the event of) stains, and I bet it's quite easy to lay. http://www.screwfix.com/p/ecotile-upvc-interlocking-floor-tiles-2m-dark-grey-pack-of-8/85464?kpid=85464&cm_mmc=Google-_-Product%20Listing%20Ads-_-Sales%20Tracking-_-sales%20tracking%20url&kpid=85464&cm_mmc=Google-_-Shopping%20-%20Flooring-_-Shopping%20-%20Flooring&gclid=CJztgNyagccCFfQatAodm4wBqA

Keyser
Hat tip to Lexx as I hijack his thread No seriously - I did the Zed Shed floor (concrete) with Epoxy from here http://www.garagedoctors.net/ However it is very expensive I managed to get 2 tins from a guy for about £10 when collecting my garage door (found second hand on eBay) Had it not been for this I would not have used it due to cost however I have had it down since the shed was built at least 3 years ago it has had everything split on it by way of fluids not to mention paint and thinners and it has survived very, very well - most things clean off easily it seals the surface so no dust from the floor overall very impressed! I'm thinking of going for a cheaper un-branded version of epoxy on the Zed Shed mk2 as it is twice the size so cost is a big factor! I shall follow this thread with interest to see what others have experience of or recommend Edited July 29, 2015 by Keyser
veilside z
As done many times before I do recommend you thin the first coat well with white spirit so as this acts as a size/sealer for the following coats. Heavy traffic over floors painted neat out the tin usually starts to peel/pick and start to loosen within time with cleaning. This is a good tip to cover all concrete surfaces, just ensure all dust is gone. I usually hoover the surface before application. Make sure the paint is solvent based not water based. A roller and a tray is best with 1" brush for the edges. Most importantly to make sure each coat is dry before next. Hope this helps.
350zroadsterGT
Did it originally in 2006 just as the garage was built, the drive is gravel and the tyres bring it in and wear it out, but I only did the recoat this year in may. The stuff is cheap and easy to put down and dries quick. More expensive is an epoxy resin paint, builds up quicker and should last longer. Next time I am going for a light grey 3mm safety flooring www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Altro-Contrax-Safety-Flooring-Commercial-heavy-duty-anti-slip-vinyl-floor-SAVE-/350772485332?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item51abab5cd4 Edited July 29, 2015 by 350zroadsterGT
Sam Mcgoo
I'm also subscribing to this. I must do my (quite large) Garage floor but am worried about cost and how any paint type stuff would hold up to a trolley jack getting dragged around over it and used on fairly regular basis. GMballistic
Lexx I can't really recommend any products as I haven't had the chance yet to test ~ still in the process of sorting out our house move with the new house having a nice garage I will be sorting out. I was planning on using most likely "Ronseal Diamond Hard" garage floor paint. Keyser
Just for your info Sam, Ref the trolley jacks - the epoxy I used handles it well or has so far and we use them a lot!

ZMANALEX
Lots of good recommendations there guys. However, I am surprised that curing time has not been mentioned. Last year I laid a 6M x 6M concrete floor 150mm deep and had to wait 12 months before painting. Drying of Concrete - Laticrete
leonk
I used two pack epoxy about 8 years ago and it has been brilliant. It's had brake fluid, thinners, trolley jacks and a lot more. Probably due a refresh now. I think Its important that fresh screed or concrete has fully cured (and it's surprising how long this can take) before it is applied. I bought a big industrial roller. Make sure you are all set up as once it's mixed and you start applying it you can't stop.

Jonnymonno
I always lay carpet tiles from eBay in my garages (pre used) really cheap. Fire resistant nice to sit on and if you spill something or burn one either take it up and clean it or replace it Just finished mine last night And the job finished Just glued down the ones around the pit and front edge of the entrance Warmer too Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Lexx
Thanks for the advice so far. Never a big fan of the carpet tile look. Good dice ref curing time. The majority of the garage floor has been down for 15 years. It's just the new screed extended part which has only been down 4 weeks. I quite like the interlocking tiles you can get, but paranoid about fluid get in between the joins and sitting there. Chris - that doctor stuff is ruddy expensive!! rabbitstew
In my old house I used some specialist garage floor paint from b&q. Cost me an absolute fortune and it was rubbish. At the new house when I moved in I got a 20litre barrel of blue polyurethane floor paint from toolstation for 50quid. I didnt bother sealing the concrete floor - just gave it the once over with the dyson, then rolled on a couple of coats of the floor paint. This was in the middle of winter, so i had some heaters on in the garage to try and help it set. I ended up only using half the barrel to do the double garage. I was in a rush to get my stuff moved in, else I would have given it another coat or 2 just to use the stuff up. That was 5 years ago and the floor still looks good. Its well easy to clean, any spills just wipe off. Only places where the paint has chipped off is when ive dropped something heavy or hammered a bit of metal on it etc. Its had quite a bit of abuse from all the welding / grinding etc as ive been working on my cars / bikes. I did consider floor tiles but didnt think they would cope well with oil / brake fluid / diesel spills etc. Also I did consider ceramic floor tiles - but thought that the weight of things like jacking the car up or having a car sitting on axle stands might crack them. Plus ceramic tiles might be a bit too slippery.

ZEUS
Personally I would go for an epoxy floor covering or a tile of some type, all the floor paints I've used over the years (I'm a painter and decorator) always scratch and also lift off if you park on them with warm tyres. veeg33
Subscribed! Will be moving into my new home (hopefully in Jan 2016) and definitely going to do something to my garage. But since its a new build, I'm thinking of leaving it as it is to completely dry and settle down before I start painting. I'm thinking epoxy floor paint. Daryl
Did my garage in August. Used floor paint from some place in Basildon that came through someone at work a while back. Floor is concrete, and it took ages to dry properly. I also had somee industrial floor matting from work, that i thought twice about not fitting. But glad i did, as its so much better, the garage is warmer, and alot better for crawling around under the car etc. Id look at getting some if i were you, as you would be amazed at the difference it makes. Or maybe even some lino from somewhere, just something to make life abit easier.
