When the weather is this good you need to start digging into the Big Ticks bag and pull out something special to do. With that in mind I decided it was time to tackle Nan Bield Pass. It's supposed to be one of the best single rides in the Lakes, the only slight problem being that it's quite remote and you need to do at least one other pass to get to it.
In the end I did three!
Gatesgarth, Nan Bield, and Kentmare just for the laugh (you might as well as its the smallest and only a smallish diversion on the return loop).
The stats:
26 miles, 6 and a half hours (of which at least 2.5 was pushing/carrying), and five and a half thousand bloomin feet of ascent
I must say that it was absolutely superb! The decent from Nan Bield goes on for ever and it really is something special. Having said that the Gatesgarth and Kentmare decents are cracking too, so the whole ride is a big singletrack overdose.
Pics? of course!
Near Kentmare on the way out
Green Quarter descent into Sleddale, Gatesgarth climb in the distance
Thats only half of it!
Looking back down the top half
The top of Gatesgarth, and the itimidating descent
Haweswater
Onwards to Nan Bield
Small Water and the impeding carry
Top of Nan Bield, phew!
Five mins later, looking back
Nearing number three
It's a tiddler! Comparatively.
No pics from the rest of Garburn, I was too knackered!
Lovely little decent near the end though
