553bhp & 465 lb/ft 370Z Full Amuse with Greddy Twin Turbo
Darren-B replied to Adrian@TORQEN's topic in Member Build Projects
I can only voice what you have just said mate. What an unbelievable car, even on the lowest boost setting it's an absolute monster of a machine. A lot of work but all worth it after a couple of laps of the RT ring this evening -
A sad day Colin, but onwards & upwards. I can't wait to see what is next
-
So when you drive it on the road it will hop over the bumps, smell when you open the window, make a drone when you accelerate & scrap over speed bumps, sounds more like a track car than a road car
-
So you will end up with 2 ruined road cars

The emission control systems are only found on the US cars as far as I'm aware. Spark erosion looks cool, I think Buster should get one as he has a good reputation for snapping bolts -

So this evening has not been any fun, spent 2.5hours removing 2 snapped head bolts from the block. 1 wasn't to bad as there was about 8mm of thread above the top of the block so I found a suitable M10 x 1.5 nut, wound it on then welded it to the stud & wound it out. Next was the pita bolt which had snapped flush with the head. So started with drilling through the centre upto 5mm diameter all the way through, then 6mm 3/4 through, then 7mm 1/2 way & 8mm 1/4 way. This took bloody ages as the bolt is so hard, spent most of my time extracting snapped 2/3mm bits from the hole. Then got the stud remover in there & slowly wound it in. Hoping that the stud would miraculously crack & un-wind. With a combination of an impact gun, club hammer & breaker bar I successfully snapped the stud remover So that not working, drilled & tapped a 6mm bolt into the stud remover along with a weld in order to remove it then it was back to drilling the stud out & re-tapping. Success -

Yep, there was an air pump that blew air into the exhaust to dilute the emissions. That will be long gone. I was planning to change the complete exhaust system but have since been informed that without modifying the mechanical side of things I'll probably see a negative effect from it. So back to plan A, remove the emission control system & weld up the holes. Then heat wrap the headers. -
Are you a jigolo? Perhaps you can give the bishop some tips

Spindle, butterfly, screws, needles, jets, polish & port and make sure all lines up without interference of air flow to the manifolds. Check for worn spindles as this will make it very difficult to set up the idle. Also make sure all the throttle linkages are free moving (pretty obvious that one). You can also check the butterfly by holding the carb up to the light to see how much light shows around the butterfly ~ we used to knife edge the butterflies (leave the sealing edge's alone), grind off the screw ends (loctite the screws in), countersunk screw heads and reduced the profile of the spindle. Honestly though it is just for minimal gains but can help and can be interesting to do. Tried to find pictures of the type of thing I mean; Thanks for all the info there, I haven't inspected the carbs yet, just gave them a quick clean. But will certainly look into improving them now that I know -

Thanks for the heads up iBishop, as per my first post the plan was to buy & restore a classic. I think trying to make it a 350z is a little off my taste, I may aswell stick a r35 body kit on it if I was to go that way. Atleast if I keep the L28 lump I won't have to unload my wallet on Uprev tuning every time the wind changes & a light comes up on the dash -

No real plans, will probably polish the intake manifolds, plan to put a higher flowing exhaust including headers, probably won't touch the cams or anything internal. What can be modded on the SU's? I'm likely to get rid of the mechanical fuel pump & viscous fan for electric, that should make it a little more free revving. -

Quick update: Finally had a full day off work today so after a good lay in I ventured out to the garage to make a start on stripping the engine down. So before I started I thought it would be a good idea to get the worst of the oil/grease off, so mixed up some industrial strength de-greaser into an old spray gun & got to work So just as I was rinsing it off my mate called me & asked me to go look at a 350z with him Why would I say no? had a good look over the car, 07(57) 313 GT & took it for a quick spin then the deal was done, so another new member on his way & my lift to any meets over the winter So once I got back the engine had dried off nicey & it was back to work Oil filter/pressure sensor, fuel pump & coolant hoses removed: Intake/exhaust manifolds removed: Then cleaned: Coolant hard pipe was looking a little sorry for itself: & then it wasn't Then removed the rocker cover & cleaned Which left me here: Timing cover, water pump, oil pump removed Tensionor, & guides removed followed by the chain Upon removal I found that part of the chain guide was missing which would explain the debris I found in the sump some time ago, so thats a bit more to the shopping list Then it was onto the head removal, which didn't quite go as well as I had hoped the first two bolts I went to removed snapped on the first crack! After some friendly words the rest came out with not to much of a fight: Once the head was off I discovered why the first two bolts had sheered off, there has been a slight leak on the head gasket allowing water to corrode the head bolt onto the block. So removing the studs is going to be so much fun I thought it could be saved for another day. The pistons are pretty coked up with crap to, but the bores seem pretty good, no scoring. I think I have found the source of my smokey idle, no.5 intake valve is really oily so hopefully once re-lapped will be ok. Going to get it all cleaned up tomorrow hopefully along with stripping down the head. I'll then take the block & head to a machine shop for them to check everything for any runout & see if it needs re-honing/ head skimming rings or bearings. Finally I removed the sump in order to make a bit more mess Am hoping to get all the engine bits cleaned up tomorrow & those studs removed, but the F1 takes priority & also promised to help my mate move house -

Had a look on ebay, very good condition but I'm after some without the bars on (like the euro spec) Think I'll probably go for either a new set or repair mine & paint them. -

Got to the bottom of the crane issue, after all the buggering about with a thick head I realised yesterday that there was no oil in it so it was just pumping air once the ram had extended about 250mm, topped it up & now it fully extends 500mm Are your bumpers in good condition? dent & corrosion free? I may be interested -

Thanks for the positive comments guys. I have decided not to make my own engine stand as it will be more efficient to buy one. So whilst I wait for that to arrive I'm planning to get the remainder of the fuel out the car tonight & make some room in the garage for all the parts to live for a while I may have to put the tent up in the garden to house some of the parts less sensitive to moisture -

So I'm pretty behind on where I wanted to be, had to work yesterday & then had a date with a busty blonde last night so the car was put on hold until after lunch today. Whilst awaiting my hangover to wear off I decided to start removing the interior, so started with the carpets, to reveal the original white vinyl which is in a pretty poor state & I realised that there are some parts missing. I'll probably just scrap the white interior all together & go black as I can source all the parts in black fairly easily. I then got bored with the interior after removing the centre console so decided I may aswell make use of the afternoon. So got underneath & removed the exhaust with no snapped bolts All out in one piece Then onto removing the gearbox, drained the oil out, removed the prop shaft, unbolted & removed (didn't take pictures as I was covered in oil) Then proceeded to drain the engine oil & coolant Removed the Radiator, HT leads & labelled all connecting wires in the engine bay Then disconnected the fuel lines & removed the carbs Then got to work with my new toy At this point I was almost laughing to myself how easy the job was, until I got to here: Maximum height on the crane  I already had to jack the car up to clear the support arms under the wishbones where the car a very narrow track & the front radiator support is welded in rather than bolted so I couldn't remove that. It was already about 4ish so going out to buy a winch/hoist was out of the question. I needed more height. So a little modification to the crane was the answer: Which gave me plenty of height So rolled the car back & then she was naked I need to look a little closer @ the crane mod as now the lowest height still holds the engine around 200mm from the floor Need to make a proper stand for it in the week so that I can get it cleaned & stripped down All in all a fairly fun afternoon
