What engine to fit in my car with a damaged engine???
docwra replied to cearnshaw85's topic in 350Z Technical
When an entire 350Z can be had for not far north of £3500 that sounds an awful lot for just an engine. -

I do wonder if they listened to Akhbar and it really is a trap ......... there are so many similarities between Luke and Rey that it would be a proper shocker if rather than following the New Hope story it all went a bit mental in the next one, I cant see her turning darkside with chewy as her mate either. Whoever the main villain is hasnt shown themselves yet either, apart from the mindreading Ben is a bit ......... ahhh, I think we all forgot Chewy injured him before he fought with Fin and Rey, maybe thats why he turned in a pretty weak performance? I think there will be some major surprises in the next one, probably centred around people doing @*!# you dont expect them to, so baddies becoming goodies and vice versa, we shall see -
Zurawski have done some very interesting things with race style tube inlet manifolds with equal length runners, might be an interesting one to look into? There was also an article kicking about a week or two ago about taking the top off the plenum entirely - upside is much more power, downside is you need ITBs to harness it, this could be a good starting point. Search for the links in the "Do Nismo headers make a difference" thread

Dynamic turtle and Linus - you dont have to quote every post in a conversation every time guys, particularly when theres only two of you in it The Zed is a pretty capable car to start with but it needs braided brake lines, if youre running anything less than a DS2500 brake pad then Id get them changed too - I recommend Carbon Lorraine RC5+ myself, they are awesome. Get the brake fluid changed as well without question, nothing ruins a day more than tired brake fluid. The cars really benefit from stiffer suspension, if you cant stretch to coilovers then look into anti roll bars. If youre planning on doing days while the weather is still still crap road tyres wont cause you and problems, MPSS are the best thing this side of race wets for heavy rain, its only when it gets hot that the heavy old Zed starts to benefit from non melty tyres - NS2R are good, and very good in the wet but if youre biting the bullet the other well known track tyres such as aforementioned RSR have more ultimate grip in the dry. For the 950th time you dont need discs unless theres something wrong with yours, cheap helmets are fine for use in cars and if youre having to top up any fluids during the day itself you have problems. Ive got to be honest, ID really not worry about running certain tyre pressure until you have a bit more experience and are chasing lap times, and remember - you are the only person that will cause youreself to crash, dont push too hard and enjoy a lot more

Star Wars - The Force Awakens Discussion *SPOILERS*

Ekonas first post pretty much hits the spot for me, this is clearly set up for a three part story, Im just a bit worried its going to be 4,5,6 all over again - young Skywalker gets tutored by old Jedi master and takes on powerful dark force with help from mates etc. only to pull victory from jaws of defeat against all odds etc. A few holes, but no doubt they will be sorted in the next two and Harrison Ford (note: not Han Solo) was killed off because he was too old, I didnt even see him as the same character. He is 100% dead too, otherwise Leia wouldnt have felt it. Threepio is feeling a bit tired for me, but Ill never get how they manage to make non speaking droids both cute and funny in these things, impressive work. Bottom line for me is despite this obviously setting groundwork for the next two, and despite the holes its still got the ability to totally transport you off to another galaxy right up until the credits roll, not much else can say that. Yesterday was the first Star Wars film my missus had seen and she cant wait to watch the other 6 now, I think that says it all -
Matching the top and bottom half of the plenums and machining the lips off the inlet pipework would be a good start Id have thought ........

While I agree that an air intake is a WOT, I believe there are considerably gains to be had by looking at the manifolds ....... Zurawski Motorsport have made inlet manifolds that perform better than OE or aftermarket, and Ive seen exhaust manifolds, turbo elbows and all sorts that have been knocked up by hobbyists work better as well. Jez @ Horsham started off making generic plug in chips for 200SX's, and even with limited knowledge they were a shitload better than standard management, increasing performance and decreasing fuel consumption at the same time and as far as I know theres not been much time put into developing a better manifold for the VQ. OP, if your man is prepared to mess with the plenum then there are gains to be had: http://www.superstreetonline.com/how-to/engine/modp-1303-nissan-350z-vq35de-engine-build/

Its not a case of not running well, you wont actually notice any difference in the car or its performance. Just one day it might go boom.
-
If it just got into the engine then it may well be worth considering a buyback, Ive done it a few times and always made some money

Dude, I hate to be that guy but go away and do some homework, there are so many variables that its impossible to give a hard and fast answer. For a start offset and wheel width are linked so a 12J ET10 might well fit just as well as a 10J ET0, or an 8J ET -35, theres not just one width and offset to go for. To give you an idea, I ran 10 ET -14 front and 10 ET -18 rears on my car, Id done my homework and they should have fitted with rolled arches, maybe a bit of flare on the back. We then found the fronts wouldnt clear the brakes, so had to space them, which meant the rears needed spacing as well so all of my best plans were out of the window - I ended up with 75mm arch extensions and offsets that would make baby Jesus cry. Thats without considering camber, ride height, tyre width/profile/stretch, wheel design and arch adjustments which will all differ from front to back, thats 10 variables that all have an effect on each other so its literally impossible to give a straightforward answer. My advice, as someone else has said is to get onto www.rimtuck.com and see what has been done to make various rims fit. Thats a starting point, but there will be plenty mroe work to do after that if you want your car to look like .............
-
I wouldnt even call that aggressive fitment, never mind stanced, assuming you are still talking about 9.5/10.5

Errr ......... you have an 06 350Z so would the test above not be relevant? Or are you just looking to tell everyone that they are wrong and you are right? Thats nice if so but youre going to need a bit of evidence too. Actually, what about the air filter and decat? Can you admit that we are right that they wotn add power or is there something we havent considered? At the end of the day youve pitched up and asked what mods we would recommend for more power. Theres now three pages of people saying you can do this or that but youll only get lasting effect with a remap as well, no doubt we can do another 2 pages if you really want to. If you want advice then listen to what youre being told, if you want to tell us that we are wrong then prove it, but at present you just seem to want to waste peoples time - thats also cool but people will get pi**ed off pretty quickly.

Why is everyone being so polite? OP, the 350Z has been in the UK and getting modified for 12 years now, and this is the leading owners club - many of us also have links to NICO and other Nissan/Jap performance car clubs. We know from experience that decats dont add power and air filters lose power, the exhaust already breathes pretty freely and anything other than the standard airbox suffers heat sink and actually loses power. The plenum spacer is a slightly different story, Id swear that mine added power but this guy has actually tested it: http://my350z.com/forum/intake-exhaust/467516-unbiased-independent-dyno-test-vq35de-revup-plenum-spacer.html and found there isnt a difference. Regardless, the point is that air and fuel are metered very closely on the 350Z - if the plenum suddenly gains 10% more capacity that doesnt mean the car will start chucking in 10% more fuel, it will just restrict the intake air until its back within limits and keep fuelling as it was. If it was a turbo car (like the celica on page previous) then sure, decats will almost always mean an exhaust flows more freely and a bigger intercooler will lead to greater boost pressure for the same reason, but as soon as you hit the limit of fuelling (usually dictated by what the Air Flow Meter is happy with) you you get fuel cut - the Z is the same but the variance is much tighter and here isnt any fuel cut. If you get a remap or add aftermarket management you can redefine the amount of variance and this will allow you to chuck more fuel in to make the most of a freer breathing intake, but the standard ECU wont allow it - you might have improved it but the car isnt making the most of it.

Tunnel is much better for this, they tried to make me go upwards the other day and I just shook my head at them, low level it is then sir
-
IMO if youre worried about your front bumper more than the look then youve already lost the game. All coilovers will go low enough, on a 350 you need a minimum 19x10 wheel setup all round, archwork, camber arms and a bit of time to experiment with what works best. Its a car that will thank you for it though, they look awesome with proper ride height and wheels fitted to the mm

I didnt ever meet Martin but its clear from this thread how intrinsic to this club he was, but more importantly how he touched so many people, RIP.

Constructive. See post #100, I reckon youre looking at a fair bit less than an SC install (even including the headers) and youre going to have better throttle response and potentially a greater area under the curve as well. Also bear in mind the exhaust, injectors and management would be needed if you went FI anyway. Cheers for input from Mark as well, good to see not everyone writes NA tuning off as a non starter. The point is that its probably time to reconsider this standard "no point tuning without FI" answer, Im personally very interested to see where Ben finishes up as theres some promise here and being Northern hes tight as, so costs wont be too high either
-
Fair comment .......... but mapping is specific to the ECU or software you are using, not the car. I dont know the limits of UpRev but its quite possible you could do it with that if the parameters allow, aforementioned tuners will know I will add that Im not knocking any of our established tuners, just saying that there is a different path that can be followed that would appear to deliver good results. You may well be right on the costs, I wouldnt like to say, but its going to work out cheaper than going SC so is worthy of consideration IMO. ETA: I think youll find Ive mentioned RJN on here a number of times ........... but they are a race team, not a tuner. And I know you dont want to be drawn into the debate Alex (telling people they are "misinformed" probably isnt the best way to go about it TBH), but are you saying that the link I posted on the last page is fabrication? Seems to be quite a lot of supporting evidence to me, Ive read similar elsewhere as well.

The point is that it can be done, and now he has done the research we dont have to bother experimenting with stuff that isnt going to work. When the other option is £4K and upwards this could be a very real alternative to getting more power, one that no-one in the UK has even looked into whcih is pretty poor in 13 odd years of VQ engine tuning.
