We go by more than the first two letters, I imagine other insurers do as well. Some of our high risk areas are banded, eg we have exclusions on all 'M' Manchester' 'L' Liverpool and 'BD' Bradford postcodes. In some areas only certain parts of the postcode are restricted/excluded, as an example we struggle with PR1 - PR9 postcodes but the rest are fine. We do try and look at the bigger picture. In some areas (eg 'WA' Warrington') we look at each risk individually, we even go so far as to google map and area so we can see the address of the customer we are insuring. If we can help someone we will, if we see a good risk in a highrisk postcode and our underwriters have declined the risk, we will query it and try and squeeze it through, in fact this is what I was doing in this case this morning.

On the contrary I feel the the UK's insurance industry is in a complete mess and needs a drastic over haul. It is being killed by no win no fee type cases, people taking the pi** with injury claims, bodyshops going in for every penny, fraudulent claims etc etc but that is a whole different discussion and is not Sky Insurance specific. I've looked into this further, I have reviewed our own claim stats for the area and have spoken to our car club scheme underwriters. Unfortunately I am still unable to find a quotation for this customer. As much as we would like to help, if our underwriters say no then there is little we can do. Ollie Sky Insurance

I am currently looking into this one and doing some indepth research before speaking to our car club scheme underwriters and going back to the customer. The issue IS the postcode, we have restrictions on the DA postcodes as we have experienced a bad claim loss ratio in the area for cars kept on the public road at the home address hence why this has been no quoted. If we can help, we will do our best, if we cannot help we can only apologise. Thanks Ollie Sky Insurance

It is hard to prove unfortunately.

People who say they do not use their car for work, tend to use their car for work.

Yes you are but you wrong on a few of your points or are posting common misconceptions.. It is rare I get involved in a non Sky Insurance specific insurance query as there is so much hatred towards the industry but in this case I'd like to point out a few things: Insurance is higher if; - you get hit by another party (faultless and NO claim on your own policy). Not all insurers load for on-fault claims in fact only a minority do in my experience. - you live in the middle of no-where (police response times are longer so TWOC'ers apparently target these areas). Nonsense - you live in the middle of a city (because thats where all the scum live obviously) Question on this one, if you were running a business and you had one customer living in a high risk city area where there is a proven history of higher claims/loss ratios and then you had a customer living in the middle of nowhere with no claims history, which one would you charge more for? - you have aftermarket parts which are declared and do NOT enhance performance (but the mod is NOT insured for replacement I might add - apparently if you spend 1000's modifying your beloved pride and joy you won't bat an eyelid at twatting round in it at 150mph until you crash and kill everyone). A couple of points on this one. 1) just because a modification does not increase the performance of the vehicle does that mean insurers shouldn't load? Another scenario, customer A has a Standard Honda Civic, customer B has the same Honda Civic but it is painted bright yellow and has a bodykit and bling bling wheels.. which one is more likely going to be broken into/vandalised/stolen? 2) Most specialists will cover modifications on a 'like for like' basis - you have a 'high risk' employment (which makes such a load of difference if your not using the car for work) Again, think of this from a business point of view, customer A is a mobile DJ (very high risk) and customer B working in admin for the local council (low risk), would it not make sense to charge less for the person who is statistically much, much less likely to have a claim? - if you park IN (yes 'in' I did say 'IN......INININININ) a garage your premium will be higher than parking on the drive (because a TWOC'er is more likely to seek the refuge of a garage to nab your motor than he is to do it out in the open on the drive or in the street). If you saw claim stats from cars kept in garages then you'd understand. There are many claims from people who damage their car driving in and out of the garage or damage it whilst keeping it in the garage. As you can probaly see , insurance is all about risks.. rightly or wrongly statistics are what dictate insurance risks and if you think about it, that does make sense. Ollie Sky Insurance

Being honest, I dont give a monkeys and do not 'investigate' behind the scenes. If the chap wants to drive with insurance not worth the paper it is written on, that is his look out. I'm on this forum representing Sky Insurance , not the industry as a whole. Ollie Sky Insurance -
Hmmmmmm....... Drove 300ZX Twin Turbos for 7 years, aged 50+, 9 years protected no claims before leaving the UK to spend 4 years in Canada during which no accidents or claims driving on Snow and Ice for six months of the year, living Wiltshire/Oxfordshire border and wouldn't quote me..................... Yes but the issue wont be with your previous vehicle experience, I will assume it was your lack of UK NCB due to living outside of the UK.

Just a couple of points to note here: Having fully comprehensive cover does not mean you have the DOC extension (driving other cars). For example someone working in the motortrade generally doesn't get DOC cover. Someone with a restricted mileage policy may also not get DOC cover, someone with a classic car policy may not get DOC cover. If you are unsure, check your certificate of insurance or contact your insurance provider. DO NOT ASSUME YOU HAVE IT. I've seen for too many people pick up IN10's for falling into this trap. DOC is given with most TPFT policies and some TPO (third party only) policies as well, it does not just come with Comp cover. Correct, DOC cover will only cover third party damage, ie the car you are test driving is not covered. Ollie Sky Insurance

I'd recommend that you find out exactly what changes have been made to your car and declare them immediately to the insurer. If you have a claim as it stands, you may find your insurance is not worth the paper it is written on.

Insurance. UK vs JDM.... General Jap Motors.
skyinsurance replied to slimjim's topic in Off Topic Discussion
You've just recommended three places where the insurers who advertise with them will more than likely charge more for an import over a UK car. You need to speak to a specialist broker. Slimjim - my recommendation would that your friend joins http://www.itr-dc2.com and gives my company a call. We'd charge no more for an import DC2 over a UK spec, even with the extra BHP you get in a Jap DC2. -
A full years claim free ownership is what insurers want to see, if not then claim free experience of a similar vehicle.

Although we are competitive for the majority, we cannot be competitive each and every time unfortunately, as much as we would like to be. There would also usually be a reason why we are uncompetitive, I am happy to look at your details and see if I can see a reason why, feel free to PM me your surname and postcode if you would like me to do this. Thanks Ollie Sky Insurance

Insurance - difference between Coupe & Roadster?
skyinsurance replied to eftpotrm's topic in Insurance
Have you tried the club insurers for a comparison? The best prices and level of cover are not necessarily found on price comparison sites.. -
We can usually work with mirrored NCB

i know the right and sensible answer but .........

Thanks for trying us. We insure in some Lancashire postcodes, just not all.
