Well, I'm probably more paranoid than most. 10% of death in Ebola outbreaks are in medical staff, infact in the WHO guide to viral Haemorrhagic fever, the death of healthcare workers are often the first signs of a impending out break. Been one of the most experienced/senior medic available oncall over night means i get all the calls about stuff others don't know what to with, when oncall we are covering a population of 700,000 which includes a large immigrant populations, I think I'm entitled to be paranoid....may be just a little

So I wake to this news. http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-29587803 Looks like even the most advanced health care system we have in the west cannot contain the virus. Time to spend all the savings me thinks

So 6hrs into a busy night shift get a call from the local police station. It's the chap who deals with immigration....not too worried at this point, since UKIP haven't quite made it to power yet, so they cannot be trying to deport me already Officer: We've found a chap hidden under lorry, his alright but got a bit of a temperature. Me: Ok, it's 3am, been raining so probably just got the cold. Officer: yeah that's what we think....but his come from Sudan, do we need to do any extra blood tests for you know what. Me: Sudan, that's not a outbreak zone (Quickly double check on Dr Google). Officer: He has also been through Liberia, but we've not talked that much to him yet. Me: Oh....(Quickly finds local Viral Haemorrhagic fever guidelines) Officer: Is there some kind of quick blood test we can do? Me: Right, I've emailed you the local guidelines, if your really worried contact the national infection team, details all there....Make sure you guys wear some protective masks/gowns, give me a call back if your really worried about him. Not heard back so I assume it's all fine!! There's nothing like the fear of a lethal virus to make the night shift go a bit quicker ....but at the same time it's all rather too real.

Would really love one....just one very small problem (well, 100,000 small problem )

LoL, may be ill scare my self some more by watching all the countless virus apocalypse films when i finish this set of night shifts.....only problem been I don't think I'll get very far running away from Zombies in the 335i given how quickly it drink fuel...probably just about make it to somewhere just north of York on the M ways...question is do you go North or South

Good looking car, very envious.....If your after a BBK there's a chap selling £6k worth of brakes for £2.5k on the BMW forums......Please go and buy them off him, because otherwise I'm going too....I'm suppose to have stopped spending money on the 335i, and have just had new EBC discs/pads fitted all around 6 months ago!!

I’ve now had my BMW 335i saloon for roughly the same time period as my Z (3.5 years). I have to say I have found the 3 series to be simply better than the Z in nearly every department, apart from the looks. Interms of driving fun its nearly as good as my old Integra Type R, certainly more fun than the Z….But actually the shape of the saloon have grown on me . And even stock the engine doesn’t sound half bad I love my 335i so much even 3.5 years on I have no interest in changing it any other cars….not even the new M3.

Any one with experience of 'prosumer' DSLR cameras?

Main lens is the Canon 17-55mm IS f 2.8, its basically a 'L' lens without the red ring (but had a price tag to match). Cannot really fault it, the f 2.8 constant aperture is amazing and gives very good results ranging from portrait to landscape. ,/ . The other lens I use for the F1 stuff is the Canon 70-300 IS f4-5.6, at 300mm the quality does drop off, but use it at around 200mm and stepped down its very sharp and actually a very good portrait lens. I'll probably end up getting either the 70-200mm IS L or the 70-300mm IS L, but not entirely comfortable walking around with such a distinctive lens, especially on holiday......I always feel the white L lens are too distinctive, everyone with in 50 meters can tell straight away when your carrying nearly £1K worth of lens on your neck, it’s almost like asking to be mugged. The only other lens I now own is a Tamron 10-24mm, have thought about getting the Canon 10-22mm, but again when stepped down, and avoiding the 20mm+ focal end produces some fab results. So I guess I’m actually very happy with the lens I have now, its just the 550D’s AF system is really starting to annoy me at times, and there are shots which I think should come out well but just aren’t because the AF has mis-focused. It’s only got 1 cross type centre AF point, and than only 9 other AF points, which is fine for a kit lens, but when your using a super fast lens like the 17-55 at f 2.8 because the focusing plane is so shallow you need the AF to be quick and accurate, and I'm fining the AF system on the 550D just cannot deliver consistent focusing results. The other thing I really want is higher ISO shooting, so that I can use higher shutter speeds at night to capture more shots in low light conditions….but again there’s really nothing hugely wrong with the ISO performance of the 550D, below shot is at 3200, which is the absolute MAX the 550D can handle. However the new 7D II, goes up to 51,000!!! and the AF will work down to -3 EV, the 550D’s AF basically stops working at -1EV, so most night shots I have to manually focus. humm……I think I’ve just managed to convince myself I need to swap my 550D for the new 7D II…maybe not just yet, but when the prices fall below £1K I’m going to find it very hard not to buy one -

Whoo didn't expect so much sensible advice!! I think you guys (and my wife) is right, am just getting sucked in by all the marketing Have some good lens already, so I guess I'll keep using the 550D till some used 7D IIs start appearing....My bank account am sure is breathing a sigh of relief. -
So i've had my trusty Canon 550d DSLR for a few years now, have a good selection of lens (All APS EFS lens), but starting to get frustrated by the limitations of the 550d, in particular the lack of AF micro adjusting, poor high ISO performance, and not 100% view finder etc... Have no wish to go Full Frame, the 1.6 crop factor on my 70-300mm lens is perfect, and really cannot afford to spend £2K+ buying new EF mount lens. So the recently announced 7D mark II caught my eye, in particular the AF system sounds amazing, and apparently is nearly as good as the AF system on the top of the range Canon 1xd (£5K camera!!), and the high ISO performance appears to be a real step up from APS sensor cameras. I'm verging pre-ordering the thing, but at £1500 it's hardly a impulse buy....so been trying to justify it some how. Have briefly mentioned it to my wife (not the price), and she made a valid point, why do I need a better camera body when the equipment I have ready can capture shots like these ....... My argument is that a better AF system will allow me to capture more shots with more accurate focus/sharper images, and the higher ISO allows much more freedom at night/dark subjects But than she says.....'why do you need sharper images etc...all you do is look at the photos on the laptop....and the ones we print out are already of good enough resolution.....so getting a new camera is a waste of money (I'm guessing she thinks a new camera is about £200-300, not £1500!!)' So logically I have no answer to her final lot of questions....especially not when you consider the HUGE cost of the 7D body. But the more I read about the 7D Mark II the more I want one.....I'm hoping someone here have access to a 7D or similar, and can convince me that it's a worth while upgrade over something like a 550D

LOL I think for most of us you should replace the words 'sometimes' with 'all the time' Good luck house hunting, if you end up spending the same per month on a house as you did on the 911, around my area your be living very very comfortably!!

Thanks for the info!! Very helpful for those of us that can only dream about owing such a car So all in including fuel it works out at roughly £1300/month (assuming 3 years of ownership?), which for such a second I could nearly justify but than I realise that's nearly double what my 335i has cost me to run/mod/repair for the few years....so sadly I much like a GTR, I don't think I'll ever be able to own/run a 911

Love the HUD, not loving so much the old CCC sat Nav.....you know you can 'upgrade' to the newer CIC sat Nav for £500-600. But ofcourse that pretty much destroys any BMW warranty (BMW main dealer computers will throw up errors when connected to the car).....Mod or not, never a easy question

Looks lovely, am sure your enjoy it

Regardless of if you like the iPhone 6 or not (am not a fan, wouldn't be getting one), Apple is selling shed loads, and making £££ on each one. Unlike other companies Apple seems to be able to defy economics, and make their products more expensive with each upgrade but still they sell like hot cakes.......so frankly I really don't think Tim Cook cares one bit about people comparing the iPhone 6 to older android phones Personally I think smart phones have reached their design peak, hence they are all looking the same, and I think Apple knows this.....hence the Apple Watch was the focuse of the Tim Cooks presentation a few weeks ago. As for the Apple Watch, that does look like a massive step forwards compared to all the other 'smart' watches. I cannot wait to get one regardless of cost, I'm glad Apple made it comparable with the iPhone 5, I would have bought a iPhone 6 just so that I could get the watch....so call me a Apple fanboy but it's my money and I love spending it on useless gadgets

Career Advice - taking the leap **long post**
gangzoom replied to marzman's topic in Off Topic Discussion
Go for it, it's not all about the money but a new challenge to keep your mind working. I've just applied for a new post that actually pays less than current because the work experience available in the new post is simply not available else where.....in the long run though the skills I learn at the new post could increase my earning potential hugely as well opening up more interesting potential jobs -
Was hoping this be the game to tempt me to upgrade the 360/ps3, but the reviews aren't great and doesn't sound that different from Halo

Great race and drive from Hamilton, finally starting to show the form of a world champion!! The double points at the final race is going to be quite something.....I can see the potential for leader of the championship to have a small 'accident' that also happens to take out their team mate

Iron man is crazy!! No way I'm I ever even to think about that Olympic distance is next target....going to work on my swimming and transition time....will try to remember where I racked the bike next time

£500 a month? Including depreciation over the next 3 years, tax, insurance, 2 oil services and an Inspection 1, plus fully comp AUC warranty? Yea, sounds about right But taking depreciation out, it'll cost about £250 per month, which is fine. Insurance, I assume it's at least 1k a year so £100/month Fuel, £70-80 in my 335 gets me less than 300 miles so unless your not driving the M6 at all, at least £100/month AUC - no idea but £50-100/month Servicing items - No 'M' car part will be cheap, and budgeting at least £1k a year on servicing I would say is realistic, so again around £100/month Road tax - £40/month So that's £400-450/month already assuming no nasty surprises and warranty covering all work, and excluding deprecation. I wouldn't want to try and run my 335i on a budget, let alone a full fat M car Good luck with the car hunt though....wish I could be in the same position in regards to cars
-
A while ago I worked out a newish M5 would cost at least £1k/month to keep on the road (including all costs and depreciation but excluding initial purchase price-assuming no finance payments). Even if you take out deprecation I don't think your get much change from £500/month when it comes to running a M6!! But what a car to have though, wish I had bought something like it before I got married and had to think about other things like mortgages/kids

Over 50% of the 550 people that did event at the weekend were newbies Very friendly atmosphere, some one even helped me find my bike at the transition!! So just book on one and than get training!!
-
13 months ago I took my first swimming lesson, and also signed up to a Triathlon as a way to motivate myself.... This weekend I finished my first sprint triathlon, and loved it!! Finished pretty much in the middle of the pack, had a little panic when I couldn't find the bike during the first transition . But overall loved it!! Cannot wait to really improve my swimming during the winter, and than aim to do a proper olympic distance triathlon next summer .... If anyone is half thinking about doing one, cannot recommend it enough, your really just competing against the clock, but having others around you really push you to dig a bit deeper on race day.....But best bit, I can eat like a pig and not have to worry about weight due to the amount of calories the training sessions burn up
