At some point yes, but for now (and probably a while longer yet) the fuel costs of any EV is virtually negligible. Which means you can hammer the loud pedal as much as you like with no worries about mpg, and anyone on here who says they don't care at all about mpg is talking rubbish. My logic is simply so why no jump on the bandwagon when the incentives are still in place, and the current EVs will always be free from road tax forever. I've already got £5K off the list price on the Leaf thanks to the EV grant, getting another £4.5K off the list price on the Tesla. Hopefully the grant will stay in place till around 2020 when the other car will need changing, that'll be close to £15K worth of EV grants we would have claimed. The X we will be keeping for at least 8 years (till the battery warranty runs out), by than hopefully Tesla will offer a battery upgrade for £10-15K, so potentially the X could turn into the family car that will never physically need replacing. But financially in the short term none of the Tesla's make sense. Just take a look at their website and prices, your quickly realise you have to be abit crazy in the head about spending so much money on tech which is still maturing. The price we are paying for the X is more than enough for a house deposit even in the most expensive parts in London, so saving £ is not really the main motivator for me with the Tesla purchase. But I'm are lucky enough to have the disposable income to afford the price of entry, and as much as some of you guys seem to find them 'souless', I find them the exact opposite. I'm willing to pay such high prices for the privilege of been able to experience the future of motoring now, and I cannot wait till prices fall to a point when everyone can join in. Sub 6 second 0-60 times will be the 'norm' for family EVs in a few years time, and the proper fast stuff will all be pushing sub 3 seconds easily. Cannot wait .

Inside "the vault" - Nissan's DNA garage - 56k warning!

If Norway can invest in public EV on street charging I don't see why the UK cannot. In our old house we had a metal loop anchoring point for horses, so times changes and cities adapt. And before anyone worries about the grid, at night the grid demand is about 20GW, out of a max 65GW supply. Given the government push for nuclear which costs the same to run at 100% generating capacity as 10% the electricity supply is a non issue if overnight charging was the norm. http://www.gridwatch.templar.co.uk/

^ How are they suppose to nick a charger?? You have to be pretty stupid to mess around with a cable/charget carrying 240volts and 32amps. The cables are locked into the cars. Charging at home without off road parking is the biggest problem in the UK. Norway has invested loads in off street charging posts in residential areas, cannot see UK city councils doing the same . Lucky for me its not an issue I cannot see a situation where we'll be in a house without a driveway. Even my parents are lucky enough to have off road parking in Zone 3 London. But it a problem that does need to be sorted. BMW have developed a charger that can connect via lamp posts, but again it'll require investment from central government which in the UK just isn't going to happen.

I agree with you, but autonomy is coming even without EVs. Not if people don't buy them. So don't buy one Supply and demand. Am not, our car doesn't and will never have autopilot enabled. By mid next year all the Quashqais Nissan is selling by the truck load will have some form of autopilot software though!!!
-
I agree with you, but autonomy is coming even without EVs. Nissan is putting the first generation of their propilot software into a Quashqai not the Leaf. BMW are pushing it in their 7 series not the i cars. I don't think legislation will force autonomy through, itll be the insurance companies. If autonomy enabled cars do end up crashing less the insurance premiums of all other cars will simply go up. But having tired autopilot on a Tesla I have to say we are a long long way off that currently, and the Tesla autopilot tech is by far the most advanced. Its currently just a gimmick, about as useful as auto high beam headlights, and you have to be a fool to think its got any ability to 'drive' the car, as the much highlighted death of a guy letting autopilot 'drive' the car whilst watching a DVD shows. Which is why I haven't ordeted it on my car. As for keeping your V6, no one is going to take anything away from you. But EVs are doing to the car market what smart phones did to the mobile world. Rember the days when the battery in a mobile would last a week without charging.... And now everyone is fine with the concept of charging your smartphone every night .

Anyone who buys a Tesla on green credentials nees their head checking. The amount of resources and energy consumed to produce something like a Model X must be mind boggling. I certainly aren't buying one because they are 'green', show me a combustion engine that can deliver the same instant throttle response for the same type of economy and ill look again. The combustion engine really is outdated tech in this day and age. Within a few years virtually all the major manufacturers will be shifting to EVs, like it or not.

I wish it was as cheap as white goods, an unbelievable amount of cash to waste on any car!!! Makes a brand new M3 look cheap in comparison.

I agree if you want absolute engagement nothing will be beat some thing like my old DC2 Teg, or an Elise, and as you say it's not actually about the speed. But for real life use and inparticular as a family car EVs are the future for us. Our Model X isn't even that quick (6 second to 60), but the massive amount of cargo space and unbeatable crash protection is much more important for our purposes (yes I'm joining the if my sporg is in a massive/heavy car they are safer club - Unlike other SUVs the X isn't any more likely to roll compared to a saloon). I really cannot wait for it to come now that the order is finally about to be confirmed. At some point I still want a DC2 Teg as a fun sunny weekend car, but that's all it'll be, a hobby, a bit like horse riding is now. For the actual purpose of getting from A to B it's EVs all the way for us in future.

Not that its any use in real life, but 300 miles of real world range and 0-60 in 2.5seconds in a family saloon. https://www.engadget.com/2016/08/23/tesla-unveils-100-kwh-battery-pack-for-model-x-and-s/

Well I've already been to the world's first Supercharger, and Teslas design studio in LA. Next trip to the US ill be getting a factor tour. Its also a virtual certainly I'll be ordering the Model 3 to go along side the X once it hits production
-
I'm more passionate about EVs these days than any combustion car I've owned befofe . Have a plan in place to push things along, so I'll see how things go when I call them up today.
-
I've thought about cancelling the order but sadly there is no alternative. If the Porsche Mission E is out I would order that instead, but as it stands there is no other EV like the X or S on the market. I suspect the sales teams know this. Going back to a combustion car is not going to happen, itll be like asking me to ditch the smart phone for a old Nokia, that path is a non starter.

Actually biggest issue I'm having is getting Tesla Birmingham to swtich my Model S order to an X...Considering am asking them to swtich the order to one worth £10k more than the original order they are been unbelievably slow (10 working days and counting). Apparently they are rushed off their feet, but I still would expect some better communication from them considering we are talking about a car order thats equal to a decent house deposit in London town... I cannot see how they are going to cope when the Model 3 finally comes out.

^I charge my Leaf overnight at home whilst I sleep for about 2p per mile with a 32amp socket. I'll do the same with Tesla. I've done 10k miles now in the Leaf with no issues despite a range of less than 90 miles. Been able to wake up with a fully charged car each morning is so much easier than having to find a petrol station. If you haven't been in a modern day EV I suggest a test drive, the tech is now astonishing. The Model X is in a different league to any other car on the road, it even makes the S feel rather ordinary, but costs less than the equivalent Range Rover. I cannot wait for ours to arrive sometime Feb 2017:).

^ As far I know this is the only fire in a Tesla this year. Given there are now 130k+ Model S running around the world not on fire its hardly a major concern.
-
Lithium is one of the most volatile metals around. The car it self is aluminium which has a much lower melting point than steel. So when it burns it really burns. Add in superchargers now are reportly delivering 150KW, its amazing there hasn't been any more fires. The last one was in Norway which was triggered by a problem with a temporary supercharger. Porche is working on a 800Volt EV charging solution for the Mission E, wouldn't want to be standing nearby when one of those units go pop.

Don't worry about your age, we have quite a few friends similar age go through similar things last few years. They are now all in new relationships and a couple are getting married. What they found was people in their 30's are much more mature, and know what they want, so when you find someone there is none of the games people play you get when your in the 20's. Match.com has worked well for a few people I know, so don't get down, instead see it as a opportunity for something better.

It took me one afternoon to download, install all the needed software. WinKFP lets you do so much I don't see any reason not to install it. -

Your need to code the new battery ASAP or else your soon see random errors. Its not hard once you get INAP and WinKFP working and installed on your laptop. Its a faff getting it all to install properly, bu well worth the effort, once installed it lets you do dealer level software changes/diagnostics from the comfort of your own driveway. I can send you the USB cable I use to use if you PM and cover the postage. -
No one pays the list price on any BMW. 10% off is minimal discount you should be pushing for.

The X is very much been bought In view of family duties. The space in the back in the 6 seater config is amazing, that's much more important to me these days than 0-60 times etc. Price wise it's still cheaper than a Range Rover and Caynne. We may end up getting a S anyway a few years down the line to replace wife's car. All depends on just how good the Porsche Mission E turns out.
-
So after waiting for ages before putting down our Model S order I've cancelled it.... But don't worry I haven't gone mad, instead of the S we are now expecting a oversized, electric SUV with those silly gull wing doors By no means a 'drivers' car, the X is slower, more expensive, and has less range than the equivalent spec S but as a family wagon there's nothing else on the planet like it, and it makes the S feel a bit rather ordinary. Delivery expected Feb 2017, cannot wait.

You done the right thing. Life is far to short to waste time dewelling on things that don't make you happy. The feeling you have now will pass and in 6 months time your look back and wonder what the fuss was about. Go and spend some time on the car/gym etc to take your mind of things .

The Toyota hybrid system is far more reliable than any turbo engine. There is a reason why every other minicab you see is a prius. And in the US there countless companies that will refurb the battery pack.
