I've got an Evo V1 with circa 400/400 and its a completely different car to the zed. Much faster, banshee acceleration, etc, but it lacks the finess of the Zed. It really depends on what you want from your car. If its outright performance then you would possibly be better looking for something else. If however you want a balance between good performance, a nicely balanced chassis and a fairly civilised drive, the Zed takes some beating.
As has already been said, you should upgrade the fluid and pads for starters. Something like Castrol SRF fluid and possibly DS 3000 pads for harder use. You're going to shred whatever tyres you fit so its really about the trade off between cost and performance. I don't have any experience of Toyo R1s so can't comment on them. I have used PS2's for some time now though and they are excellent in both wet and dry conditions, but do cost more than most.
Under most circumstances I would agree that its not good practice to mix different tyres. In this instance, however, I can confidently say that I have just driven all through the winter with this combination and at no point did I feel they were not working together.
In my experience you shouldn't have any problems at all. I am currently running PS1's on the front and PS2's on the rear for similar reasons to your situation.
