Advance driving tuition - anyone had any?????
Chris`I replied to adammitch69's topic in 350Z General
I've heard these days are very good and you get a discount off certain forums if you are a member. Milford is very good as it has a whole host of places to test your car from skidpans to a mountain road. Looks very good -
Dont worry chap, its not mine, I stole the pic from somewhere. I know you have to handle airbags with care, I've had the drivers one out a few times to re-finish the steering wheel Re the thickness of the material - thats whats putting me off doing it atm. The stuff I have is foam backed so dont think it will take well to the dash around the vents. Might have to buy some proper alcantara which isnt foam backed to do it. But first we need to work out how the air bag works Well you can get round problem by trimming the foam backing off the material when its near the edge of the vent for example - that way you dont have that problem - in fact trim it a few mill before the edge so as you stretch the fabric round you get a nice tapered effect - hang on for my guide and you will see what I mean - a picture speaks a lot more than my words!!! Dont worry, I'm waiting! I only got 4m of material off the fella, so need to order more, will wait for your guide before starting it all again

Awesome. How much money cosists of the winning bribe this year? Dont think my tenna made it last time I can post several calndars to one person with the same effort as one I know what all my friends and family will be getting for xmas this year

Good stuff guys. Stan: Until we take apart the dash or know exactly how it works, I wont be sticking anything to the dash! I'm definately not going to just wing it and hope if works. If it turns out it punches a hole in the dash (most likely) I think it will need to be done in two pieces and will just have to live with seeing the join. It will still look better than stock! I'm sure this was in a members for sale (R35LEE?) pic, but cant find the proper thread now, anyway stolen off ebay:

Yeah its a real shame if you do have to sell it. Was good to meet you all. Bit nippy, but will have to try and make it every time as I missed loads this year. -

Nice one Stan From what I've seen, I would guess the airbag breaks through the large upper dash panel rather than flipping the whole thing back. I've seen a pic of the dash off with the airbag attached to it and it fills only the central portion which is why I would expect it to come out the centre.

Well there is the other end of the car park if you want to meet before so we all go in together and get spaces next to each other. As you come in the meet is in the Comet car park on the left, but we could go right and meet in that car park, then drive across? Either that or whoever gets there first bagsie some spaces. The problem is getting them all together. I normally go next to the MLR as my mate has an Evo -
The problem with the fake stuff is that its meant to fade and wear. However given the stuff I got was like £10/m and real Alcantara is £60/m I was willing to give it a try
-
Yeah thats the way I was thinking it would have to be done. Just unsure as to how you finish it like that. I guess you would roll the sides on both pieces so they touch like this )( butted together. Would have to be a very accurate fold

Yeah thats what I was thinking. They close down Green Park too, so we cant meet in there. Not sure any local roads will be available to meet up before hand. Rob - I take it they dont close off the Comet et al car park, so how do they stop fans parking in there? I see we might get some resistance gettin in there -
Yeah that sounds like a plan matey. I was just wanting to make sure what I thought I thought was what you thought The bit you are losing me on is the overlapping fabric. Are you saying to have no material attached via glue to the passenger side, or have some, with a hole, glued on, then a seperate piece that overlays that which is glued only over the centre bit where the airbag will come from?

2005 Veilside 350Z - CHEAP, QUICK SALE NEEDED! £14,500!!!

Those ESR stickers must be worth £5k in advertising -
Stan, just been re-reading what you put (sorry tend to skim read at work, no time to dwell on things), and lets see if I get what you are saying. For the passenger side, you cover it in material, but would leave a cut out for the airbag. Then take another piece which is slightly bigger than the hole and tuck the edges under (neatly!), then glue this in the hole so that there is a gap in the glue which means when the airbag fires there is a weak point for it to go through as normal? So you cant do a truely seamless airbag bit, but you can make it look nice and neat with a little overlap?
-
Well imagine you are rolling pastry over - just a small lip to be turned over - its hard to explain in words? Failing that - turn the material over a bit bigger than you need - sew it on a fine stitch setting and then just cut the excess material off (from underneath) then you just glue the whole thing on top of the airbag (no need to switch off) Come on Chris you've done a good job so far - go for it! My sewing machine is a manual Singer from the 1920's yes a proper tredle job - never get it in the Zed!!! Ha ha would just give Ebized more ammunition to take the p*** out of my Granny driving!! LOL - well may give it a go! BTW the pic I posted earlier was just an example of flocking, its not my work. Mine doesnt look half as good as that
-
Damn, thats a shame, it sounds so difficult! And not sure Amanda will let me disable the air bag on her side just so the dash can look pretty Think you need to be the club retrimmer Stan, can bring your sewing machine to the Wales meets and do us stuff on the spot
-
Ahhh Stan, now I know where to send my bits to that are too complicated for me!! Got word back from the flocker and they can only do the dash if you disable the passenger airbag. What can you do about it if you chose to retrim in Alcatara? Is it possible to make a weak spot in the material it can pop through? Wasnt a bad price for the flock, £90 to do the 4 squarer bits that form the upper and lower dash. Tempted to get the centre console done though. Evo stick is nasty stuff, but dont half bond stong! Used it to bond stuff before and as you say it can melt stuff! I just used autoleads spray glue. Its not the strongest stuff in the world, but as Mark says you can remove it. Plus, the foam on teh back of the material I have doesnt seem to be super strong, it gives up before the glue, so dont think I need anything stronger.
