Nissan want to make it hard for aftermarket tunning, especially after old gen modded Skylines were running 700 bhp plus on Nissan Ecu. Same with new GTR which will make it even harder to muck about with ECU & bolt on mods being adapted by ECU. Only diff with JDM ECU is it is mapped to run on 100 octane (or 100plus) fuel so if you fill up with 99 Ron or more here in UK you should see better performance figures than a UK zed, same model, running on see 99 Ron fuel which will be mapped to lower octane fuel.

Good Info mate Andy I dont suppose you know what fuel you used last time & this time. Also how long the fuel was sitting in the car on each ocassion? This could have some substantial effects. I find mine runs best (feels most powerful) in the first week after filling up with Tesco 99 Ron. ps How much was the rolling road? I want to get mine done now! Maybe a group rolling road day is in order!! Anyone know a good place in & around London? There is Power Engineering in Uxbridge but not sure on their reputation

IV BOOKED Everyone else get ur finger out & book it!! ps at the moment doesnt look very busy which means it will most probably be open pit lane due to less cars. Which means more track time than if sessioned. I phoned & bkd on Tel: 01332810048 Just need to order some brake fluid now & get that changed next week. -
Exactly, for same money youl get a 2001 or 2002 Turbo, with higher miles, same with GT3. After doing a bit of research it seems that the 996 engine block was rushed through to production without too much research & testing by Porsche. It was at a time when Porsche were in trouble financially & it was their first attempt at water cooled. It was this 996 however that saved their bacon & with its huge sucsess helped them to where they are today. But overall the engine is almost a 10 year design (the 3.6 being a couple of years younder) & one that can suffer from many smaller problems (RMS) & catastrophic problems with no recourse but a new engine at huge expense. IMO this does not happen to all 996 but a fair few to make buying a bit of a gamble, the only way to buy would be with annual £895 Porsche warranty. But even then that does not exscuse Porsche & mean I should turn a blind eye to the cars problems just because it will get fixed free under warranty. The reason I looked at Porsche is purely because it is the everyday, reliable supercar & is not a tempremental Ferrari etc, but that does not seem to be the case with the 996. Yes it wont go wrong half as often or frequently as a Ferrari, but if I was thinking along those lines I would then consider a second hand Ferrari 360 Modena with Ferrari warranty etc. I think ideally the only Porsche I would now consider would be the far better built & better quality latest 997 shape. Second hand prices for a std 997 (not S) have dropped down now to approx £44k & in approx 18 months will be in the high £30k's. This makes the 996 proposition even less appealing & will no doubt cause bigger depreciation hits on the old 996. I think in 18 months to 2 years time a 997 will make a good second hand buy..........but by that time so will a second hand Nissan GTR!!!!!

Im booking tmrw morning first thing! Anyone else tmrw? -
Yeah I know, but I didnt think it was that bad till I read the above link!! Thanks mate Seriously re-considering, seems like the old favourite CLS55 Merc engine is made out of rock in comparison! I think to buy a 996 you really must have the annual Porsche warranty renewed at £900 per year. Where as with Merc this would not be neccesary in most circumstances.

Hmmmmmm.. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=48&t=200454&i=0 Maybe an engine swop with the multi award winning VQ35DE is required!

Agree with what you have said mate. The inexplicable feeling you get sitting inside one; the ambience inside; the hollow mettalic sound of the door being shut; & the sound of that flat six at the back (especially with the sport exhaust option) is indescribable on paper. Thats even without actually driving it!! I am very impressed with the quality of the whole car & the fact that as you say "ticks all the boxes" : it can be taken round & track; to the shops; around europe; seat children (or small hobbit like adults in the back!) & is a practical sports car. With a manual gearbox (which I want) Porsche give figures of 0 to 60mph in 5.1sec which many say is rather modest. I do agree that they can be a bit common, especially the 996 shape; hence if I do get one am more inclined towards the rarer, turbo styled C4S......& then tweak it a little here & there..

After a bit of research unfortunately the cabriolet is out due to the rear seats being almost vertical & very small! So as well as the Merc CLS55 AMG I am down to these two: 03 or 53 plate 996 C4S Unfortunately not my ideal choice in terms of driving dynamics as it is 4 wheel drive, but it looks fantastic compared to the 996 (2 wheel drive), as it is wide bodied like the Turbo. In fact it is near identical to Turbo & shares same brakes/suspension & lots of extras than 996 (2) or a 04 plate 996 (2 wheel drive) with Aerokit (or can be without) True 911 rear wheel drive, drivers car, more responsive & more fun to drive than above, but not as imposing as above as not wide bodied. Also this will be approx £3k to £4k cheaper than C4S Opinions on these two if any please?

Bringing back this much loved topic that I spend sleepless nights debating in my minds private forum... I have now come to a two new front runners to the "what next in a year or twos time". Criteria: Must have at least some kind of rear seating (Hence Europa/Z4M/CaymanS is out) Must look beautiful Must be as powerful or more powerful than zed Must have some luxury & prestige (hence my earlier thoughts on Mitsus & Scoobys are out) Budget approx £35k & prefer manual gearbox. I have now come down to these two: 1) 2004 Porsche 996 Cabriolet (not 4 wheel drive, though the C4S looks the best IMO) Though I am a bit of a tart & miss having a convertible, a coupe would be approx £1k to £2k cheaper & have bigger rear seats & handle better. 2) OR a 2005 Mercedes CLS55 AMG Ideas & thoughts appreciated
