  2. For the uneducated - *work Mode* There are 3 main systems for lashing containers on a dedicated container vessel. In the hold, cell guides are used. These are vertical strips of steel running the height of the hold, exactly one container apart. Effectively allowing containers to be stacked on one another with movement. On deck, the four corners of the container are secured to the one above and below (or the hatch if its the first height) by use of twistlocks. I would find a pic for you if this net connection wasnt so crap And finally you have lashing rods/bars which stretch from the corner of a box, down to bottlescrew securing points on the deck. By tightening the bottlescrew and placing tension onthe rods, you hold the contaier stack to the deck *work mode off* Hope that helps a little. I'll sort some pics out when I get home unless osmeone beats me to it
  3. Never heard of that one. But I did sail on Sealands D9J class which were first generation boxboats built in the late 70's. They all had underdeck lashings. Though at somepoint theyd had the sense to retrofit cellguides. The old lashing system was still down there rusting away though. Stan - Most companies run "dry" ships now. No rum. And as for interesting places.........one container terminal in the middle of nowhere looks very much like another container terminal in the middle of nowhere. Only the language of the stevadores, and the standard of the pilot/tugs change. We were lucky if we got 12 hours in port when I was still deep sea! And Id be working a minimum of 6 of those!
  4. Im not even certain my first ship is still floating anymore! If I ever develop any weird form of cancer thats the boat Im blaming! Will have to find a pic of it when I have an internet connection that isnt governed by the goverment!
  5. At the risk of post hijacking, I have exactly the same phone for sale, same spec. Pm if interested
  6. We are very serious professionals who do not like our chosen careers being mocked........ Sh!t, just dropped the soap
  7. I may appreciate you, but Id still give you grief if the lashings were crap! My major annoyance was when you lot didnt put lashing bars back in their racks if they weren't getting used again on the same bay.
  8. Could be anything unless you can shed some light on anything iffy thats been going with the car..... Could try the ECU reset. Whcih will clear the code. Or you could take it to dealers and let them hook up diagnostics to get fault code and charge you for the pleasure.
  9. Had an AEM CAI on my RX-8. Pain in the arse to fit as had to remove front bumper. Dont know if thats needed with a Zed. Most folk go for JWT pop chargers, but they aint treu Cold Air Induction.
  10. I remember chatting to one of the foremen about it. Horrific story. Seen some pretty bad injuries to stevadores in the past though. Had a guy in America fall through an open manhole, fracture his cheek bone, and lose sitght in his ey cos the splinters of his cheek penetrated it. Regardless what people say, Stevadores and ships crew dont bloody get paid enough for the hazards.
  11. Only got a 2 bedroom flat! And havent even moved into it yet! Stew - thats half hour on 70mph dual carriageways. The seagulls make more noise than Croft does from where I am!
  12. You'' be welcome to crash at mine and Lauras place for that if you didnt fancy driving cross country early in the morning. Only live half hour from the circuit
  13. Wasnt there, but heard about it. Was there a few days after a trainee crane driver managed to fall from one of the portainers. Think that was in 2003. Or was that Thamesport? They all kinda blend into one big container terminal after youve been to a few!
  14. We had Emmas sister ship in too once. Been a Trinity Berth-Op for about six years now. If you have any say in the matter of lashing gear, could you make a case to go back to the old hook-end bottlescrews as opposed to the new opentype bottle screws with one way ratchet nuts? I used to love the hook-end ones, so much easier to lash and unlash. Well, you should be able to pick me out easily in the winter, I usually wear a shemagh and wrap it round my head to look like a terrorist. I escaped the Borg late last year. Had enough of the deep sea nonsense. But I know exactly what you are saying about those bottlescrews! I work for SFPA at the moment harassing Scottish Fishermen, but hope to be shifting companies again in the near future.
  15. I'll deffo be at Croft (ship rotas allowing) Will try and make as many others this year as I can too

  19. Think I just found my next ebay purchase - just ran out of Megs NXT
  20. How did I miss this thread!? Congrats Liam. Im sure you'll have the wee one spamming the forum in no time!
  21. I had a wander around the Emma whilst she was being built in Odense. Was there about a week before the fire which destroyed her accomodation. They are impressive pieces of kit. I sailed on the B-Class with Maersk which were pretty much a miniture version of the E-class. If you lashed over at Trinity, I probably seen you! Been in loads on the G's and B's over the past 8 years. Al
  22. well Im completely buggered as I cant even access the site using my ships net connection! Think I'll just stay in the bar at Quindao - some nice things to look at here
  23. I cant see the pics on using my ships sat connection unfortunatly. Isnt the Languard extension the one that Maersk is funding? I seem to remember last time I was in Felixstowe (2007), our agent was giving out leaflets and telling us all how great the new terminal will be. (*mutters something abou the borg taking over the world...*)
