Well the mystery deepens. I spent some time spraying around the hoses and throttle bodies and definitely can not find a leak. I tried all the resets again, and the whole flashy CEL to solid etc definitely goes through, and then when you start the engine the rpm tries to lower and settle down, but it is almost as if it gives up. Where the real mystery seems to be coming is with the following additional symptoms. After performing the Air Idle Learning and it decides to idle high, turning on the rear screen heater and the aircon makes the rpm drop and become more steady (I find this really bizarre as usually putting air con on increases rpm). The car also seems to become insanely hot in the engine bay, much hotter than when I park up after a spirited drive through Yorkshire on the way home where I'm normally enjoying the Yorkshire roads and would expect a bit of residual heat. I was wondering if it was possible that I might have introduced an air bubble into the cooling some how and this is causing issues? I really am stuck for what to try next. I'm guessing taking the misses to visit her family over the Easter break (530 mile round trip) is off the cards now. Appreciate any comments Edit: It also seems to be a little smokier out the back than I would expect. I am now starting to **** my pants a little. How can cleaning throttle bodies cause so much hassle!!!

How to - ECU, Accelerator Pedal & Throttle Valve resets
jowen7448 replied to M13KYF's topic in 350Z Guides
I am intrigued as to what the difference is between the Accelerator Pedal Release Position Learning and the Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning is. It appears to me that on performing APRP you are also performing the 2 steps needed for TVCP. Also would it not be the case that TVCP takes place every time I turn the ignition off after a journey? This also makes me wonder about the need to perform both first in the Idle Air Learning. I am not disputing the information in the OP just intrigued and seeking clarification. -
Hmmm, will go back out in a min and check the gaskets. MAFs should be all plugged in and fine etc. Gave these a clean the day before and she was running no issues. Up until about half an hour ago I was 100% sure that everything was fully unplugged before I touched a butterfly. I don't know if paranoia is now making me doubt myself somewhat. I'm still pretty sure that I didn't touch them. I keep getting the impression that the Idle Air Learning isn't taking for whatever reason. Which is annoying as it's a pain doing it manually a few times before it seems to work and then it doesn't actually solve the problem anyway.

Went over all the bits that were removed in getting the throttle bodies off, can't find any leaks, everything seems torqued up, tried the reset procedures again, no change in the outcome. I feel like I am being punished for trying to look after my car. Does any have any other suggestions. I read on the American forum that it's not always the case that the Idle Air learning takes. I am doing this via the peddle dance method rather than consult so I have no way of knowing whether it successfully completes or not I guess. It does the whole flashing CEL light then going solid etc. And when I then turn engine on the idle does initially drop before returning to crazy mode. Not a happy bunny right now.

Thanks for the suggestion, will have a coffee while the engine bay cools down a bit and then go out and have a nosey.

Thanks, so that would be somewhere between the MAF and throttle body on each side correct? Just trying to narrow down my search space.

Well what started as an idea to do a simple 20 minute job of cleaning the throttle bodies is slowly becoming more of a nightmare. Apart from being rock solid to get the damn things off in the first place (earlier thread here: http://www.350z-uk.com/topic/106885-advice-wanted-on-removing-throttle-bodies/) I succesfully got them off and went on my merry way. Short version of the story: Had unplugged ECU and power supply to them, took them off. Used a load of carb cleaner, gunk poured off, look much more shiny, butterflies didn't feel as sticky as when removed (note was unplugged and completely removed from the garage before touching buttefly), wiped off excess carby, let them dry, all back on, hoses connected plastics reattached bla bla bla, jobs a good un. Was late at night so left the peddle dance resetting til this morning. Well did peddle dances, got the flashy CEL etc to make me think it was all hunky dorey, idle seemed to settle back down after the Idle Air Volume learn, maybe a little high but wasn't massively worried. Great I thought, she sounds healthy. Gone to fill up with Shells finest and whilst stopped at light idle decides it has got a mind of it's own. Bobbing around from 1500 to 2000 in a pulsating manner. Every time the idle comes down before bobbing up again, at the bottom of the needle travel, it sounds like ****. Have tried the reset again, and as before it seems to settle down, until I actually go anywhere and then it goes a bit nuts again. The couple of mile trip in a circle netted me only 8 mpg average (the counter had reset itself due to battery disconnect) and whilst I know it was a short trip with a cool engine this seems particularly low. Especially since I was hardly motoring it and I have never seen it this low yet. (I reset the mpg average every time I fill up) Naturally I am livid with myself. Have I done something awful here? I know there is the possibility to corrupt the ECU but I thought this was only possible if one did not disconnect the battery, which I did. Is it a case of just trying the resets again until it seems to be ok? I have no CEL or anything. Anyone got any advice? Am I potentially causing damage? I am supposed to be partaking in a 280 mile trip tomorrow and am now more than a little concerned. Comments welcome.

Completely agree, never been a fan of this nurse the tyres rubbish that we have now. Having better mechanical grip would also alleviate some of the issue with following in dirty aero and with drivers pushing flat out, small mistakes here and there will follow which will give some nice close on track battles. And of course leave qualifying alone!!!

That was with aircon off

Ha I was thinking this when reading the above post, scrolling down I saw you beat me to it

I see that the powers that be have decided a possible U turn on the U turn (an O turn??) when it comes to the qualifying and that in fact some form of elimination qualy will still occur at Bahrain. http://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/f1-now-evaluating-elimination-qualifying-tweaks-for-bahrain-681873/ Nice to see that they all have clear plans of action when it comes to the future of the sport.

I cleaned throttle bodies last night, didn't get chance to do all the peddle dancing since for the Idle Air Volume Learning you need to warm the car and rev it up and since it was gone 11pm I didn't think neighbours would appreciate it so much. Did the ECU reset, Accelerator Pedal Release Position, Throttle Valve closed Position and then Idle Air Volume just now and the idle seems a little on the high side (a nudge under 1000). I am pretty sure I got the dances correct as per the thread on them here. Does idle of 1000 seem a bit high? I will run her out shortly to get some fuel and see how she feels but wondered if anyone had any comments?

Bah, rather annoyed by this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-35889736

I really enjoyed the race on Sunday. Was a little peeved at the qualy show having got myself up early to watch it but glad to see that this has been reverted for the next race. I am sure that over time it would have improved slightly, particularly in Q1 and Q2, I think Q3 in that format was beyond saving but much preferred the previous system anyway. As long as we don't have a season full of changing qualy rules like we did 10 years ago then I can be grateful. Glad to see the drivers are making a bit of a stand too, I always find it strange that they often aren't even asked for their opinions on proposed changes, I can see the folly in allowing them to actually vote on changes but I think their thoughts should be at least considered. Looking forward to the next race and hopefully a competitive title race, although I would add that I would be happy if the champion at the end is the same as the last couple of years. Also looking forward to silly season and prospective seat hopping with some good seats potentially up for grabs. I get a gut feeling that should Rosberg not be convincingly leading the title race come summer he may be searching for somewhere else to drive, and if that happens to not be Ferrari ( which I don't think it would be) I think this could well be his last title shot. Not sure who I would replace him with but I would bet my bottom dollar that Alonso is desperate for that seat and would do near anything to get it, not saying of course he will get it but I bet his management have already been in touch. Not sure who I fancy for taking Kimi's seat either ( really can't see him keeping that again without a dramatic turn around in recent form from him) would be nice to see Grosjean have another shot in a fast car as I was really impressed with him at the end of the competitive Lotus spell.

I suspected as much, seems fine so far. Not run her out yet, will get round to it later, but sat idling in the garage she seems fine.

Thanks, by the time I had read your comment I had actually finished. I have seen this suggestion before and whilst useful I would always completely remove the throttle body to clean it anyway (as I did this time too) which necessitates it being disconnected from the power with force of habit making me always disconnect the battery before pulling plugs. I am not worried that I have corrupted ECU or anything but assume if I had there would be symptoms and a CEL?

As mentioned in another post I am in Leeds, but thanks for the kind offer. Always nice when people offer to lend a hand. Although if you ever desperately fancy doing the trip to Leeds in order to lend a hand for something I wouldn't turn you away Throttle bodies cleaned and reinstalled last night.

Thanks for replies all. Had a walk out to pick up some Allen key sockets for my 3/8. By the time I had sorted dinner out for the misses it was quite late when I started but all done now and some much cleaner throttle bodies reinstalled. Doubt they had ever been cleaned before. They were covered in crud. Will test drive tomorrow see if she feels any more responsive or smoother.

I don't have any particularly decent Allen keys. Wondering if getting an Allen attachment for my current socket set would be a worthwhile investment.

Hi all, I was after some advice for removing the throttle bodies on my HR to give them a nice clean. I have removed covers and hoses etc so access isn't the issue. It's that the Allen bolts are well and truly not shifting and was after advice on how to loosen them up. I have tried a light tap with a hammer on the end of an Allen key but didn't want to tap too hard as I know I don't want to shock the throttle body too much, am I correct in thinking I shouldn't try too hard with the hammer? I was also wondering whether or not it was advised to use something like WD40 on the bolts or heat to try to loosen them up a bit, I am not massively keen on the WD40 idea but since I will be giving them a good clean afterwards would this be ok? The heat idea is almost a non starter as i don't think I have a suitable heat source at the moment. Any suggestions welcome.

When i first tried to pair my phone ( A blackberry classic so not old ) the pairing process would go through and then about 10 seconds later it would tell me that it was disconnected again. I read somewhere (Can't for the life of me remember where) that bluetooth connection was a two stage process and that pairing and connection had to each pass. Anyway having tried a few times and having my phone disconnected each time I tried pairing and then immediately making a phone call from the car (misses was confused why I was calling her from our garage). This went through fine and I have never had a problem since. Phone always connects and doesn't get booted off again until I switch off the ignition, make and receive calls all the time with no issues. I don't know if this will potentially solve your problem or not or I had some strange fluke of circumstances, but thought I would share my experience.
