Sounds like the driver improvement course is the way to go, if you get the chance. Do they teach how NOT to get caught? Or how to blag it ?

Its nice to hear that you eventually got it sorted, what I hate the most is Insurers that take your money, then find any excuses/stalling technique or they don't pay out. you give up. This happened to me once, but the guy that crashed into me settled in cash, cash speaks.
