  1. Good to hear

I love oil pressure gauges, they can stop you blowing a motor

Oil lights are a waste of dash space, engines RIP by the time that comes on most of the time

She just wanted to know you'd love her!

    Enjoy

  2. Just another thing to try

If gauge reads without the engine running, unplug the sender.

If it the gauge then reads zero, it can only be the sender

If it still reads it's the gauge, unless it's a wiring fault, but that's really unlikely

120psi after 10mins of driving, at idle is definitely not right

  3. Firstly hello and welcome

If the car is unknown, I'd always do a complete fluids and filter change.Even with a few stamps in a book, who knows what they put in it

Oil, water/antifreeze, gear and diff oils, air and oil filter possibly plugs too

A flush with Wynns engine flush prior to dropping the oil removes loads of crap from the engine, I swear by it

Ideally change to cheap oil, run it for 500miles, dump it and change to good oil and a decent filter

But do this after you've sorted the gauge

Never blindly ignore something because it maybe a faulty sensor.....

It may be telling the truth

I agree, gauge should read zero with motor stopped

When cold, 80-90psi depending on outside air temp

The gauge will read 120 if blipped from cold

Hot tick over around 20-30psi, no less than 14psi

As stated 2500rpm, 60psi or there abouts

Oil pressure is revs not speed related, but warm engines will read less than cold

If the gauge reads with out the engine running it can only be the sender or the gauge, most likely sender as the gauge is more likely to read out even with power off.

Ideally get a local mechanic to hook up a mechanical gauge to check the readings, if not, then you'll have to just swap the sender I am afraid and hope it's not the gauge

I am sure you'll sort this easily, I've only had mine 6 months and had virtually no oil pressure, but that ended well, wonderful cars

Good luck, let us know how you get on

  4. I agree,

Nissan denying there is a problem when clearly there is, seems to be their attitude to most things.

It took me ages to find this, as it's not something you'd normally expect to look for.

God only knows what a main dealer would charge for the job

  5. Hello,

I am new to the 350z, but thought I'd share my experience of my low oil pressure HR engine.

I bought the car an 07 roadster with 82k on the clock in San Marino blue

The car was in above average condition for the mileage, but the oil pressure was reading low.

I was assured by a few threads on forums including this one that the gauge was probably wrong, or an oil change would sort it out.

It sounded great no rumbles, knocks, or squeals and no smoke.

It went well too, in fact had it not been for the gauge, you'd swear it was fine.

My gut feeling was to leave it there

    So

I kicked the tyres, said I hated the colour, which I love, sucked air through my teeth and got the dealer to drop it 500quid, sold as seen

A bargain at 6500 for an 07 313 roadster, which just needs an oil change...

    WRONG!

On the way home CEL came on, but still running well so what the hell, ECU missed a reading, so what?

Under tray came loose so had to tied up with fence wire

    But we got home

    Oil pressure readings were

15psi cold on tick over, 80psi revved

3psi hot tick over, 50psi revved

The next few weeks I changed the oil and flushed it out with Wynnes engine cleaner

    No better

Checked the cars gauge using a mechanical one

    It was reading right

CEL was P0014, P0024, exhaust VVT, but could also be P0011, P0021inlet VVT

Caused by the low oil pressure

I dropped the sump to see if there was a blockage in the pick up

This was clean, but I found a small piece of paper gasket

I now spent a month on research and found this article

It's quite long but worth the read

    http://g35driver.com/forums/g35-sedan-v36-2007-08/436179-cause-dreaded-p0011-p0021-codes-everyone-curious-about.html

If this sounds like your Zed, then this thread explains it all, part nos the lot

If your Zed suddenly lost oil pressure, it can

The new gasket is reinforced so hopefully that's the last time I have to do it

Check the gauge and change the oil and filter first

However if you've changed from 6th to 1st at 120mph, your Zed is smoking, rattling, you ran it out of oil or making unnatural noises, I am sorry, it's probably way more serious

This is a big job all the ancillaries the rad and the timing cover must come off, but it's an engine in job and I did it on the drive in Dec!!

It's not a hard job, but two days work if you've not done it before

The bits cost bugger all, about 100quid with oil and filter

My crank bolt was a nightmare

I now have 28psi hot tick over 100 revved

110psi cold tick over, don't rev it cold

No CEL, but this took 100miles of hard driving before it cleared

I now love my Zed, it was eventually a bargain and

I hope this helps someone else

Don't ignore it these things make big oil pressure for a reason

    Thrown rods aren't repairable!

  6. Welcome,

    I'm a new member too

Great cars these, but often suffer from some abuse and penny pinching

I had a variety of tyres on mine when I bought it and it slid all over the place

Fitted 4 new Goodyear Eagle F1s after reading good reviews and it sticks like spit to a blanket now

Make sure you have good oil pressure mine was terrible and took a fair bit to sort out

  7. Hello,

    All seems ok now.

    Without jinxing things

I am shaking her down ready for France now

Oil pressure never drops below 25+psi even after a thrashing and hot, on low idle

It was about 3psi, peaking at 50psi when cold and rev'd

Peaks at 120psi now with just a blip of the throttle

Motor sounds sweet as and the oil is still like golden syrup after about 1000miles

My ECL is staying off, so happy all's well

I am going to do another oil change soon, as I am running Asda synthetic at the moment just to flush everything out.

It's doing the job, but will change to a good branded oil

Any recommendations on oil for the HR engine?

I hear the exhaust VVT can play up even with the correct SAE, but different viscosity?

Next job is a stainless exhaust system, after we get back from France

I live in Dolgarrog, by the way, tiny little place about 6 miles out of Conwy

You could say, "I am the only 350z in the village!!!! :teeth:"

Thanks all for the warm welcomes

  8. I realised about an hour ago the Wales weekend was on.

Typical, but I am planning on keeping the Z for a fair while, at least until I can afford a GTR, so that's not happening soon.

I am sure we'll meet up at a bash.

I am glad you're enjoying yourself here

We have some great roads designed for bikers and Z owners

Watch out for the bill though, very keen on action photography in these parts

  9. Hi

You're right, I did regret buying her quite a few times

The starter motor method was discussed at some lengths in the pub

I can imagine it's not something to be taken lightly

My worry was it might strip the fly wheel as well as maim someone

The way the job was going I really didn''t need that

But it's all been for the best.

    They really are great cars

I even had a gang of young lads ask which Ferrari it was!

It is North Wales after all.

  10. Thanks,

I have to agree with you all.

I certainly open the bonnet with a lot more confidence now

They look worse than they are and not too bad to work on.

Mind you I had to cut the crank bolt to get it off.

2000nm air gun and burning torch wouldn't touch it

Slit the shoulders on the bolt with an angle grinder in the end and it virtually came off by hand

I've never had a crank bolt beat me before.

They must have some big lads in Japan

  11. Hello,

I thought I had better join the family as I have been using all the info you guys give and wish to thank everyone

I have a San Marino Blue 07, 313 roadster, bought last October as a mid life crisis!

I picked her up very cheap from a dealer, with low oil pressure.

My gut feeling was not to touch it, but you know what it's like, I drove her and fell in love.

I swear he knew what he was doing when he sold it me.

Loads of sites said the gauges weren't accurate and that dirty or incorrect oil will do this

Anyway, she ran great and sounded fine, so I took a chance......

A bit of tyre kicking and 500quid off the asking price and she was mine

On the way home ECL came on, but still running fine, so I was guessing it was something pretty minor.

Undertray came loose, hit the road, thank God for fencing wire

To cut a long story short, the oil pressure was terrible, oil changes didn't work

I ended up stripping the timing cover and replacing the paper gaskets on the internal oil way, on the drive in December.

Not a great start to our relationship.

Since then however I have replaced discs and pads all round, all fluids, fitted braided hoses, repaired the undertray and fitted Goodyear F1s all round.

Someone thought unbranded tyres would be a good idea with 300bhp.

It used to drift well I suppose

She now runs great and I am a real Z convert, plus I know far more about the VQ35HR than I should!

I still got a good deal, as I sorted it myself and the bits were cheap enough

God knows what a main dealer would have cost

Thanks for all the threads posted, I'd never have figured out there were internal gaskets that fail without your help

I will be taking the Z to Le Mans in June to support the Nissan LMP1 team.

So fingers crossed for them and me!
