  1. Do cars really lose that much power? I guess it depends on mileage and how well it's been looked after.

Either way, I'm pretty sure the increase in premiums is down to the greater chance of you being a bit of a hooligan if you mod your car. Not always fair, but far from 100% false either..

I would argue that a modder is far from being a hooligan, although there are some out there, I would argue that someone who puts money into a car that doesn't increase its value as we all know to any great degree against an unmodified car of the same make and model, is more likely to drive sensibly more often than a chav in a corsa and I'm not talking about 18 year olds. Piling your hard earned dough and your weekends into making your car unique surely says your gona look after it and not drive like **** !!!!!!

Ok.... I know we get a heavy right foot from time to time, but a modder loves their car a lot more than the "Joe publics". Would be very interesting to have a insurance trade member on here give us all the real honest facts.

  2. Iron Bru I've looked into that. But I work shifts so I'd not be able to go to half the classes :(

That's a bummer mate, I found the course to be really helpful and confidence building. I've just done a few engine mod installs and would never have even thought about doing it myself before doing the night school course.

  3. One for the more enlightened on this subject.......maybe even one of the forum insurance reps / traders.

2005 350Z gt has an officially listed claim of 276 bhp, but as we all know, horses turn to donkeys over the years and after ten years my Z will have lost between 10 and 25 bhp ???? Open to speculation !!!!!.

So..... If my cars bhp performance is a factor in the insuring world..... what happens if I get my car power modded, ie plenum spacer, air intake, remap, sports cats and it is still only 276 bhp after a dyno test ??.

Surely there is an argument from the punter that, I may have modded my car but I have only brought it back to its original bhp so therfore why is my premium increasing ?.

I've just carried out a few mods to the engine bay, polished plenum (Mopedmark), 2006 oem airbox (Flyboy) and polished aluminum air intake pipe and plenum spacer (Torqen), cheers guys, it's not been mapped........yet !!. My car is heavily modded on the body front and my insurance company has told me that as long as there is no bhp increase, my premium won't be affected, just as long as I notify them to all and any mods I do, which is fair enough. But it really sticks in ma craw that even when power modding and not exceeding the official Nissan bhp for my Z, they want to increase my premium.......... how can they explain that one ??

How many members here have done power mods as listed above and still don't get to the original bhp that has such a baring on our insurance prices.

  4. Jay at the moment nothing too crazy but eventually I'd like to maybe supercharge it.

For now it's just basic stuff like fitting an ICE and fitting a sat nac into the top cubby.

But I'd like to know how to do all kinds of things. The more I know the better informed I will be on what can be done.

I went to a night school home mechanics course at the local college, cost was 122 quid for a 12 week course, money well spent

  5. Ah that's a shame. I'm drifting if anybody wants a shot in it lol

I go up to Crail quite regularly mate, but having to work this weekend, would love a passenger ride in your beast :headhurt: , maybe next time your up.

Have you got it back on the road after the crash or are you just using it as a track / drift car ?

Hey man that's cool just come up and say hello next time your up and il take you out :)

I built another z with my original engine in it. The last shell is a bit too far gone to bring it back lol so it's off to the sscrappies as soon as I get the last of the parts off it. What colour z do you have? I've seen a couple up there

I bought Kris's ginger Zed mind

  6. Awesome cars, my brother had an MR FQ 320 VIII and we tested plenty of VI, VII's as well, much enjoyable

You need FSH from Ralliart dealer particularly for the anti yaw unit, and a service every 3K is a killer, Id have bought his from him and would be ripping about in it now otherwise. Get a good one, keep the miles off and youll make money too :)

That's the down side to them, the service intervals, but it wouldn't be seeing 000000's of mile a year from me so that doesn't worry me too much. Yes full service history is a must, and preferably Ralliart.

    Cheers

I owned a VI for three years , bought it very mildly tuned about 340hp and modded and mapped it myself up to 400hp/400ft lbs

Mine was mint and getting nice ones isnt as easy as it was .

Rust is a big issue now , very poor protection from new has meant that serious corrosion especially around the rear end if pretty common

They arent built like Nissans ie build quality but are super capable on the road, I've never driven anything as capable on a back road but they arent such fun on a motorway as cruising speed is about 4000rpm in 5th

They can be fragile and maintenance is more frequent although most capable DIY'er can keep on top of most things and just get a specialist to check it over once a year

They are a rally car on the road and that mustn't be forgotten

I can recommend these guys for servicing and repairs and they often get really nice examples , although Evo's seem more common in Scotland and no doubt there are no shortages of specialists

Lots of info on the MLR here http://www.lancerreg...om/faqindex.php

Thanks Rich, that's gorgeous, like that a lot.

  8. I'm buying another couple of cars to add to the collection next year,

    Bri

Mmmmm, c'mon Bri tell us more 😄. I keep telling the other half I'm not selling a car again, just buying and collecting but she won't have it (neither will the auld bank account 😞)

Lol.... I'm a big fan of v6 / v8 cars, in fact pretty much all the v engines, and especially the Jag V12, a few years ago I bought what I thought at the time a bargain 4x4 Pathfinder for my business from a mate. Little did he or me know at the time it was a very rare (in this country anyway) 3.3 ltr V6 RA 50 model imported from Oz. I put it in for its mot and all it needed was the front shocks replaced. After a while I started doing a bit of digging on it and found it was a model sold in the far east and Australia, was never intended for the European market and as such only a few ever made it over, mine being one of them. It has never let me down and sails through the mot every year with just a brake pipe or bulb, that's all I've ever had to do to her. 1860000 miles on her and she is still sweet as a nut and brilliant in the snow. So that's how I got into cars really, I was a bike nut since 12 yr old and still have a bike.

My Mrs wanted a newer car but it had to be big and 4 x 4 so we went looking and found a Jeep Commander 5.7ltr V8 and bought it straight away. Kind of then I got really into V engines and a year ago I decided to treat myself to a nice coupe (yes that mid life crisis thing), spent a while looking at Zeds, simply because they were v6 and the rest is history. My wife wouldn't let me sell the Pathfinder when we got the Jeep because it costs so little to run and never let's us down. So we won't get rid of any of our cars because we love them, but fancy trying other cars also, hence the thoughts on the evo, Mrs wants the merc Slk, but it has to be the v6 3.5 model, cause she's a poser lol.

My Zed is body modified and I'm doing a few bits to the engine but I'll never through the £££££££ at her to turbo or charge her, but I like cars that are different and not common sights on the road, could never have a mondeo etc, but I want something that's stupidly fast aswell, and the evo, even tho not a v engined car floats my boat. I will eventually get a Jag XJS V12 as well but that's a couple of years away.

  9. Any members got experience of these machines ?.

I'm buying another couple of cars to add to the collection next year, the v6 3.5 Slk for the Mrs and a Evo vi for myself. I don't know anybody that has one and have only spoken to other petrol heads at car shows about them so only know what I have gleaned from the Web and short blethers with owners at shows.

Has any members on here previously / currently own one that can give me proper first hand input on them. Going to buy an already modified one, preferably one around 400 or more bhp.

    Any input appreciated, thanks.

  10. I am fed up driving my 1.2L hyundai i10. The v8 itch needs scratched, been looking at first gen chrysler 300c's the 5.7L hemi engine sounds brilliant with an upgraded exhaust (can't have it too loud though as it will be my daily driver and I work shifts).

What are peoples opinions? I like the styling mostly keep having to look at the front though  the interior is pants but comfy so better than the i10 or my Z. Servicing will be done by myself but expect parts command a premium. Had a quick look at a 300c forum but felt dirty and like I was cheating. Might go test drive one in glasgow soon as the hyundai has a month or two warranty left so would be easier to sell.

I've got a V8 Jeep Commander with the 5.7 hemi engine and a straight through cat back custom made pipe from Pipe Dynamics on it. Growls like a grizzly bear on start up and loud v8 burble when normal driving, stupidly loud on full chat but I love it. Touch wood, never had a problem with it in the near two years I've owned her. Huge comfy mile muncher, bit hard on the wallet though at averaging 17 mpg, but I would buy another. Love it as much as my Zed.

  11. Looking back at the diesel push a few years back, a few government initiatives and suddenly the price of buying a petrol car dropped through the floor and diesel ownership leapt from 1m to 10m overnight.

Think this might change with all the drama with VW and their diesel cars, with more manufacturers looking to be outed !!
