Personally I would be looking at a Renaultsport Clio rather than a Vauxhall. Depending on budget, a couple of grand will get you a great 182 and a bit more will get you a 182 full fat. Just don't get the 182 cup as it's a wate of money. The 172 cup is awesome but very raw. I'm considering a 182 as a daily/ track slag so plenty about.mif you really want to save money then you could get a 172 also.

As an alternative but a bit more, how about a Pug 207 GTi. A fair bit dearer, but 1.6 turbo so very economical, lower tax and a bit softer and nicer to be.

What about a Trabant?

I did look for you when looking for the Sccoby but couldn't find one. I suspect it would have a name like

"big black boring box that ruins the view out of my window at work" or maybe "big fat arse driven by a complete nut case" but I suspect a better name would be "should had bought a land rover"

Possibly I didn't give it enough of a chance but I just couldn't get on with it. I was expecting the 2.0 in that chassis to feel pretty Damn fast but it just didn't. I just thought the DC2 had it beaten in every area, felt like an event to drive that. I think that bar stool driving position just wound me up from the start and the gear stick throw was too long but I suppose felt ok in a french way. I just don't think it was for me, though their popularity can't be denied!

Compared to the DC2 then yes it would feel a bit sedate. The DC2 is very raw and very driver focused, some even say one of the best FWD cars ever made so the Clio would been on a back foot. I went from a Clio 172 to an EP3 and despite the EP3 being wonderful and setup for track, it felt dull and soulless. Great on track but very bland. I missed the feedback and engagement I had with the Clio. I've now moved to a DC5 and it is incredible. Totally chalk and cheese compared to the EP3.

I still wouldn't buy one as my fun car, but that doesn't make them anything other than brilliant.

 

I bought a Clio 182 Trophy, supposedly the best hot clio. I sold it after 2 weeks. The driving position was terrible, seats weren't very supportive, the engine had no torque and the top of the Rev range didn't have enough bite to make up for this. Gear change was crap and it sounded like a fart. I really dont understand the fuss, it gave me no feeling that I was in a proper performance car at all.

 

That's very surprising although I don't think 2 weeks is really giving it much of a chance. Really surprised at some of your comments. I loved how you got the surge of power mid rev band as the cams change and mine just kept pulling. The gearbox I thought was great and probably nicer than the Civic EP3. I get the driving position comment though and I think you will find it hard to find any 172/182 owner who wouldn't agree with you

5.8 0 to 60 and 155mph, not sure i would class that as pretty average in the grand scheme of things,

You guys should try driving a few normal cars and wannabe hot hatches to find out just how quick a zed actually is.

That's the problem though, reading the figures of paper do not give you the truth about how a car drives. Let's take an old Ford Fiesta, stick a big engine and turbo in it and now that does 0 - 60 in 5 seconds and 150mph. Would you then be happy to say this is not average any longer?

As has already been pointed out, much slower cars on paper like the Renaultsport Clio's and MX5's can be far more involving and rewarding to drive. Take a Lotus Elise, 0 - 60 in 5.5 and only a top speed of 120mph. You won't find a car much better for handling and driver focused for the money. It's not all about the figures on paper to decide how good a car is.

Tell them you can not train them as at least one is disabled

I used to be the most staunch anti-FWD bastard out there, the cars listed and a few more have totally changed my view of that ........... and Im a drifter as well.

 

"Fun" is in no way related to anything other than "fun", one of my best mates has an Exige but youll never see him smiling more than when hes caning his £150 1.1 Pug 106 "Zest" around trying to stay within 2mph of its top speed

Just to add, I love understeer with a passion. I also love driving in the wet. Turning in early, letting a car understeer in to the apex and playing with the throttle trying to balance grip and wheel spin is just the most incredible feeling in the world.

As you say, doesn't need to be a quick car to make it fun. As Jackie Stewart once said, if a corner can only be taken at around 60mph and you have the slowest car, then you won't make time up in the straights but if you can take the corners faster than anyone else, then that's where you need to put your focus to make time up. I guess this is very true for the MX5 as it destroys much faster cars in the twisties but loses out big time on the straights.

You can't get this much fun out of a FWD hot-hatch.

 

Literally two posts before yours you have someone talking about preconceptions and how wrong they can be. Drive a sorted Clio 182 Cup, a Megane RS and a GTI-6 and come back and tell me that.

 

The fact you can buy two of those cars for the price of a decent set of tyres for the Zed also says something

I avoided added my reply as I didn't want to open a can of worms. However, I have been very fortunate to have owned and still have to drive a 4WD 300bhp Scooby, Lotus Elise S1, Integra Type R DC5, MX5 Mk1, Clio 172, track prep Civic Type R EP3. The car that is the most fun, enjoyable and gave the most feedback is the Clio 172. It handled amazing and feedback through the chassis and steering was sublime. The whole RWD is better than FWD argument is utter crap. You just need to know how to drive a FWD properly.

The above is not aimed at anyone in particular, just an opinion on some of the comments. Personally, I prefer FWD but I know thats a minority.

I live in the area and see the display all the time. They fly over my house when they do the displays, its amazing. Used to go with my dad all the time.

One from today.

Don't go into a bulk storage area without putting the lights on because when the wind blows the door shut, you can't see where you are going and can be stuck in there for a little while whilst trying to find the door again and avoid tripping over things. I guess it made things interesting.

Another one from today.

Don't try and pay for your food which is £2 by giving the girl a 2p and then attempt to convince her that it was once a £2 coin and you have no idea why it has changed into a 2p piece. Not only do you come across a bit of a fruit cake, you will also have to endure funny looks from her the next time you buy food.

Finally from today and its only reached lunch.

Don't touch your face with your fingers after attempting to fix the ink pad of a date stamp as you will look rather silly with black ink on your face as Kraziekatz1 pointed out to me today. Then, if you do decide to repair it again and for a third time, remember to wash your hand like you didn't do the first time as you will keep on looking stupid with black ink on your face.

 

Always check the catch on your loft ladder before pulling it down otherwise the telescopic bit comes flying down, cracks you in the skull and knocks you out cold.

I read it as why would you be playing a banjo whilst having sex and put it down to some kind of kinky sex thing. Still, I guess it's nothing compared to some of the weird and kinky things we've all done over the years with different objects right or is that just me?

I think it's to do with people being ill informed, believing all they read and peer pressure. I was listening to a group of people the other day discussing second hand cars and they came to the conclusion that you can't buy a decent second hand car for less than £11k. I nearly burst out laughing. My Elise is £8k, my MX5 was £650 and my DC5 was £6k. You could get an amazing 350z for £6k and an out of this world one for £11k. Saying that, they all seemed to be obsessed with owning either an Audi or BMW and were competing against who has the best.

I mentioned to my nephew who is a bit car mad that I was thinking about a 350z and he said, oh pretty slow and unreliable?? This is all based on what he read. Just crazy. He also had an amazing Evo 6 but sold it for a BMW as all his mates have them. So sad.

I was told never by a Scooby as they eat tyres, drink fuel and blow up. I've had my Scooby WRX 5 year, done 40k miles, 3 sets of tyres, get 27 mpg and has been bullit proof.

I was told never buy an Elise as they are so unreliable as hell. Well, 8 years later and various track days, it's still going strong.

It's all just rubbish. If you like the car, then that's all that matters.
