What external light source did you use to light up the Zed?

Jack the back end up, and rock the wheel from side to side to see if you can feel any play in the bearing. Spin it too, while you are there, and listen for any strange noises.

If they perch on the top of the fence before hopping over, try extending the height of the chicken wire above the posts so that its all floppy. The instability should throw them off.

Our chickens are surrounded by ordinary stock fence but I covered it in bird net to stop them getting through the gaps. However, some of them squeeze through underneath, and get into the adjoining field. No probs there, as its ours anyway. They tend not to stray too far. ^ What Zedd said His is on a DE while mine is on an HR. Both on standard cats. He reckons mine is slightly louder. Cant fault it, no booming or droning, just a great sound, especially when you drop a gear.
