Just for the record, "gotten" is not an Americanism. In the states they speak an older form of English compared to us Brits who speak a more evolved form. The "ten" from gotten is just how is used to be, we've just dropped it off the past participle. Wow, that's interesting, I also naturally assumed it was one of those horrible Americanisms.
