The MAF is delicate, be careful removing and installing and clean using the appropriate process. I'm sure there's a guide on here. FWIW I don't think it will solve the smell of I burnt fuel but it won't hurt, if done correctly.

I looked into this a little while ago, to get a vq in an mx5 you would need to make some extensive modifications to the height of the engine by either dry-sumping or re-designing the plenum.
Seems high tech. What about sawing a big hole in the bonnet?
