  4. I was looking at getting a 996 basically because they are a cheap porka. When i looked into it i found out the reasons why which have already been mentioned on here. (toyota showed them how to do mass production to save the company) My eldest said why worry just buy it, run it for a while and then sell it. Thing is i usually buy and plan to keep for a long time so didn`t feel like i wanted to do that hence i felt i wanted to have something i could enjoy and not worry about. The deciding factor was a report i read on the net where an owner said ` its like driving along with a live hand grenade behind you and you never know when its going to go off` I think the honest answer for me was i could afford to buy one but not afford to fix it if it went bang so stayed clear. Each to their own just ask yourself if you can sleep at night dreaming about. IMS bearings, porus blocks and cracked cylinder liners. The failure rate is meant to be about 5% which in production terms is huge..........be careful.

  11. http://auto.howstuff...50z-design2.htm http://auto.howstuff...50z-design3.htm Worth a read before you convince yourself the standard setup is completely useless. Most changes people make are because they want to drop the car to improve its looks and after spending money normally convince themselves it handles better where in truth they may just swap one compromise for another. Theres a big difference between spending 2k on a suspension set up and £150 on a set of springs. By all means go ahead and do the mods you want but just be aware that nissan spend a lot of money on R and D to suit the car and all road conditions not just one route that a change may appear to improve the handling on. This is why insurance companys want to know about mods you do as very many of them may actually compromise the performance of the car and make it worse.

  18. I mention oil filters as some have a non return valve which stops all the oil draining back to the sump. It holds some in the oil ways ready for when you first start up and the pressure builds getting it to where it should be quicker. Often a problem with astras etc. Cheap filter and you can here the top rattle when you start up before the pressure buiilds. Get a genuine filter and the problems not there. The real answer for failure has to be the way the engines have not been looked after and not treated well due to poor serviceing, cheap parts and fluids. Yet again decent service history and mechanical empathy from the owners will give you longevity.
