An Idiots guide to car mechanics by an Idiot
Tinyflier replied to Fisherking's topic in 350Z General
As a founder member of the "Ambition exceeds Ability" club I empathise, sympathise and PMSL at your exploits. David -
Easy enough job to remove it, sand it down, plastic primer and then suitable top coat (I used Halfords matt black which comes out as a very close to OEM satin finish). I did contemplate Plastidip but didn't like the textured end result having used it to paint my rear strut cover (as per pic on the left). David

That is the funniest vidclip I have watched for ages! David -
A Wooly Mammoth is my preferred drying towel. Simply lay it on the panel and let it soak up the moisture. I use a sealant rather than wax as it shrugs water off more effectively IMHO - as one person has said check out Detailing World. David

Mine does the same and it is the main reason why these cars never seem particularily quick through the lower gears (even after an Uprev and Miltek and Berks HFCs). David

Nurburgring - April/May/June 2013?
Tinyflier replied to RS8055's topic in European Meets, Road Trips & Rallies
As I was told that any insurance cover can't be had there seemed little point in wasting my breath to say anything more. -
OK I must be losing the plot...! A while ago I bought silvered indicator bulbs for the front of my '06 facelift and last night taking advantage of getting home early decided to "pop them in". Fail #1: I didn't realise each front lamp assembly needed TWO bulbs! Fail #2: Linked to fail#1 I managed (just!) to ease the lamp assembly forward a gnat's whisker and unfasten the bulb holder but I couldn't manouver the bulb holder out although I did manage to pull the topmost bulb out. Fail #3: My indicator bulb appears to have a flatened end and not what I was expecting/bought ie a bayonet fitting. Having read threads here on bulbs I am totally confused as to what I need to replace my orange bulbs with silvered ones. I've checked the Autobulbs website but they only show bayonet fitting indicator bulbs. Am I going mad? Did I imagine that mine are flattened? Anyways I managed to get the pesk holder refitted and all lights are working OK but am stumped about replacements! David

Insurance can cover whatever you want it to cover if you are prepared to pay the premium. You can have cover for damages caused to 3rd party property and personal injury. As for not being liable if not negligent - good luck in taking that approach and trying to defend any action taken against you should you eg drop oil or water and cause a following biker to crash on the fluid. Is that negligence? Doubt it - could just be a mechanical failure - but you would still be liable and into a wordl of financial pain. Of course insurance is not obligatory all I was giving was my opinion and I defend to the death the right of others to give theirs too! David -

Strongly recommend that you DO take out insurance cover. You need to factor in not only repair or write off costs to your car BUT if you have an accident and are held to blame you could be liable for circuit repair costs (ARMCO barrier replacement) PLUS if someone has an accident as a result of any indiscretion on your part you could be liable for their repair costs PLUS any personal injury caused! I've driven and raced at the 'Ring for many years and for a newcomer it can be intimidatingly daunting. more of a worry is it can be beguilingly seductive to think you know the place after a few laps. There are many MANY parts of the circuit that at first sight are easily mistaken for others. I had a mahoosive accident at Wehrseifen one year through a moment's inattention as it looks so much like the entry point to Breidscheid - well trust me it ISNT! The entry speed and apex speed are very different! Luckily I only damaged my car, and my pride, but had I taken someone else out then my wallet would have been much lighter! I wouldn't dream of taking part in an open day there without insurance - thos accidents you see on YouTube are salutroy lessons for us all. Having said that the adrenalin rush and fun factor are enormous and addictive! David -
These "bars" on the facelift are actually screw on body coloured caps. You can get to the fixing screws from behind either by removing the bumper or you can get your hand down from the top through the big gap where the bonnet catch is. Once you remove those caps you will be left with some pretty ugly slats but if you are covering with black mesh you won't see them (or you can dremel them off I guess). There are some pics on my build thread that show before, during and after (although I mounted a Zunsport grille - which I realsie you don't like - but the principle is similar). David

As a reference point the supplied, colour coded and fitted price for mine was £165. Sensors were from Steelmate (this is the second car I've used Steelmate on without any issues) and fitting took around an hour by my local stereo installer. No visual monitor - audible beeper only mounted in the inner face of the rear of the boot.
-
Yes you can, my local car stereo retailer supplied, sprayed and fitted the sensors to match my gun metal Zed (and have done same on some of my previous cars too). As standard parking sensors are generally black plastic and they are then painted to body colour. BUT, and I am wandering now into pure speculation, it MAY be that you have to take them apart to paint. Reason I said that is most (possibly all) parking sensors I've seen look to be made up of an inner cylinder and an outer shell and I don't know if they are/can be sprayed as a single item. Am sure your parking aid/sensor retailer will advise you on the procedure. David

Thanks guys - will check these all out. KnightRacer have a very good reputation on the GTR owners club site - so I have a leaning towards their product. David

Who was your supplier? Appreciate a pic - thank you. David

I had some left over from a previous other car project where I did the same and then simply sourced a few from my local hardware store. Mine are just simple stainless bolts and washers not the fancy anodised ones - although if I was able to get a set of those I'd probably go for them. David -
Be interested to hear from anyone who has fitted sidesteps and if possible see some pics. So far have found some from Aerokit and KnightRacer but their images aren't overly sharp. Am thinking of plain black (either "natural gel coat finish or CF) - not sure I want them body coloured. David

Good work on the engine bay - I spent most of last Saturday giving mine a quick clean up. Am part way through replacing the visible bolts and screws with stainless items now - much to the amusement of my fellow apartment block dwellers. Still lots to do (before I bring out the machine polisher). David -
Am in total awe about your wrapping skills Ian! David

ooo that's clever - my tyres aren't WiFi enabled...

I use a micro fibre mit and find I can get enough of my hand and arm in between the spokes to clean the inside of the rim right to the edge. Also means I can clean the inner face of the spokes! David

Hmm - I see what you mean - that looks nothing like my cargo net. Mine runs virtually in a straight line between the mounting points and is actually "double skinned" so you get a kind of pocket effect. David -

Nice day for a few mods... Update: Page 4 (14/05/2014)

I would have thought so? I can't confirm though obviously! On the facelift you have to remove the body coloured slats that are in the grille aperture before you can fit the Zunnsport grille. These slats are screwed on from behind. You can get to them by putting you arm (equipped withn a screwdriver!) down from the top through the gap in front of the radiator. Fitting the grille after is a piece of cake. David -
Try Steve at Redline Styling on the Traders forum. http://www.350z-uk.c...user-group-buy/ I don't think his group buy went ahead as there weren't enough particpants but maybe he could get one for you. David
