Rocker cover grommets - no need to replace entire RC
cs2000 replied to RobPhoboS's topic in 350Z Technical
Yep, just seen that at around 27 mins, thanks Do you really have to disconnect all the things he had disconnected? Seems like he does a lot of extra work. Its fine if so, just trying to judge times, and whether I would benefit from an assistant -
Rocker cover grommets - no need to replace entire RC

I have skimmed the manual before but want to check something. The RTV gasket, I know you have to put them round the new grommets to seal them, but you don't apply it anywhere else do you? Surely the cam covers rubber gasket in the kit is enough to seal that? The RTV gasket should be left for 24 hours shouldn't it, not 40 mins? Top job anyway mate, im really hoping to get mine done this weekend. Ive bought some orange masking tape to stick on anything I remove (pipe, connector,tubing-wise) so I make sure to plug them all back in! -

Thanks for this. Hopefully I won't need it but nice to know it's there (although the one in the video looks plastic to me, so I don't think we've got an inferior tool) Naa, don't think we do, just fancied re-making one, just-in-case, and also im trying to learn 3d modelling as im building 1 3d printer and buying another, gotta start simple with two tubes basically! lol -
Don't know if the car is susceptible to it as I've done this too. Had a similar feeling in the clutch too but they share the same fluid don't they? Brake didn't smell, just the pedal was very very soft and clutch gave no resistance at all to being depressed.

Probably just pinched the replacement gasket. Or don't have to put RVT there fo you? Hope that's all it is anyway. Lots of people pinch the plenum gasket when installing a spacer so I guess it's an easy thing to do -

Just from the rocker cover, or out of the spark plug hole? If it's just the rocker you may have just pinched the gasket so it's not sealing properly?? -
Thanks Chris, yep I've seen those videos but not sure I like the idea of doing it. Cutting the hole and fixing the new seals accurately looks to be a bit hitty miss to me and may give even more problems. Sly at Kaiser Motors has said he would be willing to fit the kits if you wanted the job done. I have also only ever seen it affect the rear two plugs, that's exactly where the fault is with mine :)Kit is in hand, hopefully fit it next week.

As we have already established. Its either the antenna to a tracker, possibly an RAC trackstar, or the antenna for the phone cradle. Remember, we now all have Bluetooth in there, but you can get phone adaptors that fit in there too where the phone docks into the car itself. Older nokias used to have an external antenna port for this purpose. If you take the plastic off you can clearly see its an antenna of some sort.

Well done Rob, looking forward too it. Let us know the total job time length! As promised (and Adrian, feel free to steal it) I have recreated the alignment tool in a 3d model so if anybody wants another for some reason, or theirs breaks, you can send the STL file to a 3d printing company, or use your own 3d printer and get one re-made. http://cs2000.cronus.feralhosting.com/Alignment-tool.stl Not tested printing personally, but should be fine as its a simple model & I took the sizes myself using some digital callipers. -
Oh, I know what im doing. I'm an IT network engineer by trade which believe me is a million times more complex than a simple wiring loom. I have installed several sound systems into cars (back in the day when such things were cool) with proper wiring and correct termination blocks. Installed multiple stereos, some with and some without wiring harness adaptors after previous owners totally butchered the loom which I fixed, done numerous LED jobs including foot well, external door handle, interior vent and under body lighting. On the zed alone I have added a CCTV system with ignition detection and due to how its wired will record for a while after engine switch off, tracker systems (GPS and triangulation using the GSM network), in car charging by extending and modifying the cig lighter circuit to make it all look OEM,BOSE AUX mod, plus handed out plenty of electrical advice on here regarding the addition of DRL's and other things such as LED's which I both offered for sale and made for about 8 months, and I could go on. FYI it was a simple case of holding a few wires, leant to get some insulation tape and dropped the wire which shorted them and blew the dimming lights feature on my Celica as its controlled by the BCM module.

Yeah, doing it one way is indeed odd. Check the condition of all the rubber bushings in the steering/suspension setup. Droplinks and the like.

I know that, was just stating the obvious. The real issue is its easy to cause a short circuit which will do the same thing. Believe me its far too easy to do, ive done it on another car and other members have done it on here.

Rocker cover grommets - no need to replace entire RC

Yes mate received today (had to collect from PO). Need to get hold of that gasket stuff before I can give it a shot. Did the 3d printed alignment tool come in the package or is it something you guys had made up? As the one on the video is metal. I'm going to recreate it in my 3d software tonight so I can print replacements if needed. -
Power steering fluid? The system can make some weird creaking noises when you get towards full lock if the fluid is low.

If your down Kent direction kaiser motor(sly) has indicated he will fit the kit if you supply. A rough guess but with correct tools and previous engine knowledge it's probably only a 4 hr job. However you need to allow 24hrs for the silicon gasket to set. -

Il have to check my torque wrench. I have 2 sizes and am hoping the small and medium ones will be sufficient. Think I may already have a hole saw too to be fair. -
Good to know it's still in 1 piece I guess. Must be plenty of ANPR camera round that way so they should be able to find it if it stays local.

Really?!? By who, untrained baboons working at Kwik Fit? I understand those times are conservative as they have to account for someone at Kwik Fit levels or a Nissan Master Mechanic like Sly, but seems OTT still. @OP - Good news in the end, bill wasn't that bad

Cheers Rob, will buy that now I plan on doing this next weekend (not the one coming up) all going well -
The 370 is beautifull, just doesn't look as aggressive as the 350, which in its own way is starting to look a little dated. Obviously in Nismo guise the '70 looks better, but generally I think the 350 tops it. Was considering swapping a few months ago and that was the general consensus of the guys at my work anyway.

They probably unnecessarily removed the exhaust and cats etc. Name and shame to save other forum members similar pain. ~ I done my cats and exhaust in about half hour lol. still not 9 hours worth! Could run into may extra hours if they snapped the cat bolts and studs. Perhaps they had to do it twice if car would not start after fitting the fly incorrectly. Alex. I agree, sounds like they had an issue and were stumped... Sky removed large sections of the exhaust aswell as the driveshaft and all other sorts of bits! I was horrified when I first saw it lol but I guess it just makes the job easier in terms of access. Sounds like as Alex said they had a dud part, fitted it incorrectly and snapped every bolt when fitting it. As above, name and shame!
-
Yeah, had mine done twice now by Slay down at Kaizer Motor, first time think was 220 and second was 180 (had slave cylinder changed first time, not the second) Took around 2hrs each time, probably less the second time. 9 Hrs. is ludicrous, they need to explain themselves.
-
Again, on my rear brace I have a GSM antenna, part of the tracker system... Car wasn't fitted with sat nav. I have seen this little box on other cars too and am beginning to wonder if Nissan did a deal with RAC to offer trackers at point of sale.

Just be carefull ! Disconnect the battery and don't over-do the LED's. If you overload that circuit which is easy to do, you will fry part of your BCM which is bad news. Would be better advised to use the 12v cig lighter power with a relay connected to the courtesy light circuit to do the switching on and off.
