I take it you're on wheel horsepower there? Because over 300BHP is easily achievable on the 276. DB

High Oil Consumption - Ballpark Repair Costs Pleas
DannyBoy replied to Posidrive's topic in 350Z General
Your oil pressures are still within limits you realise? in fact they're higher than mine, but then mine's full of 5W30, so you'd expect a lower pressure with a lighter oil. Could the lack of smoke when warm be to do with the cats hiding it when they're up to temp? Whatever it is i hope you find a solution. DB -
Turbo engines with aftermarket ECUs and/or boost controllers are 1000x more like to detonate than a non-turbo running conservative factory maps. Actually, turbo engines with aftermarket ECU's generally dont have a problem as said ECU has been mapped for that specific engine and level of boost, its more likely to be a change in spec on a car running standard ECIU and standard ignition. You obviously have far more experience than me here, as Ive found its too little fuel that causes knocking, and that one instance lasting 2 seconds is more than enough to cause damage to the pistons or big ends. Too much fuel can only really cause damage through hydraulic lock but you know that, right? This is my understanding too, the leaner the mixture, the better bang you get but the more risk of knock you accept. That's why you can run leaner on higher octane, because it's more resistant to being 'squeezed' before it goes bang without spark. I could be totally wrong, but I don't think docwra is as well. DB

Bad luck mate, that's really gotta suck I think the lack of response is probably a combination of 'please help' (which turns up a lot and is usually something stupid/boring) and the fact that Zmanalex and R35LEE have already been recommended to you, and they really are the best place to start. The only other sensible suggestion I can make is ebay, DE engines do seem to pop up reasonably regularly but you might struggle to find a rev-up. Good luck DB

450 is a top-end figure, but the GTM kit uses a big Rotrex supercharger that has far more potential than the vortec or particularly the HKS (which is also a Rotrex blower, just a lot smaller), so could easily get there if you wanted. In fairness, SCs are more reliable than TT kits on the whole, but there's 'catastrophic failure' unreliable and then there's 'not running quite right' unreliable, and while the latter isn't as bad, it must still be bloody annoying having spent so much cash. Most serious failures on SCs seem to come when someone wished they'd bought turbos and go power chasing, where they end up with a highly-strung setup with everything pushed right to the limit. Re-reading my first post it sounds like i'm having a big downer on the idea, and i'm not, it's just that anything you do is going to make the car more fragile, so you'd never really be able to just bolt it on and treat it like stock, but it sounds like you've had previous experience so you'll know that already. DB

To my knowledge the only supercharger kit available for the HR engine is the GTM rotrex kit. It's awesome, and very well put together, but consequently very expensive compared to a vortec. You also have to get it shipped from the states so you'll get raped on import taxes. Go to the US forums and have a read up. If you think there's really such a thing as 'drive in drive out' then I think you need to read some first-hand experiences of how it can all go wrong. You're adding a lot of power to a car which wasn't designed for it, so you at least need to have extra funds standing by just in case and seriously think about whether you can deal with the potential decreased reliability. Re: supporting mods, do you really want 300bhp worth of brakes and tires on a 450bhp car? DB

Also bear in mind it may not actually be the seals. My coupe currently has a leaking/whistling driver's window which is actually down to a knackered hinge letting the door sit too low. It's evident by the fact that the door catches slightly on the latch when closing, and you can actually see the play in the hinge if you get someone else to lift the door whilst looking at the hinge. Worth checking before battling with Nissan for the wrong thing, the fact that it's a soft-top could be a red herring. DB

There is a thread on here somewhere. but google it and you'll find a diagram. You just have to pull out the gear surround part of the console (literally, it pulls out), then get yourself two sets of molegrips (one to hold the lever in place and one to twist the knob off) and you're all good. DB

Haha must be a SPECIAL Remap that nobody knows about lol Seem to be a lot of those around lately viewtopic.php?f=41&t=61615 As above really; personally I'd be more concerned about the optimistic power figures than the mileage, especially with that price for a UK car. DB

Not ebay, but DE+exhaust+induction=400hp....
DannyBoy replied to daveparkin's topic in Spotted on Ebay or Other
Assuming that's not just more lies. You know: 'I bought it for 15,000 2 years ago so you're getting an awesome deal.' DB -

This sort of thing really gets under my skin I know it's not my problem, but the thought that some unwitting enthusiast might actually hand over £4k more than it's worth because of his blatant lies really does bother me. In fact just for that I hope that a Chinese satellite lands on the car and destroys it before he can sell it DB -
when you say window sill, do you mean the top of the window? Mine does this at the moment and in my case it's actually nothing to do with the window, it's a knackered door hinge. It causes the window to sit slightly too low which allows the air pressure to suck it away from the top seal at 65mph+. This makes it whistle, and also leak So yea, before ripping your door apart to get at the window mechanism, just check the hinges for any play, could save yourself some hassle. DB

I think I must just be at a lower state of consciousness than the rest of the world, because I really really can't see why you'd buy some orange wallpaper instead of (for example) a car collection to rival Jay Leno's. DB

There's no such thing as road tax, and hasn't been for decades. It's VED, or Vehicle Excise Duty. So I'm afraid it's car tax rather than road tax. Saying that i'm fairly sure they'll rename it the 'based-on-the-unconvincing-and-incomplete-theory-that-man-made-carbon-dioxide-emissions-cause-global-warming tax', as that's more or less what it is. DB

I have a similar sort of thing caused by a leaking cam cover. The spark plug wells very slowly fill with a small amount of oil which then cooks off under enthusiastic driving. It's more of a hot oil smell than a burning smell though. Leaking cam covers aren't exactly common but are a known issue so might be worth checking, although IIRC you had your plugs changed recently didn't you so I guess it would have been spotted then DB

Kestrel DAS-6 give it a google, loads of places sell them should be around £75 and does everything you'd expect a DA to do DB
-
May be the timing chain tensioners. Not sure about the Zed but i know they're controlled by the oil pressure on some engines, which would explain why it only happens on cold first starts when there's no oil circulating. DB
-
Think that's a bit harsh, a reasonable mileage good-nick UK GT from a dealer should fetch at least £7K even these days. DB
-
Unsprung weight (the weight of everything that is not supported by the suspension, mainly the wheels and brake assembly) is much more sensitive to small differences that sprung weight. loosing a bit of weight from the body of the car won't make a vast difference, but loosing even half a kilo from each corner will make a very noticable difference. RAYS are just about the lightest wheels you can get for the Zed without spending silly money, so they're a good way to make the car feel more nimble. DB

I can't think of any fluids in the car that have both the consistency and colour of water. Everything is thick or oily except for the coolant, and that's bright green. So basically if it looks like water and feels like water, then it's probably water and you're alright. DB

To buy or not to buy 350z?
DannyBoy replied to SirAndyCapp's topic in Introductions & Welcome Messages
Quite a few posts recently about this, a quick scroll through the 'view new posts' section should turn up a few similar threads. Also buyers guide and more info here: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=23843 Basically for £5500 you'll be looking at a low spec import with reasonable mileage, or possibly a non-GT pack UK car with galactic mileage. You basically won't find a factory Nismo car in your budget. DB -
The true Nismo variants are extremely rare, but in Japan you could specify a lot of Nismo goodies (cosmetic and performance) individually from the factory, not just the body kit. Occasionally JDM cars with wierd specs claiming to be Nismo cars show up and these are usually the latter; just a regular car with some factory Nismo toys added. DB

From memory: seats - yes, cruise control - no DB

I'd be wanting to go over the history with a fine tooth comb to try and verify the work that the guy says has been done to it. Very easy to claim it has 'racing cams' (which by the way will do very little without headers) because how do you check? I'd be wanting a dyno print-out from the Abbey remap as well, as the bhp/tq should be some indicator of what has actually been done to it. Best of luck with the search DB
