  1. Well the story goes that the old engine was down on compression on 2 cylinders - this was diagnosed as burnt or badly seating zorst valves. The engine was removed and the heads refurbished by an engineering company (I think there are receipts for this) The heads went back to the original owner but they had a change in circumstances and sold the shell, mods and engine (after being rebuilt) separately to get rid of it quickly. That is the story as far as I know it anyway - the engine was bought privately and "as seen" so no come backs and the head work was not done for the current owner and we don't know that there is anything wrong with that work anyway. The engine fired first time and was run on a 70 odd mile round trip daily for the next 2 weeks. The car it now sits in has no history of overheating but the reason for replacing the engine to start with was a spun bearing. We are replacing the rad and shroud this time round anyway. I do hope to strip the current engine after it is removed just to see if we can find out what actually went wrong.
  2. To be honest it looks like the weather has put us 2 months behind on the house refurb, so please try and get bits elsewhere if you cant wait. Sorry to disappoint
  3. I doubt this was caused by overheating more this caused overheating, we changed the engine and the Zed ran for 2 weeks as a daily with no problems, no overheating. Then it started overheating and we found a small amount of air in the system so assumed an airlock - we bled the system and the problem was fine for about 1 or 2 days. We thought possible thermostat sticking so we removed it - fine for a week. We got a known working thermostat and put that in - instant overheat - again thought air lock and spent ages bleeding and trying to sort it out but with the thermostat in it would overheat. At this point we were baffled Then it started to overheat with the thermostat out spent some time on it on Saturday and ran the block test which read positive for zorst gasses in the coolant system - blown head gasket is most likely or possibly worse - split ,liner crack in head etc. It does now however have all the signs of a blown head gasket that is getting worse. Next stop - engine out again probably this weekend. I'm going to speculate that when the engine was rebuilt a non standard head gasket was used and has now failed but we won't know the full extent of the failure until the engine is stripped down - watch this space. Still hope to have him back on the road next week though
  4. I agree, it's one failing thing we haven't heard very much about at all, Zmanalex also confirmed that they are not known to fail very often at all. This engine has a complicated but mostly unknown (to us) history. I was 98% sure it wasn't head gasket but this seems to say otherwise - we need to decide on the next step now. I'm sure we will have more info in the next few weeks.
  5. O it's OK I'm sure you "know what you are doing"
  6. No that is another Zed completely
  7. Bournemouth mate - always welcome to drop in (bring doughnuts ) @Dblock - it works by drawing vapour from the colant system through a chemical liquid that changes colour if hydrocarbons are present - I didn't get this one but the bay sells em basically this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BLOCK-TESTER-UNIVERSAL-CYLINDER-HEAD-COMBUSTION-LEAK-GASKET-DAMAGE-TEST-/290937720560?_trksid=p2054897.l4276
  8. We had quite a gathering here today - First up was ddcboyle His Zed was in for - a banana arm While stripping we found a poorly looking stud - so that came out soon had him all sorted - also replaced his N/S CAT as the old one was not doing the job any more. By now the Zed Shed was filling up!! Some looked worried ???? some just ate cakes We had plenty As was the garden and road New Zed Shed mascot Then we ran a test on the car that keeps getting air locks If the dye turn yellow you have a blown head gasket O dear But all in all a good day with lots of fun and banter and a total of 9 350z's at one point
  9. The water pumps driven by the same chain that drives the cams (via 2 more chains) the front is a cog then behind that on the other side of a plate is an impeller if that wasn't spinning you would over heat very quickly and if it was damaged you would probably here it. The air lock can stop the water circulating therefore overheating occurs. You could also have a stuck thermostat or a dodgy rad cap. A stuck thermostat means poor or no circulation a bad rad cap means the water boils off quicker but then you would notice a loss of fluid after the car cools.
  10. Get him sorted for me then - only been waiting 6 months for them
  11. Yer poor old RT do all the work and get none of the credit!!!
  12. Can I have that mech's number - he is good I have never seen anyone squeeze a pipe open a rad cap and diagnose both head gaskets blown without any further testing!! We could do with skills like that to call upon! or he is a numpty and you should ignore his diagnosis and go somewhere that actually run a few tests to prove their fault diagnosis!
  13. Did mine - I think it looks Good
  14. Welcome from another very young owner
