  1. Its true if you look at sales of 3 series there has been a huge slide in sales since 2014. The error is to look at two variables (BMW 3 series sales vs Model 3) and assume one is linked to the other because they correlate. This is where 99% of the population who do not understand the difference between correlation and causality often fall over with conclusions. You cannot predict causality with such a basic view of the landscape, I am pretty sure electric tech blogs/websites will be shouting this headline about finishing off the 3 series but based on facts, they cannot prove it and are most likely completely incorrect in their conclusions. What underlying theme that is really happening in the US for German marques is that families are trading across platforms from 'sedans' to SUVs and often staying within brand. I am sure I read somewhere at the back end of last year that in the US BMW brand sales are up year on year (cant be bother to source that). What is more interesting is looking at the landscape to see Prius sales collapsing at the same time, it would be interesting to dig out some data that shows there could be a simple switch from different forms of hybrid into full electric, certainly in my mind that would make more sense.
  2. That M3 in South Africa plowed through the central reservation, how it didnt hit anything coming the other way and kill anyone is a miracle. But yes, the obvious is obvious, having an issue at a higher speed is going to mean a much higher chance of injury/death than having similar issue at lower speeds. Allowing the general public to decide what speed is appropriate for a road is a recipe for disaster (remember how stupid the general public en-mass can be) so the only solution is sensible speed limits on roads.
  3. Just checking via Vehicle Smart app a few cars and a pop up appeared on the app saying that until 6th March use the code VS50 on euro car parts for 50% off all engine oil purchases. Havent checked it works but feel free to have a go.
  4. kick the can down the road phrase of kick INFORMAL•US put off confronting a difficult issue or making an important decision, typically on a continuing basis. "I appreciate that he doesn't want to raise taxes, but sooner or later you have to stop kicking the can down the road"
  5. SOLD https://youtu.be/z2QOtsYtpeY
  6. (Scottish to English Translation) braw Dictionary result for braw /brɔː/ adjective SCOTTISH fine, good, or pleasing. "it was a braw day"
  7. Indeed. I remember on here someone saying how they got into their mates S-Line Audi and how noticeably faster it was (based on being told that by their mate) than the non S-Line version. If you are conditioned to it, you believe it, even feel it.
  8. My father has been a mechanic (used to work on etypes etc and once worked on an XJ220) for 53 years my brother a relative novice at just 23 years working on cars...never had a problem with supermarket fuels causing issues. That's the problem with anecdotal evidence, it's not a proper test.
  9. The business model is very different for grocery retailers vs traditional petrol retailers which allows for price flexibility. As for the stale argument, I could be wrong but fuel goes stale if left exposed to atmosphere i.e. it evaporates. If in a sealed air tight container it can last much longer in its current condition, so even if supermarkets are storing fuel for 6 months if its stored air tight it makes no difference to the fuel condition (I did a quick google to check and BP have a great page talking through how fuel degrades showing actual data). I think the problem is mainly a psychological one - Shell shouts PREMIUM and supermarkets shout OWN LABEL which we have been conditioned to via marketing. All fuel conforms to British Euro standards, tested thoroughly to ensure it does, the premium stuff adds more additives but it does not mean the own label stuff will kill the engine faster over time, just like own label food products in supermarkets don't kill people any faster than equivalent premium products in the same supermarket.
  10. Try forum cars, at least you can see more of the history/owner/modifications etc. How much was the car? Was it a bottom of the barrel price circa £4k?
  11. Until I see something comprehensive that shows either; in long term tests momentum is statistically more likely to damage engines and that momentum gives significantly worse performance results I am happy putting either in. If a lesser brand oil in tests showed it was statistically as good as a better brand oil at a lower price, yes I would buy the lesser brand oil, that makes complete sense. The point is not is one better than the other, its that there is no proof showing that the only difference being price (and the belief that more means better) and marketing.
  12. I prefer the walkers ones, but in terms of health benefits neither are going to make any noticeable difference to my life expectancy. The benefits I get are purely aesthetic i.e. the familiar taste. Both have the same fat content and carb content. If I was hungry and wanted something to eat both equally satisfy my requirements.
  13. Try Barry at the South Coast Workshop in Emsworth, usually does a good price and should be local.
  14. I think cars are more likely to fail due to other things - lack of oil, maintenance, stress caused by poor setup, tyres, etc. than having a slightly different additive mix in the fuel.
  15. Exactly this, my parents have lived in their house for nearly 30 years and Tesco is the closest petrol station. My dad has owned a number of cars, some for 5-10 years, always used it, his cars are fine (and being a mechanic of 50+ years experience would notice any fueling issues). There is no news/evidence out there showing that extensive use of supermarket fuels cause long term issues, if there were, Shell and BP would be using it extensively to dismiss supermarket competitors in their marketing.
  16. I would wager that stick some fuel into a car and get someone to drive it and guess which one it was from Shell, Momentum or BP and it would be literally guesswork it wouldn't be a case of definitively picking Shell correctly each time. All fuel comes from the same refineries, its the same base stuff, if the additives Tesco were putting in were so bad it would be on Watchdog by now. I recently drove my car across Europe, using all manner of different brands I had never heard of but always putting in 99 and never noticed any discernible difference to any of them or against Shell.

    Head Gasket?

Looks like head gasket to me, when buying a VX220 a few years back the Z20LET engines were prone to HG failure and that sort of gloop was a sign of it.
  18. Yes business models nowadays make 'get what you pay for' something of a yesterday thing. Think Aldi, cheap, but good quality - better quality per pence than other supermarkets, because their business model allows for it. The supermarkets sell more fuel than the branded petrol companies.
  19. There will be small differences...does it mean cars will detonate the second you out momentum in or suddenly gain 20bhp when you put Shell in? The differences are tiny really...amazing how much people hang on to Shell though because it's the most expensive. The pursuasion of brand and marketing in full swing!
  20. But the point is, has she broken our laws at the time she left the country. If she did, then she comes back and goes to prison. If she hasn't (and it isnt clear at the moment if she has) then she comes back and doesn't go to prison. The failings here are not on her, its on this government to not have the proper law in place to deal with these people. It was clear people were leaving the country to go to Syria, but if she has sat in a hut for 4 years and done nothing else, then what do you charge her with?
  21. I am somewhat split on this, but as others have mentioned we have to abide by the laws that we have created for ourselves. Retrospectively introducing a law for something because people hate an individual based on a TV interview and their actions is somewhat bizarre behaviour, but as the MPs that have split from Labour and Tory have said, Tories are now really right wing and are starting to behave with a mindset of such extreme groups rather than abiding by law. I am a bit on the fence with the whole 'child' thing. Of course technically she is in the eyes of the law but I don't agree that she is completely out of control of her own actions. The law here is daft, in that a child/juvenile is someone who is 17 years and 364 days old who is still deemed suggestible and growing up, but then two days later they are an adult that is fully responsible for all their actions - that in itself makes no sense at all. The real danger here is the source, Facebook, Google, YouTube etc. who have a blasé approach to content control - their platforms are being used to create these people yet they refuse to accept its their issue to deal with as it would cost their profit margins to control it. I guess my view is what if this was a 15 year old that killed someone here and fled abroad, would we not bring that person back and put them on trial? If she has done something illegal then in the same way now she is heading back its up to us to deal with our citizen in a court of law and punish/rehabilitate accordingly.
  22. So true! Been a lot of fun though!
  23. Would you spray paint onto a dirty car when spraying it? It has to be properly prepped for the job, every crevice cleaned then dried then descaled, any loose paint and rust removed, then any rust spots remaining treated before even thinking about putting the under seal on. I am sure someone might do it for £100 and just spray it on, but you live with the problems it will no doubt create further down the line.
  24. I wonder if the technician just said waxoyl as its such an industry word? Bit like sticking something down with 'sellotape' or buying a 'hoover' - brand names that are bywords for a product type.
