http://www.howstuffworks.com/engine.htm Maybe a basic starter for ten...I'm in the same boat as you Ricey, suddenly after years of not giving a hoot I want to know how to change stuff on engines and 'tinker' - it wont be long before I have a 'sunday classic' car

Oh don't, I have been on a project at work for a client that is developing door knobs (they are innovative ones!) but the client is non English, they don't understand the dual meaning of the word knob and it is littered across documents and presentations along with words such as 'smoothed' 'fat' and 'protruding' - I have never sniggered so much in my life.

Would have to agree its a learn as you go thing - my dad and brother are both mechanics and neither have been on a night course or the like, and neither had the internet when they were learning. My dad just got roped into it about 45 years ago by his older brother, he was ten years old at the time and earned pocket money sweeping up, but took notice of what was going on. By fourteen years old he could dismantel an engine and put it back together again. He got well into old Jaguars though, ended up specialising in them, listed Rod Stewart amongst others as his customers who had an XJ220. Wish I could put his companies stamp on my service book than some wally from a Nissan dealership He also has a range of Haynes manuals scattered around the place..swears by em!

Which pressure washer is this?
-
Any reviews on these pressure washers? Probably going to invest in the next week or so, only want something cheap around the £50 mark, which is also small and easy to put away, will something like this do? Im thinking more power isn't necessarily a good thing if I am using it on the car? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KARCHER-K2-19-PRESSURE-WASHER-RRP-69-99-/110714908152?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item19c71f6df8

Just thought I would drop a little guide on here, couldn't find one already - doesn't mean it doesn't exist just means I am rubbish at searching. Anyway, had the clutch changed on the car recently and found that it was suddenly quite tricky to find gears, especially 5th and 6th. What had happened was that when put back together the metal 'gear gate' that surrounds the stick was out of line with the stick. So the gate needed resetting. Took me 10 minutes to do this but is a major improvement, would suggest anyone who when they pull their stick fully to the right and push up or down do not find 5th and 6th cleanly have a go. 1] Remove shift knob (be careful to retain the brass coloured ring that sits inside it). 2] Remove the trim panel by using a screw driver/ideally trim tool around the edges popping it up on each side. 3] Once trim panel is loose in order to move it completely out of the way you must disconnect the ribbon connected to the air con unit in the panel. 4] Now with the trim and knob off take off the upper boot, it should slide straight off. 5] You will now see 4 bolts connecting the lower boot. take those out and set the lower boot and bolts together aside. 6] You will see 3 bolts connecting the shifter plate to the transmission. Loosen the bolts about halfway off, there is no need to take them completely off. 7] Move the shifter into the 6th gear position, make the notch sticking out of the shifter level with the shifter plate "guide" by slightly pushing down on the plate, move the shifter plate (the plate with the 3 bolts) accordingly to make sure the "guide" on the plate is touching the shifter. Once that is accomplished, at the same time tighten the bolt at the right rear on the plate (to keep it in place) - think I have made this sound more complicated than it is, when you try it will be very apparent how it all moves and lines up! 8] Now move the shifter into the 5th gear position and align the shifter notch with the plate like i explained in step seven. When it is aligned and touching then tighten the bolt at the top of the guide plate. 9] Tighten the left bolt now and replace all the removed parts The other gears should all line up now as well. Since doing this gear changing has become much smoother.

Totally agree railgun, I find it totally relaxing, gives some good head space and the results just make you smile soooo much. I love cleaning the Z.

I was at Rockingham recently, speaking with the instructors they all preferred the Porsche, said it easily took on and beat all the Lambos and Ferraris.

You MUST drive one of the TVRs

To the OP, leave a few printed copies of this thread accidentally around the street for him to find and read

I have a box of these in the car at all times, works a treat, just leave it on the offender for a few minutes then it just comes away without any marks. http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/Product.do?method=view&n=1698&g=0&p=175620&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=Base&utm_campaign=Motorsport

Morning all I have some of these wheels on the Z, but I am not overly gone on the centre caps. I found a couple of websites in the US that do some differing replacement caps but nothing in the UK, anyone know of anywhere I can buy some replacement ones? The current ones are the 7th in the list on this site http://www.upgrademotoring.com/wheels/volk_racing/center_caps.htm They just seem so obtrusive, would prefer something like the ones just above them.

Over you go to... http://www.350z-uk.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=22 If you want a simple answer, I would say get yourself a clay kit for occasional use. I have a couple of wash mits, five or six microfibre towels, Autoglym car shampoo, Poorboys Black Hole Glaze (got a black Z) and some Autoglym sealant (recommend something like this it keeps it shiny for ages). Have some various other bits like Megs Bug and Tar, Autoglym interior shampoo and some leather treatment oil (if you have the GT). I would also recommend some sealant for your alloys, I bought gtechniq C5 but there are cheaper options out. To clean the alloys just use shampoo and water using a mit, brake dust will just fall off if you have sealed them - no need to buy any expensive wheel cleaning fluids in my opinion. Follow the guides in the detailing part, you wont go far wrong.

A user on here, Rich - do a quick search he posts regularly. I got some Satin Black vinyl off him, sets off the interior a treat actually.

Good advice on the first year issue - most people have a bump or scrape of some description - stick her in something you dont mind seeing dented, scratched or bumped for a year which has lowest insurance then treat her to an upgrade a year later. I had my little VW Polo MkII 1.0 which was insured for £650 in my first year (aye Im old) second year I moved onto a 1.1 Fiesta which was four years newer and insurance dropped to £450 or something similar for a newer and faster car.

Woooaaaah sorry dude

I always have that fear though that they will suddenly wake up and make a dive for the inside lane without indicators

You would be surprised at the number of people who cannot afford £6k straight up on a car...given the average wage of the country is something like £27k, I would have to disagree with you on this one captain, that the majority do not have that sort of money in this day and age to spend on a car - petrolhead or not.
