  1. Good luck with the sale. I also considered a CLS but a suitably "cheap but good" XK8 came along in the meantime. I'm also waiting for 370Zs to come down in price. Be interested to hear what you think about the Merc once you have had a good go in it.
  2. With the XK8 I had to check the engine no. for post-Nikasil, then that it had the series 3 tensioners, updated chain guides, later water pump and that it hadn't succumbed to the usual corrosion points.
  3. Like others on here, I agree it really is vital that you update your insurers of any mods. Insurance contracts aren't like others and require full disclosure. My brokers just categorised based on the percentage uplift in power, so the exhaust, HFCs, plenum spacer followed by Uprev still put me in the lowest category of increase (less than x%). The increase in premium was very modest.
  4. Not XJR - but I went down the XK8 route. It's a very different kettle of fish to what I was used to but I am enjoying it. You just need to sit back, relax and waft along. What has surprised me a bit is that when you start to go quicker it's much more capable than you think it would be - i.e.. the steering weights up a lot and it corners much flatter than you expect it to. At low speeds the steering is a bit too light and a little vague - the compensation is the ride quality which is excellent. It's a tad old world but I managed to get a good colour, interior, wheel combination that does deal with some of that. You would have 100bhp more than me to play with as well A good independent specialist is very helpful to have (I would even say a must have but I don't believe in the word must - I always want to rebel against it ).
  5. There will be a lot of people who say it's not worth it - just drive to the conditions. For what it's worth I have bought a spare set of wheels and winter tyres on many of my RWD cars. I bought both wheels and tyres second hand in each case. Advantages - more confidence in cold conditions. Anything below 7 degrees particularly if wet as well, I prefer to have them. Downside is cost but tyre wear on each set reduced by approx half. When I sell the cars, I sell the winter wheels and tyres and have pretty much got my money back each time.
  6. ^^Seems the tall and short of it reading between the lines from comments from the powers that be. No one wants to question the decision, just a informative statement as to who is banned and why (in brief), thread locked end of. I also highly doubt banned members are given notice of an impending ban to "clear their desk" allowing them free reign to send abusive pm's, posts etc etc It's only a car forum.
  7. I for one am happy with a situation where some reasonable people are in charge and make decisions. A world where everyone has to debate everything ad nauseam is my worst nightmare.
  8. Having read the previous page, I think there is a danger of over-egging the risk to the rest of the world "they ought to know etc" That is starting to put the mods into a wider role of judge and jury. Maybe the offending member learns the lesson, moves on and has a fresh start. It's not like we are offering them employment contracts or investing our life savings with them. It's only a car forum and someone has to draw the line somewhere using common sense. If the mods start publishing reasons why people are banned there is every risk they then get into another time consuming argument over points of detail and interpretation. Not worth it, in my opinion. We should just trust that the mods are reasonable, sensible people and wouldn't ban people just for the sheer hell of it.
  9. Yes - Cissie and Ada would love all this.
  10. I don't see why we need to know - apart from being generally nosey and adding a tiny frisson of intrigue to our sad little lives
