Generally correct - you've got to pump the sprogs out to get the real money.
JSA is a gateway benefit though - so whilst you don't get money in your hand you do get council tax, housing benefit and potential other bits and pieces.
So average Joe might get;
- Housing at £500 every 4 weeks for a single person.
- Council tax at say £100 for single occupancy
- JSA at £250ish every 4 weeks.
So 11 grand for your average out of work Bob who needs a place to live.
Or £3250 (JSA x 13) if you live at home or have someone else to support you
Get yourself a gaggle of sprogs, smoke until your lungs bleed and you make your sprogs lungs bleed and you can have some ESA as well. Meanwhile you will now quality for a 3k Warmfront grant so you'll get cavity wall, loft insulation and a new boiler for nowt (if its bust). You may also be eligible for DLA or mobility allowance so you can get a car and on top of that (and this is the kicker) you can get your fat, lazy, no good, Stella drinking, Pall Mall smoking, 'I heart Candice' tattooed, pastie eating, sovreign wearing, other half to claim for carers allowance as he/she has to drag your behmothic behind out of bed each day.
