could be clutch release bearing. The clutch is a bit noisey without the clutch pressed down. Pretty normal but dont know how noisey your is. There shouldn't be any clunking during the process of the pedal being pressed. I dont get it anyway. pm ZMANALEX. He's good on this sort of stuff.

as Martin said, easier way is to take of the wheel and remove the inner wheel arch lining. You can just unclip it and get your hand behind if careful.
