You did not authorise this work. You only authorised the warranty work. Go in and see the service manager and ask them who gave the go ahead for the technicians to do anything other than the warranty work!

Saying recon engines are not worth it because the BBC says all breakers are rip-off artists is a bit of a sweeping statement. There are plenty of honest breakers who'll sell the original engine as it came out of the car, and many specialists (some of them on here) who'll do reconditioned parts for pretty reasonable prices. +1 - what hassle and aggro - if there's a warranty? Also its not just cost of parts but also the time taken to source and fit said parts - that reflects £2k worth quite easily IMO

Zug is just giving as he says a 'belt and braces' approach answer to the OP Each to their own - some people, even the experts struggle to identify which bearing is on its way out - you can do road tests and impose load on each side and still not get where the noise is coming from. If you can clearly identify which one it is - most folks would just do the one
