You do not have to use the insurer's preferred repairer. They can however require you to provide two quotes and will deny you a courtesy car if you choose your own garage - but I think its worth it to know that the quality of the work is going to be good.

If you've got that sort of budget -and you're happy with the guzzling - you could get a Disco or a Shogun with all the trimmings with relatively low mileage to ensure that when you sell it in the spring you have minimum losses.

Careful with Chips-away - remember they're a franchise - various standards of work - some good some bad. Depending on what colour you've gone for and how bad the scuffs and chips are may be best going to a body shop
