Didn't think to check the heater, It was about 70 degrees F here yesterday. The spurts /leaks came from a machined hole in the top of the chrome coolant cylinder which can be seen in the photos. I put the car in for a compression check at 8a.m. so i can't answer more I'm afraid. Turbo installer said to fill via rad with chrome tank open. which implies only 1 pipe connecting the 2? - at the bottom - and yes I understand the airlock issue. No leaks around Rad cap, just from the top of the replacement coolant filler, whcih is in exactly the same place as the original, but smaller, so as to allow space for the Air intake pipes to put one of the Air filters in the nose at the front.

It went in for a check first thing anyway. Too risky not to really. Bogs me off that its now a 4 day wait till they can fit me in !!! What I can't figure is if its not a Pump issue, and there'ss no loud noise as mentioned above, that leaves thermostat (aka sender?) or the Little hole which must be a pressure relief valve. 1 question which might at least help my understanding is - if hypothetically I'd lost all the coolant, which i had not and there was no coolant in the system, with a normal Oil temp level, what would you expect the Water temp indicator to show?
-
OK - topped up - Went for 15 miles - stopped halfway Water temp gauge at its usual just below horizontal mark Opened bonnet - coolant dribbling out. Headed for home. Water temp gauge starts fluctuating - heading a third of the way towards RED, then falls and fluctuates and ends the journey exactly level. Oil Temp throughout all this at its usual 85 degrees. Coolant now gushing out all over the drive So I started out thinking a dodgy relief valve later on this morning, but does this sound like a intermittently on the way out water pump could be at fault??

here's a close up of the replacement 'canister'. Nothing obviously there to say 'Hey this is me - the correct level' . BTW the boost is limited to produce 385bhp peak, so its not 400+ if thats what you meant by big power. (having to multi task today - cutting the lawn, so am dotting her there and everywhere...) Logic tells me that the top of the canister - which is bolted using the 2 bolts on the front of the engine bay drivers side. must surely be somewhere at the same sort of height as midway in 'height off ground' between the MIN and MAX levels of the stock coolant bottle, and I shouls therefore top it up to that level. Another thought - Water is not compressible, so If the coolant level was very low, and there was steam in there this morning, this could build up to higher pressures than normanl and force coolant out through what must be a pressure releief valve ?? - or do i talk billhooks ??
-
Well I just tried running for 5 minutes. Water temp came up to just below halfway quite quick but stayed there.... this is what it normally does Gonna let it cool again. Then check oil levels I've pinged the APS distributor, coz theres no obvious way I can see of checking Coolant level..
-
I don't have a bottle!! - its a (steel?) cylinder. I'm beginning to susepect it was there as part of the turbo conversion. No obvious place to check the coolant level !!
-
can't say I remember what is was like pre-turbo!!

This will betray my lack of technical knowledge. I went off to buy some screen washer this morning and popped the bonnet open after the 2.5 mile round trip. Noticed gurgling and Pink coolant spurting out of a little hole in the metal top plate which has a black cap marked 'coolant' Im going to let things cool b4 checking the Oil level. Anyone tell me why there is a hole at the top of the coolant system?

Ok - coupla more questions then. a) What about discs for road use. I liked the way the brows you had continued inside the engine bay, I presem they are fixed inside. Can you do Gunmetal or is it just Carbon Black?

Try DS Autos of Aylesbury, they are the European distributors. you can get there from the APS webpages

So what are the options then? for Brembo's. I don't spend the whole time in the car trying to see how high the boost gauge goes, but I have become aware that braking performance could be better. I'm standard at the moment, and trying to take my time over future mod's cheers. BTW. i'm sure I saw a neat set of eyebrows on your car in a thread the other day. where were they from

Dont worry about the EBC's Jim ..I have them fitted for 18 months now and done a Silverstone session as well..no probs at all.. very impressed with them..also less dust than the OEM items..I certainly would fit them again (in fact I have a set ready on the shelf to go in for next time ) +1 Dont worry, Redstuff ARE better than OEM. Greenstuff Aren't and there jus not suited to the Zed due to its power and weight. Redstuff are a good road/fast road pad especially considering the price. I had them on my Zed and currently use them on the rear of my current car. So - Are the redstuff's ok for Brembo Brakes?
-
so where di you get them then mate?

Hi I had the APS kit done at the UK distributor in May this year. I seem to remember 387 bhp, thats without Internals etc etc, but the graphs /piccies of the conversion are posted in the Forced induction forum. I did promise not to mention what I paid, but exchange rate movements probably havn't helped. Talk to David Stone of DS Autos in Aylesbury. If you want to have a look at a converted car, drop me a mail, I'm in Woking, just down the road from you. the APS kit includes a new ECU which the Power Enterprise kit doesnt (or didn't - when I chose) - and thats a pricey bit of kit!!

I wouldn;t say there is nothing extra low down, there is - but it just comes in after 2500 in droves !!

20"'s from MRR - not too big!!

Well, when i picked the car up, I hadn't driven it for about 10 days. I wasn't sure, but I thought the steering seemed a little heavier. First thing i noticed was how easy it was to stall it when cold. I guess all that extra oil esp when cold needs a lot more pushing around. The turbos only start kicking in at about 2300 rpm. There's absoluetely no perceptible lag, the result of 2 small turbo's rather than 1 big one. In first you don't really notice the difference until the turbo's kick in. I havn't really yet had the chance to see just how fast 0-60 is, just might see if i can wedge a vid cam somewhere and film it for you all. Second and higher gears are much more fun, all the power really kicks in above 3000 when the boost is up to .4 bar. So in 2 nd to 6th you can get the same sensation as at take-off in a jet as you up the gas The stock wheels don't perform too badly, it can feel a bit twitchy if you really put you foot down. especially in the wet. It was quite pleasurable after i picked the car up and coming back on a good stretch of dual a carriage way when i was tooling along in 6th 10 mph less than an autom ban when a beemer flashed me frrom behind. Foot down!! left him looking like he was in reverse :-) I don't like to think what its done to the value of the car, but I would say, if you can afford it do it!! "inhale the horizon..." it said in 1 write up that i read - absolutely spot on description
-
The boost is set limited at about .7 bar. I believe you can go and turn it up. but the balance between engine longevity and speed/acceleration feels right for me. To over over 400, i was quoted about £4500 to have the internals done.

I would guess that if the computer was reset at fill up it would be lower. I used to get 23 mpg out of my standards zeds..... I guess it depends on the type of daily drive you have. I used to get 19.8 regulalry. I just worked this MPG out from the amount of fuel i put in after driving a tankful. and i lost the computer in having the defi gauges put in.
-
well 21.9 mpg from the first tankful (97 RON) Total
-
As a recent APS TT convertee with a "safe" 385 bhp +10
-
First time I fill up - i'l let you know. Guess it won't be long!!
-
I see what u mean weird! Yeah, i'm looking forward to it too - first job tho is to establish how far a tank of super-unleaded will get me with just the occasional burst of acceleration.
-
Well... Its got a big APS logo stamped on it. checkout http://www.airpowersystems.com/350z/bov/blow.htm and batch 5 - engine bay and dyno http://s282.photobucket.com/albums/kk276/Martin_W_350z/350z%20batch%205/

i think we are on slightly different planets! care 2 explain?
