Steve Jobs, Apple founder, dies :(
Chesterfield replied to Adrian@TORQEN's topic in Off Topic Discussion
I love how back in Feb 2005 Alan Sugar said "by next Christmas the Ipod will be dead, finished, gone, kaput". How very wrong he was. Whether Jobs was the sole inventor of these Apple products, or just a great driving force behind such a wide reaching company, there is no denying that whether you love or hate apple products, without them the world would be very different. It's inspired people to make things better and differently than before. Companies competing with Apple strive to make their products accepted as being better than the "i-whatever", and whether they succeed in that or not, without Apple as the competition, progress on many things could have been much slower than it was/is. A sad day for his family and friends, and Im sure his legacy will live on in the company he founded. Not many people get to leave that much behind for the world, so he has certainly had an impact on this planet. Edited by me. -

Its the number of working days after you trade that the account is settled. A short example: I buy 100,000 shares at 1p on a "T20". That means Ive bought £1,000 worth of shares, and the trade will be settled 20 working days later. I now have a choice: 20 working days from now there needs to be £1,000 in my account to cover the cost of buying these shares. or on the 17th day, I set up a T3 to sell enough of the shares to cover the £1,000 purchase price. If the price on the 17th day is 1.1p, then in order to cover the £1,000 I will need to sell 90,910 shares on the T3, so on the 20th day, I will receive £1000 from the sale on the same day that I am billed £1,000 for the original purchase. Net result is that I have zero cash, but 9,090 shares - effectively for free. Or I could sell all 100,000 shares on a T3 on the 17th day and Id be left with £100 cash in the account. And I never actually physically parted with a penny. However, lets say the price is 0.9p when the 17th Day arrives. If you sell all 100,000 shares on a T3, that will generate £900 - leaving you £100 short on the 20th Day. So you will need to add £100 to your account asap to cover the total required to settle the original purchase. Now trading on T20's can be an effective way of making money/shares if you dont have the capital readily available to cover the entire purchase, but if it goes the wrong way then you need to be able to cover the difference between what you bought at and what you sold at. Its the closest thing to spreadbetting you can get without actually spredbetting, which is a sure fire way to lose a lot of money if you dont know what you are doing. If you are starting out, I wouldnt bother with T20's until you are familiar with how whomevers system you choose to trade with (tdw for example) works.

If you want to learn the ropes, only invest what you can afford to lose, that way if you make a mess of things, it wont cause you any undue stress or worries, just a bit of pride hurt. Watch how much the fees are to trade. If its a one off fee to trade (say £10), then dont go buying £100 worth of shares per trade, otherwise they need to rise 10% just to cover the cost of the trade. i.e. you will be 10% down as soon as you buy them if you do that. It may sound geeky, but use a spreadsheet to keep track of your own investments, cost per share (including the trading fee). I record any seperate purchases of the same share individually. Most sites (like tdw) have an online portfolio checker, but it wont break it down to as much detail as you may need (buy the same share at two different times and it will show you an average rather than individual purchases for example). Once you learn about T3, T5 T10 T20 etc, If you buy on anything other than a T3 then make sure you set as many reminders as you can to keep checking and ensure you either complete a T3 on the 17th day, or get the money in place to cove the T20. (or both if the price has fallen and you only hold the T20 stock). Do your own reserach on shares, and dont take anyones word as gospel that a share is good, even on this friendly board. People can reccomend shares to friends etc, but they wont take any responsibility of it goes t*ts up. So always feel confident about your own investments. Company websites, financial papers, news publications and even good old google are good ways to do research on any company you are thinking of investing in. Would you kick yourself more if you took some time to research and missed part of a good rise, or jumped in early without research and suffered part of a heavy loss?

That wouldnt be the guy that has just been outed as a fake would it http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/econ ... rader.html But yes, its possible to make money when markets are tumbling. Sell short is a simple way, but if the market picks up 4% in a day like it has done before, then you could lose your shirt on a swing like that. Also, buy at the bottom. Many of us got into RRL here when prices were 13-16p. I even topped up some at 24p! Ive been trading the ups and downs for a few weeks now to get my average down to around 16p now, but its trading at 10.5 today, so still down. Those people who buy today at 10.5, if they get back to 16p, they are almost 60% up. Ill be back to break even. I think it was Buffett that said something like "buy when there is blood on the streets". And he's not short of a few quid.

Chesterfield replied to Husky's topic in Off Topic Discussion
Im sure this is the case, but it may be worth stating in the rules, that the pictures entered need to have been taken by the entrant - Im guessing thats the case. i.e. no entering a stunning night pic of your car that you didnt take? Am I right? -
Is anyone else addicted to this forum?
Chesterfield replied to WINKJ's topic in Off Topic Discussion
Addicted. Nahh. I didn't take a smartphone with me when I went to Africa, and I have never been to Antarctica. So unfortunately I have only logged onto this forum from five of the seven continents on Earth. I am also the only member with a joined date of 2005. 31st of December to be precise. The day the forum was switched on almost 6 years ago. Ive met many many people, some of whom I am honoured to count among my best friends. Thanks to everyone here for making this the place that it is -
Im really not a fan of the back of it tbh. The front is a stunning step forward, but the back is just a bit bland for my liking, its not got enough difference from the california, which is not too far removed from the 599. I may be biassed, but I preffer the 430 rear

I would always advocate doing it at the counter at a dvla office. It is a lot more inconvenient, but at least they cant hide behind "we never received it". It always astounds me the amount of paperwork that is "not received" when communicating with the likes of the DVLA or other large companies.

Still here! Shame that the kids were not allowed on many stands. bet the retailers will still take their money for the game though. double standards. If it helps any, they would have been queueing 3 hours to play battlefield 3, and another 2 for modern warfare 3. Good to see you again

Just had a crash - advice needed for insurance
Chesterfield replied to phatbloke74's topic in Insurance
What they said ^^ Insurers have "approved" bodyshops and the quality of the repair will not feature highly on the list of things which they rank in order to decide on which bodyshops should be approved. Volume of repairs that can be undertaken (dont need to worry about having too many approved places then), Time to repair (dont need to pay for hire cars for as long) Price of repairs (obvious) Insurers want to take as much money as they can and spend as little in order to maximise profits. If its not your fault, then you should be able to take your car to wherever you like to get it repaird to your satisfaction. -
Spotted a blue 370z with chorley sticker in the back window on M1 today 8:30am. Looking good, but you may want to pay the dealer a visit as your indicators appear not to be working at all.

Thats not the V10 R8 GT though. Its the 4.2 V8 version. The V8 is 414bhp, the V10 GT is 552 bhp, and lighter. Im not surprised the GTR showed the V8 version of the R8 a clean pair of heels.
-
What about torque to weight? The R8 GT is higher in both power to weight and torque to weight. I wonder if it has anything to do with the launch control systems on these cars? That could make a big difference. The GTR with 4wd should clear the line quicker than the 458, but the R8? That should be clearing the line quicker than the GTR with its higher torque/weight and higher power to weight (only slightly higher on the former, but a good 20% higher on the latter).
-
As phenomenal as the GTR is on value for money - there are cars in that line up with MUCH higher power to weight, so something is not quite right about that imho. The 458 as an example has power to weight 25% higher than the GTR.
-
There's quite a lot serving the Chelsea area too That wouldnt surprise me. Im looking at getting a set of extra wheels so I can have winter tyres fitted on them, and there are loads of sets of wheels available on ebay for the right money. Most however are buyer collect, from Cheshire.
-
Sadly, blagging a 458 for a weekend from a dealers would be nothing short of the bread and fishes trick imho. Even if they know you arent just taking the pish.
-
Why would they do that? Aston and Jaguar are no longer part of the same group. They are competitors.
-
The new jlr cars are very nice looking indeed. my problem with the brand has never been its looks though, which rival anything else in production imho. JLR need to invest just as much into reliability and removing a swathe of dealerships that do not offer the service that should come with such a car. Hopefully they can shrug if the old man image in time too which will help with the silly depreciation that jags have. They will need to tweak their pricing imho too as the evoque for example has stupidly high prices for the size if the vehicle. Because of the depreciation on jlr vehicles you can have a nearly new vogue for the price of a new rr sport, a nearly new rr sport for the price of a new evoque, and so on. That c16 will have some competition from the Alfa 4C in the looks/power department, but its definitely in the right direction for Jaguar. And yes im still on the road trip

UK's longest under-land road tunnel
Chesterfield replied to Adrian@TORQEN's topic in Off Topic Discussion
This smacks of residents exaggerating the speeds because the cars are so loud. Its not the kind of place people will be going to drive like nutters, but will be going to hear the noise in a tunnel. A sports car doing 50 in a tunnel will sound like its going much faster. If the police didn't treat the motorists as a massive cash cow and targets generator, then motorists wouldnt have to treat places like this as some sort of mecca before they got shut down. -
You'll be going past us then. breakfast at 9, 22 miles up the road from you guys see you at fort William

And this premier inn is where?

Not particularly. Where's everyone meeting/setting off from on Friday?
